  1. Saw Neil Young at the Riverside in Milwaukee last night. He played solo on acoustic and electric guitar. The acoustic stuff was all great. I'm not sure I really liked the electric solo stuff. Cortez seemed lacking without Crazy Horse backing.
  2. I'm in. Just let me know the league website and when the draft is. I'm pretty much open to any night or weekend.
  3. I figured out the RIAA equilization in the Mixer Console. I didn't have to buy the DSP license. I decided to keep my Live! MC-10 Step-Up Transformer in between my Rega turntable and the ULN-2. This is a really great phono preamp with the added ability to make some nice 24/96 recordings of my albums very easily. I still can't tell the difference between the Modwright Transporter and the ULN-2 when used as a DAC. I'm listening primarily through the BHSE and 4070's while I evaluate this thing.
  4. If you still need another player I'm in, just let me know how much and when the draft is. Also how much do I win in the end?
  5. Well this thread and the recent Stereophile article on the Pure Vinyl software got me intrigued about replacing my Modwright Transporter with a ULN-2. I also wanted to use the ULN-2 as a phono pre. I started experimenting needle drops with an old Egosys Waveterminal USB ADC/DAC I had laying around and downloaded the Pure Vinyl software demo. The results were that while the sound wasn't as good as my Manley Steelhead I just sold, it was better than the modified Fisher 400 I was using as a phono pre. Based on this test I ordered a ULN-2 Expanded with 2d card on a 30 day trial and started using it yesterday. So far I can't really tell the difference between the Transporter and the ULN-2 playing 16/44 flac's. I can't test the phono pre capabilities until I get some more TRS to RCA adapters. I'm still unclear if I need the DSP license to do RIAA equalization so if anyone can help me with that I would appreciate it.
  6. I finally received my Quad ESL 63's from Wayne last week although they arrived damaged. The plastic bases on both speakers were cracked, one badly. The damage appears to be only cosmetic because they sound wonderful. I'm listening to these while we figure out how to arrange repairs and thoroughly enjoying the experience. Once I sell some other crap I'll be able to add a DAC to the Duet and complete my speaker system.
  7. Too late, I sent a check to Wayne for these this week. He stated via email that these look brand new and have gone through a total rebuild with new bases and fabric socks. They also come with a 2 year warranty. I've had 63's before so I know what I'm getting into. Always regretted selling them. I have a nice Graaf GM-20 OTL amp waiting to power these babies. Now I have to figure out a way to sneak these into my room without my wife noticing.
  8. I sold mine as well. They were too uncomfortable and didn't offer anything I didn't have with my other headphones.
  9. What is the current thinking on buying Stax products from US retailers or through Japan based retailers like Price Japan? I'm interested in buying a pair of 4070's and see them for around $1750 from Price Japan. Elusive Disc will get me a US pair for $1950. Is the $200 difference worth it for the US warranty? I bought my SR-007's from Audiocubes and haven't had a problem.
  10. Received my JH13 a while ago and decided to build a good portable system around them. I already had a Pico but found a Headroom Portable Desktop Amp used and once I compared the two decided to keep the Headroom amp. I had a Motion LS800 tablet laying around from my working days so decided to load it up with my music library in FLAC. I took a 2 week trip via car to Phoenix and back and used this setup as my music rig to unwind in the hotel(s). I think the JH13 is an awesome headphone. Combined with the Headroom amp I was extremely happy listening to my music while on the road. But it will not replace my home setup. I still prefer full sized headphones.
  11. I finally saved enough money from my paper route to afford a quad of used Mullard XF2's. They all tested 85% or more on my B&K tester. So far I'm not overwhelmed with these. In fact I'd rate them behind the Amperex XF4 I had. Currently I'm using the JJ KT77's and they're nice. I get the highs and lows that were missing with the XF2's and pretty much all of the mids. I'm wondering if the newer Gold Lion KT77's are that much better than the JJ.
  12. I also have a Revox B77 R2R that I picked up via ebay 5 years ago. I had come across around 30 unopened classical r2r tapes at a half-priced book store including some academy of st. martin in the fields recordings that I wanted to play. I sent the Revox to JM Technical Arts in Nashville and they cleaned it up to the point where it sounds very good. Nice way to listen to music on a lazy Sunday.
  13. I did the same thing. In my haste to listen to the BHSE I just put the stock Mullard tubes in anywhere. It wasn't until I tried tube rolling that I noticed the tube boxes were labeled by position. New owners take note....
  14. Are you taking the time to bias the tubes every time you change them? I've been spending the afternoon trying the Siemens\RFT El34, Groove Tube EL34M and Amperex\Mullard XF4 EL34. So far I'm leaning to the Amperex but The EL34M is really good for a newer tube. I'm using a pair of SR-007 Mk I for testing.
  15. I've actually maxxed out the volume control when listening to my turntable. My phono pre allows me to adjust gain so I bumped it up. I usually listen at max 1:00. When I'm drunk I tend to crank it though. I still have the stock Mullards in. This weekend I plan on trying a Quad of Amperex\Mullard XF4 and a 1989 Siemens\RFT. I bought some JJ KT-77 but will wait for others to experiment with that type of tube first.
  16. That's exactly what it is. I purchased this part after I accidently stepped on my CD3000 and broke the headband. It also includes the wire that runs between the earcups.
