Thanks, Kerry. Indeed, I knew from the schematic that the two supplies are literally separate circuits, and I only had the +/-15 hooked up to the transformer. I was actually afraid that I somehow destroyed the board by powering it separately, so I'm glad that wasn't my issue I look forward to the learning process!
-
The transformer seems to be working just fine. Thankfully i have 2 more PSU boards to try out. Should be a fun evening of desoldering...
-
I wouldn't rule that out, as I spent roughly 30 hours of error testing on one of my B22 boards just to find out the board itself had a short... but I'm having a hard time getting over the fact that both the HV and LV supplies don't seem to be working :/ I guess what bothers me the most is that newbs who solder the transformer directly to the inlet with giant globs of cold joints and no heatshrink have working units on their first go
-
the 450v windings are putting out 506v unloaded, seems a tidge high, but nothing too bad. the 30v (CT) winding is putting out 34vac unloaded, again doesn't seem out of the ordinary
-
no shorts between windings

Fun... I'm getting +/- 10.5v from my main output on the +/-500v rails. I am getting 506v AC from the transformer. Looks like I have an all-afternoon meeting with my multimeter
-
they were 25v rated caps :/
-
So one of my 4700uF caps on the +/-15v PSU just exploded (I think C11, whichever is closer physically to the regulators on the board), and U3 (the 7815) got extraordinarily hot. Before the cap explosion, I was reading 14v across the output (instead of the expected 30v), which steadily decreased until the pop. Before I simply replace the cap (which was oriented properly), any suggestions on what may have caused this? Anything else potentially die?

I'm not entirely sure what that switching pc power supply is even doing in there - he can't be using it to power the fans, can he? that is beyond foolish

"Something simple everybody can do" is a great idea... but does it have to be cheap or tube-based? This would be a great time to use pa89's
-
I LOVE it! Bet it would go completely over the A10-lovers' heads though...
-
I suppose because theyre prettier, and that several companies have made it seem like the Vishay/Dale name automatically makes things better. "So what if theyre only rated for a 500v maximum? Theyre cool!!!"

Screw wooden knobs - it's all about stone!

thats the same guy!? hope he at least figures out how to wire a transformer before it arrives...

Holy Crap! The New Stax Omega Looks fierce! (Stax SR-009)

never had a kgss - was in the middle of a kgsshv build, but the hurricane has put that on hold. I had a WES which I sold. currently, all of my headphone budget is tied up with Justin. I should be hearing these cans with some of the local fellas this weekend, on their equipment I must give yet another shout-out to Andy for getting me these cans! -

My SR-009 arrived today! Now if only I had a functioning 'stat amp... -

hooray! I'm extra excited to hear that most people seem to be having brightness issues only at very high volume - I rarely exceed 80db when listening -
thanks a bundle!

To be honest, I prefer the hype that eventually fizzles into disappointment - it helps maintain the illusion that something is actually happening with these cans -

great to hear that the 8/23 date was not just another mirage - here's hoping they get our whole set in! -

precisely! I have read that the resonant frequency of peoples' ears can very between 3 and 4k. Thus, given the size of the peak, this could be a very polarizing headphone indeed. For some this will be impossibly bright (those with smaller ear canals, and thus higher than normal resonant frequencies in their ears), but for the bulk of us this should not be an issue -

Thanks a bundle for the info, Gu Sensei! thank you too, Deepak, for re-hosting the pictures - that's much easier than clicking on each link I too am a bit concerned with regard to that 4k peak, though I'm not shitting my pants over it. Given the similarity of the rest of the peaks in that region to the 007, this may be the perfect little boost to wake the headphones up a bit! 4k is really not THAT high, and is still within the fundamental range of the piano (though just barely). I don't typically have a problem with brightness until the 6k mark, which for some reason causes me to feel a great deal of pressure and pain in my ears (this happens with the HE90s for me). given the 009 has a slight recession around 6k, these may very well be the perfect headphones for me -
that looks so lovely!!! really really classy

Any reason the original stax inlet is superior, less the bragging rights?
