If you want something with a leaner sound than the Stello, I think the VDA-2 might be worth a try.
-
Audity from VJA?
And no, you're best off putting that extra $100 into better headphones. Chances are anything that price is going to make the sound worse unless you can find something like the EMU 0404 USB for that cheap, and even then you'd be best off getting some better headphones (that aren't picky like the HD650). The ESW9 sounds great out of a lot of stuff including lower end sources. Pretty popular but some don't like it (see the DC meet impressions thread).
The ESW9s sound fine without an amp. If later, you'd want to try them with one, they do improve, but an amp's not necessary.Isn't he using the headphone out from a laptop? Do you guys seriously believe that the headphones are the problem for him?

This is kind of a random question, but have any of you ever purchased a pair of Koss ESP-950 brand new? If you have, was there any kind of shrink wrap around the box or seal/sticker on the box?

That's what I've been doing and have found nothing besides some very bad soldering. I will fix it eventually but since it has been completely surplus to my needs I have just let it sit there. I'm going to use it in my computer rig for awhile to see if that will make me get off my ass and order a full set of new components for it.
I see. Once again, good luck with the repairs. I hope it gets fixed eventually.

Could very well be but Stax in their infinite wisdom had to make it black... There are still quite a few parts that haven't been replaced and I haven't gone to the next step of swapping parts between channels as I don't want to mess with the good one. Who needs stereo anyways... Still the amp works with a -180v offset in one channel.
I am obviously not an expert in fixing amps, but could board issues be detected using impedance tests with the amp turned off?
i would love to see that DBT'ed, though it would be an expensive test, i'm sure, as multiple identical amps would be required. You can send the same signal to both channels, and test the channels against each other using custom adapters. You'd be listening to mono though.
-
You sent in money too?
No. I was thinking about it, but I decided not to after I realized that the DA-500 is too big for what I was gonna use if for. That's when I posted the link to the listing in this thread.
-
It's a very sick amp. With most of the channel replaced it still won't behave and some of the parts are impossible to find.
I hope the board isn't fried somehow.

What a strange fucking thing to happen... Semi-obscure 14 year old equipement that hardly sells at a premium as the subject of a scam? Why fuck with people over $145More believable?
I must say that I trusted the seller largely because of this.
-
Lucky you... I've been too busy at work and fixing my backlog of headphones. Hell I still haven't found out what's wrong with the 007t...
Is it really that messed up?

Uh oh.

If anyone finds on online for a decent price anywhere, can you point me to it please?
I had it as a saved search on ebay for a while but havent gotten any hits yet
Here is one on audiogon:

I think this is how it works. For the KGSS:
Power supply: 350V to -350V
Voltage of each stator: 300V to -300V
Output voltage stator to stator: 300V - (-300V) = 600V to -300V - 300V = -600V
If the KGSS was "single ended," its output voltage swing would be 300V to -300V. Since it is push-pull, we get 600V to -600V stator to stator, which gives the 1200V P-P number.

But they're still living a lie!
Ignorance is bliss.

Are you saying that double-blind studies have shown that expectation bias is real, to a statistically significant degree?
Why, next you'll be saying that there may not be a causal correlation between sound quality and price in audio gear.
And where would that leave us?
The horror ...
No. This is more than that. According to this study, people that pay $xxxx for their cables really do enjoy their systems more because of the cable purchases. Even if the $xxxx cables are physically no different from regular cheap cables.
Basically, this is saying that the "if I think it sounds better, why not?" people are actually right in a way.

I just got the fried SRM-007t we talked about earlier in the thread and it is a sick amp indeed. R13 is burning up and I suspect the diode next to it to be going as well. Yama's has apparently made a brilliant repair attempt and fucked it up. They've also replaced the 2SC3381 bipolar on one side only with some two single units and I'd like to revert it back but the 2SC3381's aren't anywhere to be found, at least not locally. So the question its, does anybody have the schematic for the SRM-007t and know of a similar transistor for the two 2SC3381's?
Once again, I wish you the best of luck for the repairs.
For the 2SC3381, are you going to replace both sides so that it's symmetrical?

I sold a Stax amp to Birgir. He paid immediately and was very nice and easy to deal with. Highly recommended!

No, the HD650s definitely aren't neutral either, I just think they are more neutral than the Denons. The Denons have more midrange, but its too much. To me, its one phone that plays deep and clearly, vs another that plays fairly deep and very very punchy in the mids. I'd rather have the Senns. But ymmv.
I thought the common complaint against the Denons is that they don't have enough mids.
I see what you are saying though. The Denons do have a punchy sound that people may or may not like.
Driven with the right amps, I agree that the HD650 does offer better sound overall. Unfortunately, they are not as comfortable to me, and they leak way too much for office use.
I don't even bother with neutral as a word that means much anymore. There are things that are certainly over-colored, but other than that, I like what I like and that's good enough for me.
I think the Denons would probably make a good office rig. Good closed headphones, in general, are difficult to find and system match, at least in my experience, limited as it is.
I agree with everything you said here.
as for the D5000, I listened to it out of a Maxxed Headroom Desktop and just went apeshit over it. The next day out of Drew's Cary thing I wasn't as impressed. So it could've been the amp or it could've been me.
I am using OPA627s in my M^3, and I think the synergy is pretty decent. If I remember correctly, the Maxxed Headroom Desktop also uses OPA627s.

I don't think they are that colored. Not as colored as Audio Technicas, that's for sure.
I also don't think the HD650 is all that neutral (though I do like the way they sound).
-
You guys are so harsh.
The D2000 and D5000 are certainly not the best headphones ever made, but they sound pretty nice and balanced to me. Their combination of good sound, comfort, relative lack of leakage, and not-so-ridiculous looks is very hard to beat IMO. I think they are great headphones for office rigs.
My office rig:
Emu 0404 USB -> SFT M^3 -> D2000

For an end-all killer setup, I'm not sure the DA220 is good enough (I haven't ABed the DA220 against more expensive DACs, so don't trust what I say).
For something cheaper as a temporary solution, I would consider the CIAudio VDA-2 + VAC-1 combo. I has a different sound signature, but it's generally considered to be on a similar level of performance as the DA220. I have one, and I think it sounds pretty good.
IMHO, having a built-in DAC be the temporary solution is not a good idea. If you use a cheaper external DAC, at least you would be able to sell it when you upgrade.

Sound quality aside, this pair are in great condition, and I'm surprised such an old phone has lasted this long. I think the headband is smaller on the Lambda compared to the Lambda pro and SR-404 though, since I have a large-ish head and have maxed out the headband on it, whereas with the SR-404 and Pros there is still a fair bit of room to spare.
Really? I thought that the Lambda, Lambda Pro, and Lambda Sig all have the same headband. The 404 headband is a little different, and it didn't fit me. I was surprised to find that the Lambda Pro headband is a little wider, and actually works for my head.

Go for it.
Done.

The prices should drop if Justin can supply the new amps fast enough. It looks to be a surge of Stax interest now after the BH showing it's true colors in Florida so the there is the potential for more demand.
I hope that the prices for 717 and 727 don't go up too much.
I just put up a WTB ad on Head-Fi. Have I been here long enough to do the same here? \
Denon AH-D2000--big disappointment.

The DAC is possibly even more of a problem than the amp, but my point is that impressions of a headphone from an unknown laptop headphone out is not reliable at all. I've heard some truly horrible laptop headphone outs that bottleneck the performance of $5 headphones.
