  1. Got the DVD today (estimated delivery on January 6th, so Fedex showed up early this morning with it?! they must've fucking teleported it here or something). I'm kinda mad that Yuuka wasn't in the concert too, but it's not as if there's any shortage of good vocals between Kaori, Keiko, Wakana, Yuriko Kaida, Eri Ito, and Kajiura herself. :prettyprincess::prettyprincess::prettyprincess:

    She sings? ???

  2. Oppo DV-980H, which shouldn't have the same macroblocking error as the DV-981HD. :mikey2:

I also ordered Yuki Kajiura's just released first live DVD, and also preordered the Ali Project DVD that's to be released in January. I'm going to drive myself insane constantly checking the online tracking... the segments I've previewed on youtube make it look to be an amazing performance. :prettyprincess:

  3. hmm well I will think about that, I had not thought about it that way but I can see where you're coming from. Luckily I'm into SS so I can't care about tube harmonic distortion :)

As far as turning the phones from one to another it appears to work though.

Outside of some woodies, I guess most high end headphones should have very low levels of harmonic distortion anyway. :)

  4. May I ask why not?

Unlike some other posters, I was only talking about what convolution can do in theory.

EQ and phase changes are possible. Time delay is a kind of phase change, so it is possible. Combinations (sums) of these effects are possible, which include things like adding or canceling out echos/reverbs.

Harmonic distortion, which adds harmonic frequencies as a function of the fundamental frequency, is not possible. If the input to your convolver is a pure sine wave, the output can only be a pure sine wave with the same frequency.

  5. Hi everyone:

I'm thinking of getting a pair of these:

Stereo microphones, USB Microphones, Preamplifiers, Digital Recorders, Cables and more at Rock Bottom Prices from The Sound Professionals - Great deals on Microphone, Preamplifier, Digital Recorder, Cable and more!

and then using the convolver plugin for Foobar to turn a pair of headphones (say HD650s) into a pair of R10s (if I can get a measurement on a pair). I can sort of do the same thing already with my equalizer but a convolution based method would capture a lot more of the intricacies than my method would. I think it's likely that it could even capture the effects of the tubes in the line etc which would be interesting.

I think this would be a lot of fun but is anyone else interested?

You may be able to do EQ with phase adjustments using a convolver, but I don't think harmonic distortion can be simulated or canceled out with a convolver. With more complex processing, you may be able to handle harmonic distortion as well.

  6. My sister plays the piano and has perfect pitch. One of my uncles plays the violin and has perfect pitch.

I've never really received any musical training, so I have no idea whether I have it or not. Probably not though. :)

  7. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Din Tai Fung is excellent. Easily the best dumplings I've ever had. They are like little works of art. The restaurant is in a non-descript strip mall, so one would not go there unless they new what it was all about. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the LA area.

The dumplings are great, but my favorite dish from them is the steamed chicken soup (with or without noodles).

I've heard that the quality/taste vary from one Din Tai Fung to another.

I've been to both the main store in Taiwan and the LA branch. IMO the LA branch is not quite there yet, but it's not that far off. Certainly worth the waiting time to me. I haven't been to the main store for several years though, and I'm not sure how reliable my memory is.

The first time I visited the LA branch was around 2 years ago, and the second time was around 6 months ago. I think they improved significantly during those 18 months in between. I'm making another visit at the end of this month, and I'm hoping for further improvements. ;D

  8. i think the amp is actually killing tubes. the left 5998 tube that i complained of making that loud cracking noise just died. i went back to try the old sylvania tube that i thought had died, but it worked fine. turns out it was the bendix 6080 tube that was in the same socket that died. dont know what to do with this amp now. dont really want to try any more tubes in case there is a problem with the amp. any suggestions?

ps. the same plastic bag in the air from a car window sound was being made in the left channel. i dont know what could be wrong now. changed the tubes and the same exact sound was made with a different set of tubes.

    Ouch. :sadcat:

  9. SAA Equinox, back when I owned 650s. Seems like ages ago. I'll never buy an SAA cable again, down with SAA and their deceptive marketing. Can anyone honestly believe the singular "Equinox" cable is "specifically formulated" for the Grado RS1, Senn HD650, AKG K701, et al? That is just an outright lie and blatantly deceptive marketing like that really turned me off. I don't care how good it sounds, the Equinox cable is snake oil.

Aren't they the ones selling the "balanced" K702 cables? :palm:

  10. Ha well maybe we should just meet up at Neils sometime soon and figure this out?

I'm going up to Alex Peychev's this weekend so its no good for me.. picking up my Esoteric DV60 unmodded/untouched to resell to recoop my initial investment and Neil's HE60s.

I can only go to Neil's place this weekend or next Saturday.

  11. Ha.. just the thought of it having the PMD200 made me think about buying it. And i remembered separately that Neilvg had one of those that he used in his studio so I emailed him last night after posting and asked if he would be interested in selling it.

Well if you don't buy it I probably will as Neil is a good friend and local.

I'm still not sure about buying the D70. If you really want it, you can take my spot in the queue. :)

if you come by, maybe I'll hook up your headphone system to my NWO 3.0GO (its a modified esoteric), and you'll get to see how different (if at all perceptible to you) a real top flight system sounds in comparison to the D70

    Neil

    I didn't know that you are also a Head-Case member. :P

I'm sure that that the NWO sounds great, but I don't think my budget will ever get that big. :o
