  3. Tim "Love" Lee in his studio.
  4. That thing sure is fancy looking, but I actually have a fairly extensive setup. As anyone who has played online video games with me (Killing Floor, TF2), I'm prone to shouting at my teammates and I use an analogue compressor to keep my tirades from clipping the inputs on my USB ADC.

  6. ^ Very sad. Frankie Knuckles crossed many boundaries in his career. He got black and white gay men to dance with each other. He got straight people to dance in gay nightclubs (and the other way 'round.) He kept his flavor of dance music alive during the era when "disco" was always followed by "sucks." The term "house music" comes from the Warehouse, the club where Frankie held his residency.

  8. I haven't had much Slow Time recently. I've been too busy getting my car dented and breaking preamps Heresey!
  9. They are quite beefy switches, in keeping with the AR's tanklike construction. I surmise what happened is that the dual-XLR-to-RCA adapter and requisite four XLR connectors were enough mass to get ahold of the poor switch and yank it sideways. I'm not sure what was the boneheaded move by me that caused that part of the headphone cable to make contact with the switch, but such matters are academic at this point. I have to get the AR repaired. It's the center of my headphone/speaker rig. I have used it every day since I got in late 2008, and I'm gonna miss it while it's gone.
  10. I just discovered that the Mute switch on my treasured Audio Research LS-9 preamp got torn off by my headphone cables last night. It's a toggle with a momentary throw, and now the mute is randomly triggering every time I get anywhere near the preamp.
  11. Alternate verse to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, actually.
  12. It's raining in my kitchen and the plumber is upstairs, cursing. My sainted mother arrives from the Vineyard tomorrow.

  14. Thanks for the replies. I passed on the pertinent information to Brent (not the Mexican with the large head, another one). I told him that the best option for 16RPM media is a separate rig entirely, or finding someone else to do it. It's a shame 1200s are so expensive now. I remember when they were $400 for a clean, used pair when everyone was moving to CDJs. I have 3 myself (none for sale,KTHX), but the hoarder in me kind of wishes I'd grabbed a couple more....
  15. Last week's show is here: http://mixlr.com/illuminator/showreel/illuminators-mixlr-33/ First 10 or so minutes are distorted. Tonight's show will be happening from home at 10PM Eastern.
  16. A friend of mine who is a music producer and is not nor ever will be a DJ wants to build a phono rig for digitizing vinyl. His budget is $1000. He needs a phono pre with a line out (he's got the ACD covered), a turntable and needle. He's asked me, but my phono knowledge is too DJ-centric. Any HCers have some suggestions for those three components that fit within his budget constraints? Are there any turntables with built in pres in that range that are not utter crap? Also, he'd like to be able to play back 16 and 78RPM records but that requirement is is secondary to the above needs.
