  1. Reports at Head-Fi suggest around 200 hours or so, but I never know what to make of such things. Seems like that's sort of the magic number (more or less) most commonly suggested for pretty much any headphones. Best advice is to just let 'em burn in at slightly above normal listening levels and check in on them frequently. I've been thinking about picking up a pair myself, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Thinking about some Canon L glass as well, which would probably get more use.

  3. What? A Florida meet not organized by Mike? I'll bet it sucks! Ya, should be fun. I'll try to make it but don't know if I'll be able to manage it in terms of the timing.
  4. Interesting, indeed. But I suppose, eating it every day, with no hot butter... prepared prison style (probably just boiled), ya sure, that would get boring.
  5. Happy birthday, Jacob. Hope to see you in Chicago this summer.
  6. Don't ask me why, but I saw this T-shirt today and it reminded me of this thread: FUNNY T-SHIRT: PIE TASTES LIKE PUSSY
  7. I voted 2000-5000 but am on the lower side of that range. About 2400 CDs/SACDs, 300 albums and 300 DVD/BluRay. To this day, I have no idea what ever happened to the 1000+ albums that I collected in high school and college. They went into storage but never came out. I always thought my brother was behind it, but he swears he wasn't.
  8. Ya, lucky you, living in your "building" and not having to cut the grass. That's what I need to do today, with my JH13 and iPod rig. Thankfully, I have a rider so I don't have to actually exercise. That would really be torture!
  9. With the HD800, my experience so far has been akin to what it feels like to find that "perfect" girlfriend, at least initially. Yet, you instinctively know that she can't be that perfect, thus you're better off finding out what her hangups are sooner rather than later, which then softens the blow of the inevitable letdown. This is why I'm curious to learn more from those who aren't so taken by the HD800s in terms of what is missing and why. Sorry if in the midst of that I added my own interpretation to your post and got it all wrong. Anyway, neutral headphones are good in my book as well. Much easier to live with in the long run because they're not as likely to become distracting and get in the way of the music. That's the way I'd go if I were trying to narrow down to just one or two pairs of headphones as keepers.

Seems most people here, myself included, have the regular sized Kindle 2. It's lighter and more compact so it's easier to hold and to travel with. If you're on the move a lot and are using it primarily to read books (not magazines, newspapers or blogs), it's probably the best choice. The DX would have been my choice if I had been expecting to use the Kindle mostly at home, or if I thought I would make use of the larger screen or the ability to view .pdf files, read in landscape view, etc. The DX has a number of features that the Kindle 2 doesn't but I didn't feel that any of them would be or particular use to me except for the fact that the screen itself was larger - but that's offset by bulkiness, weight, and price. You should read the reviews on Amazon, both positive and negative, about each model. Not to bias your decision, but here's the "most helpful" rated negative review, which did influence my decision: Amazon.com: Susan Lynn Umpleby "S...'s review of Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device (9.7" Di... I figured I'd wait for them to work out some of the little issues they seem to be having with the DX and pick up the next version offered (hopefully with an SD slot). shellyh has a DX and seems to love it. Hopefully, she"ll chime in.
  11. Fair enough. They do love power, that's for sure. Same with the HE-5, I'm learning of late. I didn't mean to put meanings to your words. That's why I qualified it with "for me, anyway" and then later posed some questions at the end of my post. I was curious as to what your 'meh' meant in terms of what you did or didn't like about the HD800. I'm interested in how people are reacting to the HD800's now that they've been in circulation for enough time for longer lasting impressions to be formed. They were the one pair of headphones released during this past decade that I thought might possibly survive the FOTM syndrome (or maybe FOTY in this case). There's an expression in Cayman: "See me -- come live with me" that I've heard from time to time. It's usually spoken by mature, attractive women who know well what their limitations and weaknesses are, and don't want you to think they're as perfect as they may seem. Living with the HD800 might not be so easy either, but I'm a headphone polygamist so I probably don't notice its flaws as much as others may.
  12. Unnatural bed mates.
  13. Fair enough, if you don't feel you have an adequate basis to make a proper call on the HD800 vs HE90/HE60 issue, but it's never "impossible" to choose! Heck, I've even had to choose between shitting and grinning at times when listening to the HE90, and almost always keep grinning until I absolutely have to let loose. Edit: Sorry, I keep posting as I read. Bad habit. Don't have the power to merge my own posts like I do at the other place.
  14. Ken, have you listened to the HE90 or HE60 at any of the meets you've attended? If so, if only by vague memory, how did you think they did/would compare to the HD800?
  15. At times like this, you've got to stand up as a man and defend your rights to freedom of speech, listening, and thought.
  16. Well put.
  17. For you, Doug, any response is possible! If I could have listed 100 Senn headphones, I would have, just for you -- because I know you've tried nearly every one of them!
  18. Lots of headphones become "meh" after you've put them through their paces. Most often, for me anyway, it's the ones that don't call undue attention to themselves in any way. The HP-2, for example. About as neutral and neutral can be and great for studio monitoring, but where is the spunk I'm looking for? Same with the K701. At first, I thought it had all sorts of promise but now it leaves me feeling bland. HD600 for that matter. Maybe that's what is happening with the HD800. Too technical and not musical enough? Lacking in character, as in no coloration, nothing that grabs you on an emotional level and makes you want to listen for hours on end? The HE5's have this fail potential as well.
  19. Another fine thread starting with the versatile word "Fucking"; nicely paired in this case with the word snow. I agree. I hate snow except for light and crunchy Colorado snow in the thin mountain air with a warm afternoon sun beating down on me, fooling me for maybe an hour or two that it's not as cold as the thermometer suggests it is, while I'm busy checking out a trail that looked totally different in the summer. But otherwise, ya, I hate fucking snow.
  20. Again, no love for the 800? I find them to be leagues better, or at least leagues different, than the 650 or 600. In many ways (to my ears), they're not even recognizable as being produced by the same company.
  21. It seems that rationality has returned on the HD800 thing. When they first came out, everyone loved them and they were universally praised. Even the few folks who weren't convinced didn't seem to post any strong negative impressions. Maybe they were afraid to saying anything for fear of mob retaliation? The list now grows in the HD800 "don't get it" or "don't like it" camp: aerius, Duggeh, Dusty. This might be the same sort of thing that happened with the Qualia 010, except there it seemed apparent from day one that it would forever be a love or hate headphone, without much in between. I wonder if that will be the way the HD800 is perceived (on a wider scale) in years to come? Not that it really matters, I just find this sort of thing interesting.
  22. Actually, you and I agree on pretty much everything as far as headphones go and always have. As I mentioned, there are pros and cons in the HE90 versus HD800 comparison (for me) but I'm also a fan of the HE90 coloration and it is noticeably more moving than the HD800. My guess is that I'd also have a hard time deciding between the HD800 and HE60 if I had them side by side. I didn't like the HE60 as much as the HE90 but much preferred them over the O2 when I heard them all in the same room. I prefer the HD800 over the O2 as well (sorry Doug), although the O2's are excellent in many ways. It's funny how different people react. They're all top notch headphones in my mind but from any given "Top 10 headphones of all time" list that any one of us might put together, nearly everyone else who reads that list would almost want to puke at at least one such selection.
  23. I like thread titles that start with "Fucking..." both here and at other sites I frequent. This one has been a particularly interesting read. I've never really used my Mac as a source, although I have Matt and Jeff and a number of other DanJam vets to thank for loads of music now resident on my laptop. I should check out this Amarra business.
  24. Afraid it's going to get damaged and you'll have an expensive items on your hands that you can't find replacements parts for and nobody can repair?
  25. If only I were a moderator, I'd move your vote from "Don't piss off Vicki" to HE60.
