More or less comparable to the 83 since I'm all but certain Cambridge Audio uses the same Chinese OEM that Oppo does: BBK. Not a bad player for the money. Might want to sniff out some reviews and feedback just to make sure. Could be. I would have figured you drop that 80 to around $199 thereabouts and have the entry level locked down, float the 83 around $299 ish, drop the SE $100, and go with the 93 as is but obviously I guess they know their business better than I do. -

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player I didn't expect this. In regards to the 83 So the 80's gone and apparently the 83 is going to be gone and maybe even the 83 SE at this rate. I can't believe they're only going to sell the 93 and have no action at any other price points. -
Happy Birthday!

Will My PS3 Blu-ray Player and HDMI 1.3 Cables Do Full HD 1080p 3DTV?: BigPictureBigSound This more or less covers it. It's amazing how far the now 4 year old PS3 has evolved simply thanks to firmwares (and more efficient hardware in the Slims and such) but even at that, I have to figure they're going to hit the brick wall on hardware limitations at some point. Can't rule anything out obviously. http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/Can-My-120-Hz-HDTV-Be-Upgraded-to-a-3D-TV.shtml This article goes hand in glove with the first link. Worthwhile reads. -

Ah, good catch. I hadn't paid close attention to the stereo output detail. I guarantee you the 93 isn't going to touch your modded 83SE. -

A lot to ask at a $500 price point given everything else this player has, at least on paper. Wouldn't half surprise me to see it happen on the eventual 93 SE that would come out late next year. If my research is correct, I'm pretty sure Oppo uses the same Chinese OEM that Cambridge Audio uses. That being the case, I'm sure I don't need to connect the dots there for you, especially when I mention my former Cambridge 840c do I? If the 93 SE ends up being basically a streamlined rebadged Cambridge 840C at $899...whew, that's going to be a hell of a head turning value right there. I don't think that's out of the question at all, especially considering the 840c itself is several years old now, hard to believe. I'm a little surprised Oppo discontinued the 80, at least this soon. That thing's a piece of cake steal for an entry level player. They may have made a mistake there but they know their sales figures and business model better than I do. Best guess: 83 drops by at least $100 MSRP when the 93 hits the streets. More or less the same thing happens late in 2011 when the 93 SE streets to the 83 SE. We'll see. -
Amen to this. I mean it. I don't care about the tickets. I'd be happy to donate anyways. Nate, feel free to drop me a line anytime you want when you get a chance.
-
That's saying something. In any event, when I regain some funds in my pocket I may yet take advantage of Sweetwater's generous return policy and the fact that they're an hour away from me and take one of these for a test spin anyways. Why the hell not? I'd be lying if I said if this product line didn't still intrigue me despite my overstated/harsh/shrill looking concerns in my previous rant post a couple of spots back. Of course, if I do that there will be a thread with lots of pretty eye candy. It'll at least be useful for that if the analysis and impressions are lacking.

Aw damn it. Hell, I'd be happy to donate anyways. This hits close to home. Grandmother, father...

Certainly fair enough but I can see where you'd come away with that impression and it really is not one I want to present. I shouldn't have posted that like that without having this little personal issue of mine cleared up first. That looks a bit more "intense" than what I really had wanted to put up. I should have done better than that.

I'm sorry that's how it was perceived. I'm a little flared up about something else today that has nothing to do with any of this and this is certainly not the kind of intent I had nor the message I want to convey. My apologies.

A fellow Oppo 83 owner and a friend of mine wrote me this pretty good piece of devil's advocacy that cooled my jets a little bit: He makes good points. I couldn't give a rats ass about streaming or Netflix. I don't have 3D nor do I have any intentions of going 3D anytime soon, to say the least. I think I like the physical appearance of my 83 a little better as well. We'll see what happens but I think I'm pretty much with this guy. If I sell my 83 for a good price then maybe that's one thing but I don't...I don't think I'll really care. -
I really try to be careful before posting stuff like this on the Internet but here goes. The following is strictly my opinion after my personal experiences. Nothing else. Some folks' reaction to those shots were less than thrilled/doing cartwheels in the streets. Anyone here have any opinions? Personally there's a number of things that came together for me during my recon runs that made it to where I'm very glad I didn't buy this for myself. The four Zodiac owners I had nice contact with on boards and over PMs were quite candid and revealing. I kept running into "They liked it, but" type sentiments. Sorry, but at $2500 this is BS. Hell, for me personally, at a lot less than $2500 this is BS. Shouldn't have to go this large and expensive to get the job done. Sorry, that's BS, too. Perception my ass. Translation: They cut corners. I do not see the $1000 extra over my Wyred DAC-2 at all here. Not even close. $1500 for a stirling piece of kit and a very clear warranty for 3 years right out of the box is what I got vs. this thing. You can compare the innard shots of it right on 6 moons with these. For the record: A little over a week ago, I had my Sweetwater rep and FOUR owners of this piece that had to practically scour the Earth for me to tell me what the manufacterer's warranty was, which is a paltry one year. One of those four owners was press. That's ridiculous. I don't want to post FUD or talk crap but I think back to Aardvark Audio and when I can go to Wal Mart and fetch a $50 piece of Chinese crap off the shelf, at least even that has the warranty printed in the friggin' manual clear as day and it isn't a bunch of guess work and mystery. 4 owners and a Sweetwater rep didn't know until they had to scour the Earth for me. One owner was a member of the press so he probably reached out, which he shouldn't have had to do, and emailed me back in an hour after I asked him and the Sweetwater rep had to email someone at Antelope and it took him an hour to get back to me as well. I'm sorry, that just isn't right. You add it all up and my instincts told me to drop this thing and move on and frankly I'm glad I did. I know whatever happened at Aardvark wasn't Igor Levin's fault but really: This looks a bit hazy to me and I wouldn't be surprised at all if a year or two from now I hear about an Aardvark part 2 type situation. But that's just me talking. End Rant.

Oppo BDP-93 Networking Universal Blu-ray Player — Reviews and News from Audioholics There's a lot more to this article including pretty pictures so just click on the link. This is a no brainer for me. It's coming out around November of this year. I'll be preordering first chance I get. The 80 is discontinued. I'll be surprised if they discontinue the 83s vs logical price drops. That's the same video processor, probably slightly refined, that the now completely obsolete $2000 Pioneer 09FD has. I wouldn't be surprised if that's a new chip. ' There WILL be an SE variant to this new 93 well into 2011 sometime. I ordered an 83 direct from Oppo back in May of 09 in that first batch of preorders. I'll be selling it to upgrade to this. It's basically like new or close to it, I have all the literature, the box, the never opened calibration discs, cables, HDMI...seriously if anyone's interested drop me a PM.

There's some of those and then there's this: fit-PC2 <- That's unbelievable! I don't want to derail a Mac thread obviously but it's pretty clear to me at least there's a lot of options out there to do what I might want to do here at some point.
