Start with the symphonies. For budget sets, Tintner on Naxos or Jochum on EMI are great choices (I have both and prefer Jochum). Jochum also did another acclaimed cycle with DG but I've never heard it and it's more expensive. A lot of dedicated fans swear by Celibidache but his pacing is really slow, perhaps better suited for more mature Bruckner fans. For selected recordings, I believe Karajan had a few really excellent ones, but can't remember which. If you don't want an entire set, perhaps start with his 8th symphony, arguably the most famous one and my personal favourite.

The 4th would be another good one to start with. I haven't listened to Bruckner much in quite awhile, but seem to recall many of my LP versions were Haitink/Concertgebeau (sp?) as well as Karajan/BPO.

I saw Haitink with the Concertgebouw earlier this year performing Bruckner 8 - an absolutely amazing performance!

wand and celibidache were also great bruckner conductors. hvk excelled at him, though; i dislike his beethoven - besides 'eroica' - but he's my favorite bruckner.

Today I picked up the Tennstedt EMI 2 disc set of 4 and 8.

The shop also had a number of Teldec discs of Bruckner's symphonies. Anyone heard the Teldec discs?
