  1. Interesting. Without giving too many details away...... is the variable gain in addition to a voltage divider on the input, or volume control solely from variable gain?

IIRC, many of these digital attenuator ICs do two things for volume control, a voltage divider on the input and switched gain resistors for the following opamp. You want an output voltage below that of the input, the opamp runs at unity gain and the voltage on the input is divided down. You want greater than the input voltage, it starts to increase the gain of the opamp. Now, I have absolutely no idea what IC Justin is using here, so it is definitely possible it could be working different, but this seems a likely configuration.

  2. I think you all should grow mustaches for CanJam--for those of you not mustachioed already. No beards, mind you, just mustaches.

I have probably about the same chance of pulling this off successfully as Vicki. Would one of those nifty glasses/nose/mustache disguises be sufficient?

  3. I remember being impressed with whatever headphone was in Tower Records' listening stations, if anyone knows what that one was. And it's probably cheap, since they bought literally hundreds of them. Anyone know what that one was? I need to get one or two (one for reference, one for modding)

Are you thinking of the MB Quart QP805? I have one on the way, but it was a blind purchase so I cant speak to the sound yet. T40v1 is the way I would go right now if I needed closed and circumaural, unless I could afford something like a SR-4070.

  4. Got a call from a Detective Holt, MoCo background investigation starts now. :)

Installed a scanner, did some research about museum style directional speakers for possible installation in the library gallery. Found that said speakers seem to start in the $1k range, each.

  5. Not strictly today, but eh, close enough. Normal day at work yesterday, got in at 10, scheduled to be on to 6, but had to leave early for a group meeting for the final philosophy debate at 5. Well, only 3 of the 5 of us were planning on making it, and one of those no showed. Neither myself or the other guy had anything at the moment, so we decided to call it until Monday. At that time, I got a call from a friend asking if I wanted to go to the O's game. Went, and watched the O's suck. Don't think they ever got past 2nd base. After that, we went to a club, had a bit too much to drink, and I ended up in some strange German woman's house for a few hours. Got a ride back to campus at about 4:30 (where I left my car), decided it would be a good idea to go for a couple mile run, then went back to my car and slept for a few hours, before finally heading home.

  6. I bid on that one. I've been bidding on almost every Stax auction lately but I'm cheap... :P If the drivers were replaced then they put in SR-202 drivers. Man I'd love to rummage through the discarded partsbin at Stax... :-\

I bid too, though thought about doing the BIN. Would have certainly bought them if I could get away with open headphones at work, but alas, I cant afford the leakage.

Google translate said replaced pads and vibration plate makers, but Fungi translated it for me directly as pads and drivers. I bet there is some great stuff that Stax has just thrown out.

  7. A SR-X Mk3 Pro with new pads isn't that uncomfortable but the damn headband is unpadded so some decent amount of hair helps... :D

The Basic models use a more simple driver and the old OFC cable while the Classic has the upgraded driver and the normal width PC-OCC cable with Signature using the Wide PC-OCC cable. The Lambda Spirit replaced the Lambda Pro and was the original Basic model. It was called Pro Classic here in the West and used a 1.5um diaphragm (don't know about the stators) but used the Gamma style arc to save costs.

Would I be correct in assuming the classics and signatures sound similar, but the basics sound a good bit different than either? I almost went for that Y20000 Lambda Nova basic last night, though I assumed it had SR202 drivers inside, as I am told the auction text stated that the drivers and pads were replaced in the past year.

  8. Yeah. Unfortunately the Ace Hardware stores around here only carry standard 4-40 machine screws in slotted head, which I refuse to buy. If I want to splurge, they do carry some hex head. Like you say, more than a small few, then Fastener Express or something else. Never used McMaster-Carr yet. Those taps someone showed from awhile back were interesting though...

Smart man. How is shipping from there? The two times I have used it, the costs were quite high, but I seem to remember my items being fairly oddly shaped. They certainly have some cool stuff.

  9. The stock Alpha Excellent isn't a bad headphone by any means but the SR-X Pro is just moar better. :D

Moar better sounding is good, but not if it is too uncomfortable to wear for an extended period of time. The Yammy HP-1 is the only supra that I have had good luck with in that regards.

Just wondering, can someone explain the differences between the Lambda Nova Sig, Classic, and basic, and same question for the numeric Lambdas (SR404-202). Also, what the heck is a Lambda Spirit?

  10. 180$ (1$=93Yen) plus the fees and shipping. That's too expensive for me to make a cost effective SR-X Mk3 Pro. :(

I actually wanted them as Alphas, in the stock frame. Might have played with damping, but no SR-X shells for me. I just hate supraural, especially if there is any good alternative. However, someone just passed me at Y21000, which was already pushing it a bit.

Listen ,but I,am not sure also .

What would anybody recoomend in a non-pro headphion ,I am very very new at the Stax headphone scene after shopping around a lot I thought I got a good deal on a Srm-1,but not a mk-2.

I think I can use pro headphones with it,but I am not 100% sure.

What would anybody recommend in a Non-pro(normal ?) Headphone. My budget is $200-300.

    Thanks,Very much

I like my normal bias Lambda about as much as anything. Better than my Pro bias, and similar to my SR404 (:basement:).
