  1. On a 2000s R&B/neo-soul kick lately. Very jealous. Polish jazz is great in general.
  2. Top marks from me, peep this if you're into atmospheric, somewhat freer jazz with a keen sense of space. A lot more euphonious and "pretty" than most free-form stuff.
  3. Thanks for the info. I don't think I was very clear in my original post: I'm aware of the 1200's potential and have listened to it extensively -- what I'm specifically wondering about is whether I should be worried about potentially buying a unit used for mixing/scratching. Someone told me to make absolutely sure it's been used purely for listening when buying a used SL-1200, sounds like paranoia to me but I thought I'd probe for some more opinions on the matter and haven't had much luck searching on the interwebz at large.
  4. Here's my Bianchi. Thinking about adding something carbon to the stable soon for variety. I haven't tried the Armadillos but I ride Gatorskins and have never had a flat with them despite riding on some pretty shitty roads. Veeery highly recommended.
  5. Really? I'm fucking awful. But in a weird and sometimes acceptable way, like glitchy Japanese electronic that sounds like dying harddrives.
  6. I figured I'd ask this question here as I'm having great difficulty finding relevant information on Google but I don't think it merits its own thread: Opinions on buying gear potentially previously used for DJing? Not familiar with DD tables but I'm in the market for a new deck and was thinking about possibly picking up a Technics as I'm looking for something overbuilt. I've heard bad things about decks that've been used for DJing from a handful of people; others have told me that due to Technics' build quality the motor isn't really at much risk of significant damage resulting in an audible reduction in sound quality. Any input on this subject is much appreciated.
  7. On that note, here's a video of Mtume ripping Crouch a new asshole over his brand of revisionism. It's amazing how the traditionalist camp manages to find logic in calling Miles a sellout for going electric while complaining about fusion/free music for not being danceable/capable of finding a widespread audience.
  8. To me, Tim Hecker is the king of modern ambient. His soundscapes are utterly beautiful and complex. I've never heard anything from him that isn't... transporting in some fashion. Hope those of you who haven't heard him yet dig it.
  9. Dexter Gordon - I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry. Great song title, great tune. Brilliant ambient artist. I really dig his collaboration with Lustmord.
  10. Ken Burns' "Jazz" TV miniseries is on Netflix in its entirety. It has its flaws, especially in its rushed and misguided portrayal of jazz after 1960, but if you can get over the obvious Crouch/Marsalis school bias there's a lot of interesting biographical information, beautiful music, and good photography on display. Good way to teach newbies about early jazz history and bring them closer to an understanding of why exactly the greats are revered..
  11. Tempting, but I'm strictly going for a standalone DAC. As far as amps go I'm pretty happy with my Millet MiniMAX right now and think my next upgrade is going to be some sort of SET. Thanks for the heads up regardless.
  12. I apologize for the somewhat vapid question but I'm just not very familiar with the current DAC market. Looks like it's been flooded with mid-fi faddy bullshit backed by adcopy regurgitating fanboys since I last tweaked my system and I'm not sure where to start in purchasing units for comparison. I wish I had the money to purchase something really nice but as it stands I'm too broke to invest real money in the laptop setup. Probably just going for a used Pico standalone DAC to avoid all of that nonsense, didn't realize the price went down.
  13. So aside from the creator being a shithead does anyone have any impressions of this rig? I'm throwing most of my source budget at a new turntable but my shite AlienDAC died a few months ago and I'm looking for another pre-built DIY USB type thing that won't encroach too heavily on the beer/bourbon budget.
