  6. I finally upgraded my Macintop (late 2011 15" MBP) to 10.11 El Capitan and it has been a bumpy ride. Currently I am no longer able to get digital audio out of my laptop. That's kind of a problem as my entire FLAC collection is sitting on a set of external hard drives that only my Mac can read. For about a dozen years I've used an Edirol UA-5 USB audio interface. It has a bunch of analogue I/O, which I have used in the past (mostly the mic inputs) and most significantly, it has optical and coaxial digital I/O. Both digital outputs are active at the same time, which enables me to feed two different DACs simultaneously (something greatly appreciated by a neurotic headphone nerd with too many DACs.) Edirol (Roland's "economy" line) has not existed in years, and they last released UA-5 drivers for OS ...10.6. Up until yesterday that was never an issue as I didn't use any of the features of the UA-5 that required drivers (hibit ADC/DAC etc.) The UA-5 showed up in my device list as a generic 2 channel USB ADC/DAC and that was the end of it. Not so since I upgraded to El Capitan. All of the above would be meaningless if the optical digital audio port on my laptop worked, but it doesn't. I haven't (attempted to) use it in years, but I vaguely recall it not doing so last time I tried. I did have a fun afternoon with 3 different DACs and several optical cables until I was satisfied that the damn thing was broken. So I'm now in the market for a box that has a USB gozinta and optical and/or coaxial digital gozouta. Either that or a new goddamn laptop. ...also f.lux is all fucked up and I have no idea why, but that is a comparatively trivial matter. I had a fricken radio show I need to prepare.
