  1. Yep I have the Seasonic X750 on my computer, it's so awesome, but the 650 would be way overkill power wise for his purposes. Though it will be pretty much silent. S-Flex fans are pretty good, though they have a bit too high pitched of a tone for me. I prefer Gentle Typhoons but they also have a bit of a high pitch, though I would say less than the S-Flex. ZM-F3 is generally not good for a PSU fan since most PSU fans are oriented horizontally (blowing up or down) and as a sleeve bearing fan the ZM-F3 is at risk for earlier failure.
  2. Cool, I asked Maniac about it on email, this is what he replied: The toroidal transformer leaks very little magnetic field, and what it does leak is very easily controlled. Unlike an EI transformer, which leaks like a broken dam, toroidal transformer often causes less interference than even shielded EI transformer. As for the tiny wires in the photo, they are there to make sure both unit got the same music while burning in, listening test are done with that golden RCA cable.
  3. Cool, never heard of this before. Will check it out later, thanks.
  4. Agree with everyone else that said use slow running fans. The best fan for this purpose imo is the Zalman ZM-F3 (120mm), undervolted with a fan controller. It comes with undervolting wires that you can use but they don't go low enough for me. On a fan controller undervolted, I literally cannot hear them at all and they still push a good amount of air. I'm really sensitive about this and love the ZM-F3 for this. It also sounds reasonably great sound signature wise at full speed. I've tried lots of fans, Yate Loons, S-Flex, Panaflo, San Ace, Thermalright X-Silent, Gentle Typhoon... ZM-F3 is still my favorite price/performance wise as it gets dead silent, pushes a good amount of air when silent, and is relatively cheap at $7-10 a fan. Which form factor do you want? I don't know much about ITX but if it's ATX or Micro-ATX I can help ya out with picking out components. The best bang for your buck in that case would be to get an AMD AM2+ or AM3 board with onboard graphics, something like a Radeon 3300 (was powerful enough to play Warcraft 3 with decent settings). Then you could pick up a cheap used processor, like a 940BE (AM2+) or Athlon II 620 Propus (AM3). Cooler Master Hyper 212+ is a great budget heatsink, or you could get something fancier for cheap used. I would suggest possibly using the TIM paste that's included the 212+ (not sure what it is though) or getting some AS Ceramique, which is cheap. Another thing to be weary about is the PSU (power supply). Most PSUs have a fan in them, so that'll be noise right there. You could opt for a fanless one but they are more expensive, and you should buy a quality brand (Antec, Seasonic, Corsair, Enermax, probably more but I wouldn't get a Cooler Master PSU or Kingmax or whatever, there are a ton of crappy PSU brands out there). Corsair 400CX is a pretty great PSU that I've owned, should be plenty of power for your needs, the only thing is I don't recall how loud the fan was. Jonnyguru.com is a really good site for PSU reviews. For hard drives I highly recommend getting a Samsung Spinpoint F3. It's one of the most reliable (from what I've read on a few tech forums) and is in my experience, the quietest. Don't get a Hitachi, they're very cheap and fast but pretty loud. Also, what's your budget? edit: lol I somehow missed pages 2 and 3 of this. Looks like some of what I've said has already been said... but yeah I agree with them!
  5. The latest versions of Rockbox are really stable as far as music playing goes. FLAC and a ton of other formats are supported (including AAC which is not supported on the regular Clip+). Installation is a bit complicated, but not too hard. Basically follow the instructions on this page: SansaAMS < Main < Wiki ^ But grab the latest version of Rockbox for the Clip+ and use it instead of the normal Rockbox build. Daily builds are here: Rockbox SanDisk Sansa Clip+ Daily Builds I was able to do drag and drop with the original firmware with both USB settings (MTP and MSC IIRC). MSC makes the Clip+ look like a USB mass storage drive, MTP is a little bit more user friendly I guess? One thing to be careful of is if you drag and drop multiple files/folders consecutively, they will queue up in MTP mode and start after the last is finished, but in MSC mode they will try to transfer at the same time which is completely inefficient and takes infinity long to complete. So if you're in MSC mode just make sure to wait until the last transfer is finished before you drop in something else. Also, to lock the keys in Rockbox, hit the Home button + Center button simultaneously on the Now Playing screen. Same thing to unlock.
  6. That's 12" right? Hmm, I might be interested, that seems pretty small though.
  7. First pics of HA-006+ completely upgraded Dynalo HA-006++ SE Thoughts anyone? Looks purty to me, pretty excited to get it. It also has a 22 step attenuator for volume control instead of pot on the original.
  8. Small update, none of the outlets in the house gave me a clean feed, which is not surprising considering the old age of the house. I've decided against trying to change the gain myself since I have 0 soldering experience and don't want to risk bricking my amp. I've got the HA-006++ SE coming my way soon though, Maniac just posted pics of it on the other forum... I'll copy and paste his post exactly to here.
  9. Next generation iPhone unscrewed from Vietnam (update: video!) -- Engadget Fourth generation iPhone teardown reveals A4 microprocessor -- Engadget Pretty cool, iPhone with iPad CPU. Video does a direct size comparison with presumably the current iPhone and the new one looks considerably sleeker and nicer imo.
  10. For reference these were actually laser etched outlines then hand painted. (I asked Zac specifically about these). Imo handpainting is the way to go. I'm not a big fan of the faceplates with it seems images printed on them.
  11. Cool, I just talked to them (Seattle Hearing Aids - Audiology & Hearing Evaluation, Hearing Aid Fitting & Repair - Northgate Hearing Services Inc.) and they sound very experienced. $25/ear and if the impression needs to be redone it's free. The person on the phone said in the 10 years they've been doing IEM impressions they've only had to redo 3 times. I also like the fact that there is only two audiologists on staff there so I think whoever I get it'll be good. I'll report back on fit later after it's all done.
  12. After re-reading most of this thread I've decided to go with a new impression on my left ear. Even though with tape I can get it to seal it still just doesn't sound right with angling and imaging, and when I smile I can really feel it whereas the right just stays in very well and I don't feel it as much. Seems like people who went to audiologists with lots of experience with this are getting better results (no duh)... gonna head to a place that does a lot of IEM molds for a church band and hopefully that will turn out well.
  13. I think this is a great description of what makes the JH13 special, to me at least anyway. I finally got the seal right on the left side (6 layers of electrical tape ftw... oh don't think I mentioned this yet but I got my refit back and the left is too small now, which I've remedied with tape for the moment) and have been listening for I dunno 5 hours straight? Anyway I completely got what boomana said above, most noticeably when listening to The Cure's "Cut Here". I'm pretty happy that I have some headphones that make The Cure sound awesome again Source is Rockbox'd Clip+ (awesome also)... I have to say I think this setup is better than a Pico Dac -> Dynalo -> HF2 setup, which I think is pretty incredible.
  14. Awesome pics. This post prompted me to get that Dave Matthews album, weeeee.
  15. Trim a SIM Card Into a MicroSIM for iPads and Other Devices - microSIM - Lifehacker
  16. Ya I think that has to be it. That or a wizard... Btw, I did confirm with GPH that he has the Plus Edition as well. So presumably the exact same amp... just my power is dirtier than his. When I get my JH-13 back from refit I may or may not test different outlets around the house for noise... depending on if I get my upgraded Dynalo (HA-006++ SE) with unity gain by then. Maniac said on the other forum that they'd be shipping out on Thursday.
  17. With Fitz's help in chat (ty again Fitz), I set it to the 200m marking on the V= (bottom line is dotted) section.
  18. Alright I just did some measurements: L (tip) to ground (sleeve) = 0.46 and R (ring) to ground (sleeve) = 0.86 Which is apparently very good... This is really really strange! I guess the solution is to change the gain. Still don't know why GPH would have no hiss and I would. Actually, did you get the HA-006+ early in its release? I know Maniac changed one of the innards to, oddly enough, lower noise floor... which is indicated by a sticker on the back that says HA-006+ Plus Edition (this is what I have).
  19. Slate isn't confirmed dead reading that link... not yet at least. I'm guessing Slate running Windows 7 is dead though. Windows 7 is just not designed for use with a finger... I'm pretty surprised actually they didn't think of that before. Android on Slate could be good though.
  20. I talked to Maniac about the problem and he asked me if my gain was at 11x, the default, which it is. He made it out to seem like it was a problem with the gain and that changing the unit to unity or 3x would fix it. Are you at 11x too?
  21. Okay cool! I'm headed to the hardware store now to pick up a digital multimeter. I'm a total noob at electronics besides buying and using them. Is this what you meant by blank 1/4" phone plug, Neutrik 1/4 in Phone Plug, Solder Internal Strain Relief Metal | EP-6 (EP6) | Neutrik ? I have a 1/4" male to 1/8" female adapter from RadioShack that is seemingly all metal, would I be fine using that? If not, hopefully the hardware store has the 1/4" plugs. Thanks for the help so far, really appreciate it. Oh yeah, I unplugged amp from source with volume all the way down and I still heard the hiss. So it's definitely the amp.
  22. This actually hasn't been released released yet. I have one on pre-order right now, should be shipping soon - Maniac said he just got all the parts in.
  23. How do I do this? I have the back of the amp set on 110V and am using the amp in the US... is this what you're talking about? The hiss is really bothersome. I have to turn the music up a good amount to mask it, and even then I feel like it is negatively affecting SQ. I'm pretty much sure it is the amp as well. I plugged directly into Pico DAC line out and no hiss at all, and also listened straight from my Sansa Clip+ and no hiss either.
  24. Hey GPH and anyone else using HA-006+ with JH-13, Even with the volume knob at 0 I am getting a definite hiss in the right ear with my JH-13. It becomes noticeable on the left side too when I move the knob above 9 o'clock, but is a good deal less than the right. Are you guys experiencing the same?
  25. K, took the pic! It's clear with JHAUDIO logo etched only
