Balanced isolation transformer

Featured Replies

I was going to build a balanced isolation transformer. But I had difficult to choose form either EI or toroid.

Regardless of price and size, which theoretically will be better (in performance)? I was planning to build around 2KVA.

Does anyone have experience?

all the equi=tech are torroids

torroids will have less magnetic flux leakage, but will have a turn on thump

probably easier to find the EI versions surplus on ebay for far less than you can have one made for.

EI flux is directional, so often easier to avoid. And they have lower bandwidth meaning they act as noise filters.

That is true, but lower bandwidth is a result of greater leakage inductance, which means more radiated interference.

It is not clear that there is a perfect choice - toroid or EI (or R-core) there are compromises with all of them in different areas.
