  1. Too true. At Quad they even did worse when the chinese holding got the company and started to produce the 2805. A friend of mine purchased a pair, needed a replacement two days later for one speaker going mute. The replacement sounded wrong, but luckily he had the first pair at home yet. He took both pairs apart and managed to build a right sounding pair. The inner construction is pure crap. Parts, soldering... the problem with the second pair was a wrong value cap :palm: And that into a 6K euros pair of speakers.

Looks like nobody is interested in doing things right these days, it's all for the profit.

  2. ....

I'm keeping the funds in the US and Europe while all of this blows over. I own a bakery so I can just make my own pasta if I need to... :P We've lived through far worse then this and come out on top so I'm not worried at all.

That's the spirit ;) Good luck mate, I hope you can overcome this situation quickly.

So you need to dismantle the Ω2 MkII to get those ports covered and to have a righter bass. Didn't they listen to the cans before leaving that piece with the holes open? :palm:

  3. You do need a better setup to get what either one is capable of. However, I would say the L3000 improves over the W11JPN in the areas you cited. I do think they would be redundant to own, or at least listen to (just keep the JPN in a display case), because the L3000 does what the JPN does well and more. Some might claim that because the L3000 is a better overall performer, the midrange is not as prominent as with the JPN (though I'd say it's every bit as good).

I don't know the W11JPN, never heard them, but I must agree about the L3000's midrange, it's excellent. It always surprised me that most people speaking about these cans, just tell about their bass, not their fluent and natural mids.

  4. Yup, but get one with the PSU. It really does make a difference.

As for me, curiosity got the best of me and I bought a pair of ATH-ESW10s that will be released on the 17th of this month. As you guys know, I'm a huge fan of the ESW9's sq for what they are (closed, portable, don't need no damn amp), and read that the 10s have different drivers. It's unlikely that I'll be able to hear them unless I buy them, so I figure I'll compare the two and sell the one I like least. I can't have an uber-cool set-up like Al's or Mike's at work, and these will work best for me.

Hmmm, let us know about those ESW10. For some time I was considering the ESW9 as a complement for the portable rig, but those comments about early units sounding different from the later production ones, and the perhaps excessive bass, kept me away from it. However some comfortable, easy to drive and decent sounding "big" cans -as opposed to IEMs- for a portable use keeps being an interesting idea to me.

  5. Many states have similar laws now but honestly they are a complete waste. The problem with peopling talking on their cell phones isn't holding up the phone it's that driving and talking at the same time is too difficult a task for many people.

Probably both hehehe. Here most cars are stick gear, so keeping a hand busy on the cell is some handicap for proper driving. Add to that the distraction of running a conversation...

Anyway, I'd need someone qualified to explain my why this need of being available 24/7 everywhere, and the need to tell someone every single crappy thought that crosses your mind.

  6. :palm: I had the idea that US authorities were quite severe enforcing the law, especially traffic laws, and the people more respectful to them. When I was there I found intriguing everybody was so respectful with the speed limits. We've needed a lot of radars installed, harder laws and personnel to enforce them to get people speeding below the limits or driving alcohol free.

If a traffic agent gets you driving without your license, you're in serious trouble here.

  7. In Spain, and I think other eurpean countries too, it's forbidden to drive while speaking on a cell-phone. You can do if you have installed a free-hands system, but if they catch you with the cell on your hands driving, you get a fine and you may lose some credits of your driving license.

If you have an accident and you're drunk, were using the cell-phone or other factors considered aggravating, you can go to jail.

You also cannot drive wearing headphones, and they're considering to forbid smoking while driving too.

For all the things you've been telling in this thread, I think you'd need a law forbidding the use of cell-phones while driving. Looks like most people overlooks how dangerous and concentration demanding is driving.

  8. Now we're talkin'! ;D

Funnily enough a modded Bidat may outperform the Lavry Gold (I have an acquaintance who owns several Bidats, the Lavry Gold, some Pacific Microsonics.. I think Moray knows this guy too) in some features. Of course YMMV and it's all about preferences, priorities and evaluation methods. The good part of the Lavry is that it's not discontinued and can be found more easily than any of the Museatex old DACs.

If I hadn't already a Museatex I'd be looking at Lavry's gear. I guess that even the modest DA10, which I still have to try, has probably some of the interesting goods of the higher end products.

  9. I've never owned a piece of Meridian gear myself, but a friend has the 588.24 at home. It developed some problem and he contacted the spanish distributor. They looked at it, said they had fixed it, but when the CDP got to his place, the problem was still there.

My friend contacted Meridian UK directly and explained the whole thing. They were responsive, asked him to send the player to UK, and they fixed it perfectly and quite quickly.

I've read at other sites that Meridian distributors are in the moronic and expensive side of things. I'd try to contact Meridian headquarters directly to have the G08 repaired.

  10. doG, I'm a dick.

Just wanted to mention here that I've been asked if we can bring our headphone measurement system to Can Jam '09 and have agreed. So there's a good chance that if you bring your cans there we can measure them for you.

Hehehe I didn't try to mean such thing ;) Living in Spain it's quite complicated to attend the CanJam in the States, but provided we were able to attend, it's a bit risky travelling there with a pair of PS-1 in the suitcase. I wouldn't like those cans hold at some security check  However I'm sure that someone else attending the meeting could take his PS-1 for measurement.

Maybe I can have my friend measuring them at some point before the meeting. Thanks a lot for your reply, it proves you're not a dick hehehe ;D

  11. I have only owned the SR-404...not even remotely close to the SR-007 MK1.

They'd better are ;) I imagine them as having the resolution, speed, frequency balance, pure tonality, and clarity I've heard from good planar speakers, with way better bottom end, but I still have to evaluate for myself their dynamic performance. Were they all that and had right dynamics, I still don't know if starting a whole electrostatics route would end up being more satisfying "musically" than some of my current setup configurations.

  12. Awesome. When are you joining the electrostat side of the moon.

Maybe next year. I haven't enjoyed very much my previous electrostatic experiences, but I'm quite sure the 303 and 404 I've tried aren't even close to what a O2 is capable. I still have some reservations about the dynamic abilities of planars, especially considering their low sensitivities, but I'm still open minded :)

  13. LOL, you'd need to read some Catscratch's post elsewhere recognizing how much of the source's character the O2 reveal. I knew you'd get to that point hehehe.

I really can't advice you a good DAC, at least one that I truly like, which I'd be happy listening to through very revealing phones and amps, and has a sensible price.
