February 14, 200719 yr Alright, I'm trying to install Linux (Ubuntu 6.06) on my admittedly ancient (by Borg standards) computer (Sony Vaio PCV-RX550/-7732). After the install (I let it wipe the disk [200G Seagate Barracuda]), Grub comes up and says "Error 18". So I think what's going on is that the Bios can't handle the large disk drive, but if I'm reading this page correctly, they want me to shrink my root partition down to 512M? That don't seem right -- the installer won't let me even shrink it down that small...
February 14, 200719 yr It's talking about your boot partition not your root partition. You should be able to make your boot partition smaller than 512. Also when you did the install, did you check the option from GRUB to install to the MBR?
February 14, 200719 yr Author So since there was no option to click, it wasn't installed. So I did a little googlin', and I found out how to do it from the live CD, and voila, I am now (e)speaking to you from my computer via linux. I'm a happy boy (happy boy!), I'm a happy boy (he's a happy boy), oh ain't it good when things are going you way, hey hey. Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba.
February 14, 200719 yr I installed Ubuntu this past weekend, it was remarkably easy compared to when I installed Redhat in gradeschool (12 years ago). However, I simply can't make the full conversion from Windows to Linux because I've got to have my WoW, and I don't want to mess with trying to get it to run in Linux. Enjoy though. Check out Amarok if you haven't already, its a pretty awesome music player.
February 14, 200719 yr Author I will check out Amarok.linux, bleh. OS X for the win Not on my machine.
February 15, 200719 yr Author Argh, I've lost my 1680x1050 resolution! How do I get it back with my PNY GeForce 6200?
February 15, 200719 yr Argh, I've lost my 1680x1050 resolution! How do I get it back with my PNY GeForce 6200? Try the latest nvidia driver
February 15, 200719 yr yeah you'll have to install the latest nvidia driver none of the linux distros come with correct drivers for ati or nvidia graphics cards since they wont release their drivers under the gpl.
February 15, 200719 yr Author Okay, so I start installing packages willy-nilly, and I get to this: Package: cpp-4.1 Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libc6 So I try to install libc6, and I get: Package: libc6 Status: Error: a later version is already installed WTF? I guess I'll try uninstalling libc6 and reinstalling it, but seriously...
February 15, 200719 yr Author Okay, never mind, fixed that (aptitude is the bestest!), but now it wants the source code for the kernel, so I got that package, too, but I can't seem to find it on my system...do I want the package, and if so, where would have aptitude put it; and if not, what do I want (ubuntu with gnome, presumably breezy)?
