  1. And how many hours? :)

Looks like an exercise in getting pissed off to me. Can you imagine getting 90% of the way through a 1M coil only to kink it and ruin it? Sure, it's the tits to look at but you can't tell me there's anything functional about that coil.
  2. you guys gotta tell me about the meridians... i know nothing about them and usually assume they are old and no longer good.. that's why i pass them up.

Well, the way I was looking at it was it's the same DAC as the 508.24 which is a pretty damn highly regarded source and what I also would have liked to play with was the balanced outputs >:D. I was also looking at the 563 18bit DAC that's listed on the Audiogon but it's priced a bit high for a stock example. Although the few reviews I found that mentioned it absolutely loved it. For ~$300 I'd probably take a flier on and may still put in an offer if it sits for a while longer. More and more it's looking like I'll be using the SB3 as a transport almost exclusively so unless I can find a player with a digital input a stand-alone DAC really is the way to go.
  3. The flash on my unit is absolutely horrible so.... I don't want to leave dents in the camera from dropping it. Another option I've been thinking of is putting something like 16v into the power suppy instead of the 3v it needs. I would like to know what I might expect results wise from doing that (ie. will the ac adapter still work, will fuse blow etc.).

    Biggie.

I used a 24V when I cooked mine and the adapter continues to work fine. I mean, in theory that should leave the camera disabled but aesthetically undamaged. I've never seen a fuse inside a digicam and I've had two or three apart.
  4. The amp trhat he is talking about isn't the M3 desktop amp, it is the mini cubed amp discussed here on Headwize:

Right, and for the record this amp doesn't exist really. It should be thought of as an incomplete design exercise at best. Ti has talked recently about revisiting the Mini? at some point in the future but as far as I know there are no definite plans for when he'll do this. Also, Tangent is working on a replacement for the PINT but again there is no timetable for its release so for now the DIY portable selection is pretty damn limited.
  5. I'm of the growing opinion that Cardas, like some other manufacturers, has cultivated a very nice high-end market for themselves and as any good business person would do prices their products as high as the market will bear. Every Cardas product that I've encountered has shown a high degree of fit and finish but I've been able to find connectors that offer 99% of that for 25-50% of the price. And acutally, on a few rare occasions I've found that their connectors don't play all that nice with other brands. Example, the Cardas GRQSS 1/4" stereo plug is incredibly finicky about what jack you try and insert it into. Some times it is as if it's just a hair too small and has a hard time maintaining a connection. I've never encountered this problem with say a Neutrik or Canare 1/4" plug that costs $4 instead of $14.

  6. I like the stealth introduction of their own line of cables! >:D

    More About HeadRoom Cabling

Our newly-available HeadRoom connector cables are hand-crafted in our Bozeman Montana plant by highly skilled technicians using only the very best materials available. No cheapo, noisy wiring here, babe! The Fat Pipe geometry is a four-conductor with braided shield cable featuring Golden Ratio, oxygen-free, pure copper Litz wire with pure teflon dialectrics just like the big boys. The connectors are terminated by hand using Cardas Ultra Pure Quadeutectic solder. The connectors are mechanically inert, isolated from electrical noise and completely resonance-free, producing a very quiet, musical and superbly accurate cable capable of beautiful sound reproduction.

I've had a chance to sample the cable and it's pretty darn sweet and it's the smallest diameter commercial cable I've seen. I think it caries 4x26ga conductors w/ at least one shield in a package smaller than mini starquad. It also has a very nice rubbery coating that isn't at all microphonic.

  7. Well, by a stroke of good fortune I happened to stop by my local HiFi store the Friday before New Years to talk to a salesman that I've known for the better part of 10 years. The place had previously told me that the had no 42's in stock and no access to any more but when my boy Gary fired up the computer there was one. It was at another store and still NIB. 10 days later it's mine and looking fantastic in the living room! So as GE said, "Hurray for Sony 3-LCD."

FYI - I guess Sony has disco'd this TV but at $999 it was a deal too good to pass up.

  8. 1. Yes it will benefit from a better PS, I'm not aware of a commercially produced alternative though.

    2. You might try shooting a friendly PM to MisterX and see if he'd build you a STEPS. Ask nicely and be willing to work with him on schedule and I'd guess he'd hook you up proper.

Quick question, what version PPA do you have? If it's V1 do you have chip or diamond buffers? Also, what opamps are in there now? I'll have a look at the 2107 and see if I see anything to discourage using them.

  9. As much as I like my K1000 setup, I can't lie down with them, so I started looking for "normal" headphones. <snip>

After reading all that the first thought that popped into my head is that you really should try the HD600s before abandoning dynamic cans. They are different enough from the HD650s that after owning both and selling the 600s I bought a pair of 580s and modded them (re-screened) to get back what I felt like I was missing not having the 600s around. Some times I feel like the 650s are better, some times it is the other way round.
  10. I would not be at all shocked if one of the headphone manufacturers launched a new headphone at the National Meet this year. I think most of them in attendance last year were a bit taken aback by the amount of $$ that even the low-end users like myself have tied up in a headphone rig.
