  1. anyone want to take a shot at repairing an imbalanced 007A? I've given up...after long periods of non-use, it'll sound perfectly fine for about half an hour before the left side starts to go soft. sigh...
  2. i've discussed my 007A imbalance with sam a few times since he was in the same boat. unlike sam, i was not able to send mine in for repair/exchange as i bought mine second-hand, pretty much brand new, but used nonetheless. when the imbalance first came up last august, i tried to put it in a bag w/dessicants for about a week. nothing changed. i hit the crap out of the left side to see if it would "fix" itself. nothing. i opened it up to see if the connections were all intact. no problems there. so, i stuffed them back into the ziplock w/the dessicants for the last few months. just took them out, fired up the KGST, and fuck me - they're fixed! WTF? i know spritzer and purk have told me that they often correct themselves (somehow)...but fuck, i'm pretty stoked right now, listening to these bad boys out of geoff's kick-ass construction. anyway, i hope it's not too good to be true and hopefully won't shit themselves again...but just an update. thanks those of you who have been following my whinings and not just telling me to fuck off. appreciate it. UPDATE: and...imbalance is back. at least i know shoving it in a bag for three months can fix it...haha. oh well...it was good while it lasted.
  3. You are beyond help. haha. yes, I probably am.
  4. It's super easy: HD 800. owned it. wasn't impressed. liked the th900 better. any idea how the hd800s sounds? I haven't been following it...
  5. yeah, have made sure to check the amp. it's a head In clouds built kgst and checks out fine. it's the 007A without a doubt.
  6. so birgir, the recoating will not work at all? i've had them for 7 months and nothing has changed...any chance they will fix themselves in the 8th month...or the 12th month? i'll give it a go with the whack attack as well...thanks.
  7. i have an imbalanced pair of 007A and someone suggested i recoat the diaphragm with Licron Crystal ESD. seeing that the headphones are useless to me as-is, i thought i'd give it a shot. has anyone done a re-coating and, if so, has it worked? thanks...
  8. also one of the reasons why it's so fucking hard to choose a good set of dynamic headphones these days. sure, you can try as many as you can afford and have time to audition, but it's so hard to parse through all the bullshit reviews and threads that honestly, it just leads to paralysis. one of the reasons i started the migration to electrostats in general and stax in particular is that the paucity of headphones/amps (and even so, there is quite a lot to choose from) makes it easier to choose earspeakers and an amp that will suit my needs pretty easily. i've been a member of head-fi since 2003...i miss the early days of that site...what's on there these days is hardly recognizable. i pretty much stay in the DIY section there...
  9. opened up the left earcup, looked fine, put everything back together and imbalance still there. some pics: i'm assuming if the connections were bad no sound would be coming out, right?
  10. thanks guys. i'll give it a go later this weekend...geoff also sent me some info about checking the wires that go into the driver as well, so i'll take a look. will report what i find...
  11. didn't exactly work, but when i fiddled around with the left ear cup, every now and again the sound would come on, leading me to believe there is some connection issue with the left cup. or, can messing with the cup/pad also affect the driver such that it will intermittently work? should i open her up? i got them used from a guy in japan...so not under warranty. wondering if stax japan will still agree to do repairs, and how much that might cost. hmmm...
  12. i have an 007A that had a channel imbalance where vocals would focus at around 1:00. i put them in a ziplock with dessicants for about 2 weeks and it didn't help. i just had them running continuously for the last 8 hours and i put them on and now there is no sound out of the L channel. fuck. any suggestions as to the best course of action? would stax japan repair these and if so, any idea how much that might cost? i can ask my cousin in japan to send them in on my behalf for repairs... or, am i just fucked?
  13. edit: damn, imbalance seems to still be there...using L/R channel tests. thought it was fixed but not...aargh!
  14. i just got a kgst that geoff built for me...and i now realize that my 007A has a slight channel imbalance. vocals are focused at around 1:00 instead of 12:00. i heard this imbalance w/the previously damaged 717 i had, but wasn't sure if it was the headphones or the amp. as i bought the 007A second-hand, what are my options to get these repaired? thanks...
