I decided that I am only going to rent (Netflix stocks HD-DVDs) so if this format looses in the long run, I will not have invested in a personal library, just the cost of the player. In the mean time there are over 150 titles out, so the pickin's are improving.

Got it from www.valueelectronics.com for $450, this included 2 free HD-DVDs, and Toshiba is offering another 3 free HD-DVDs on a seperate offer...

It does upsample DVD (480i) to 720p, 1080i or 1080p, but the upsampled material will never look as good as a real HD source. I would say it gets you about half way between 480i and 1080i in terms of image resolution, which isn't bad really.

Well, that may be true for VHS sources and crappy standard def sources.... For high def sources 720p, 1080I/P something along the lines of 6-7" diagonal screen size, per foot of viewing distance is more rational.

I sit 9' away from my 52" Toshiba and it is just fine. Actually my next set will be 56-60" since I will be watching a lot more hi-def

I would get the Sony. I also heard a rumor the LED Samsung is having problems.

Folks, Does anyone have suggestions for the best sounding speakers I could get up to about $1500 new or slightly used? Currently have Boston Acoustics VR2 Looking for a definite step up in SQ, neutral and transparent, but not overly bright. Thanks Pete

Besides the power supply, there are only like 4 circuit boards in the whole player. How hard could it be Incompetent repair shop....for sure. Hoping this is the end of your saga :'(
