  1. Thanks for the information guys. :D

I think the KGSS + SR-007 is a little on the analytical side, and that's why I'm a little worried. However, I've also found that predicting synergy is a lot more complicated for me than just cold vs. warm.

Normally, I wouldn't think that this is worth a try given what you guys said. I'll be able to pick up the D70 locally though, so the risk is much lower. :jacob:

  2. Has anyone heard the Esoteric D70?

I'm thinking of buying one used for ~$1500. It seems like a nice deal to me, but I've heard that it is on the cold/analytical side. I'm a little worried that it might sound too cold/analytical/sterile with my Headamp KGSS and SR-007.

Also, it seems that Esoteric isn't very well-liked here. What is the reason for this?

Any information on this unit would be greatly appreciated. ;D

  3. Ah ok, I need to be able to adjust the current which an amplifier would do well. I could just put a potentiometer between power supply and it.

I have a question for you, what type of power supplies would be best?

I'm not an expert here, but I really don't think that a regular pot would like the kind of current that would be going through it if you use it this way.

  4. Stello DP200 is actually a combo of DAC + separate balanced class A preamp, not just a DAC with a volume control like Lavry, so it's technically not a fair fight.

However, since Stello DP200 has analogue inputs, how about running the Lavry's output into Stello's preamp section and comparing?

That's a good point. This is really more of a DAC+preamp comparison than a DAC comparison. The F1 shouldn't be hard to drive though (I'm only guessing here based on the fact that it's SS with low output power).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Stello was auditioned with upsampling to 192kHz. The Lavry, shown in the first pic, is set to 44kHz. I assume a CD transport was used based on the entire post (as opposed to native 96/192khz material on a PC). Wouldn't a valid comparision have both units at say 44kHz or maybe 96kHz; the max of the Lavry?

    Dc

As long as it sounds good, who cares about the sampling rate? Are you saying that the 192kHz mode on the Stello should not be used in this comparison simply because the Lavry is not capable of it?

Ideally, both units would be using the settings that give the best sound. While the crystal mode is not necessarily the one that sounds best to humanflyz, at least it is recommended by the manufacturer.

  5. I have enough range to keep the amp at 3/4 max volume on low gain (no hiss on anything except possibly the SE530s) and still drive the phones to well above where anyone should listen for long periods (though not instant hearing damage levels).

I think this is what you should do. Just because you are using digital volume control doesn't mean that you have to turn the amp up to max volume.

  6. I somehow doubt that the mercury would pass the RoHS mandate... :o Not much of an issue since most of the crap sold in this hobby would never be UL or CE approved.

Hopefully nobody will try to reterminate my mercury cables.

How about nitrogen filled insulation around a nitrogen-treated copper core?

    (air)

Your nitrogen insulation has too much impurities in it.

  7. Solution: Make 2 long ducts, have the fans run far away.

(18dB) (as reported by someone who measured it from 10 feet away with the fan in the middle of an enclosure)

Actually, having the amp be 10 feet away might be a good solution. IIRC, a lot of stock headphone cables are around 10 feet long.

It would be a pain to change the volume though.
