The Headcase Stax thread
009S and a new DAC got announced (SRM-D10). Can't wait to give it a listen next time I'm in Japan. They are both expected to be for sale in the middle of June. 460,000 yen for the 009S and 90,000 yen for the DAC. https://stax.co.jp/2018/04/24/009s_d10/ https://stax.co.jp/products/sr-009s/ https://stax.co.jp/products/srm-d10/

Hey Head-Case, what's your bandwidth like?
Fiber here in Sakai Japan. My upload is actually the same speed as my download but did not show up in this test. I love Japanese internet.

I loved my SRX MkIII Pro when I had it. I just wished it was more comfortable as it killed my ears and head wearing it. I preferred it to even a 507.

Modern Equivalent or better to a Stax DAC-Talent
Hey everyone I have been feeling an itch to to get a DAC capable of 24bit/96Khz or better. I currently have and love my Stax DAC talent. About what level of current DAC would exceed the quality of my current DAC? Do $500 DACs now exceed the quality of classic DACs? Or would I need to spend over $1000 or more to notice a difference? For those that don't know the DAC has a Burr Brown PCM63P which can do 20bit/48Khz. Some specs are Digital Filter: 20bit Oversampling: 8x Bit conversion: 20/16 Total harmonic distortion: 0.0015% (1kHz, 0dB) 0.015% (1kHz,-20dB); 1.5% (1kHz,-60dB) Frequency response: DC ... 20kHz (± 0.5dB) S / N ratio: 118dB Dynamic Range: 104dB Channel Separation: 120dB

Does anyone know if any other company's ear-pads would fit on a Stax Gamma? Unfortunately Stax doesn't carry any ear-pads for them anymore.

Time for some Stax SR-Sigma love......
Thanks for the impressions. I was looking forward to hearing what you thought. If you like the midrange of the Sigma you should try a Gamma, or SRXMk3. I prefer their midrange to any Lambdas.

Stax SRD 6/7 - opinions?
In regards to Omega 2 and the Sigma I prefer the SRD7 Pro Mk2 to any Stax made amp that isn't a 717/727. For Lambdas or SRX though I prefer a Stax amp over the SRD7.

I preferred the srm-600 by a little bit but that may have just been psychological. Both earspeakers sounded great through all 3 amps.

Here are my impressions of the 307, 407, and 507 If you want the short version I bought the 507. Long version Take my impressions with a grain of salt as it was in a not totally quiet place. I went to my favorite Stax dealer here in Japan. I listened through a srm-600 and a srm-006TS, as well as a little on a 323s. I hated the 307 immediately, it sounded like a 404 and 303. In other words etch. The 407 and 507 were very close. Both sounded great with no etch at all. I felt there was more bass from the 507 also it felt a bit more detailed in transient notes. I would say if you are tight on money don't feel bad about the 407. It really is the best bang for the buck lambda and the sound quality is very similar to the 507. I have a small head ( I usually wore the old head band assembly as small as it would go) and the 507 feels great. My setting is 2 clicks above the smallest setting on the 507. Compared to the SC1 and LNS the 507 beats them both. Well time to get back to my 507s...

I will finally get off my butt and go audition all the new Stax tomorrow. I will let everyone know my comparisons of them. Will probably end up buying a 407 or 507.

Stax DAC Talent
For those interested I picked it up and decided to keep it. It sounds more detailed than my Littledot DAC. One interesting point is how I preferred the SRXMk2 from the Littledot and my Nova signature through the DAC talent.

Even here in Japan they are about $65 before shipping, so I would guess around $75 shipped would be fair.

Is this a fair assesment?
Get your friend some jecklin floats and try typing fi.org instead of case.org after head- will solve all your problems.

Stax DAC Talent
I can find very little about the Stax DAC Talent online. Has anyone here heard it and could give some impressions? I found someone selling it for about $300 U.S. dollars. Is this a reasonable price? After hearing all the great comments about vintage DACs I am interested in getting one. I listen through my Luxman amp to way too many Stax. I'm looking forward to your comments.
