  2. Kevin, as a photographer, I humbly suggest you either open up the aperture (two full stops would be good) or crank up the ISO. That latter option is probably better, as the Nikon D3 is the best high ISO performer in the DSLR market, except for the new D3S (which is largely vaporware at this point.) I also think I see a box for a monopod in the background there. [/photo nerd]
  3. The message you have entered is too short. Oww! Goddammit, cat!
  4. I do have collision, with a <mumble> deductible. The insurance agent promises me I will receive a check Real Soon Now. That will cover part of the body work and none of the mechanical repairs, obviously.
  5. The message you have entered is too short. The fake ones defy gravity.
  6. I hit a deer Christmas day, necessitating ~$2500 in body work. Apart from that the car has an oil leak around the head gasket, and a coolant leak around the thermostat. It also needs new front brake pads, and a bunch of other niggling things like a wonky fey fob (or receiver) looked at, a new rear wiper, clips to hold keep the liner to the sodding back hatch from falling down and hitting me in the face every time I open it etc etc. The service rep asked me if I wanted to do all this work, or consider trading it in for a new or "pre pwned" car. The truth is I'd get squat for trade in with the car in its current state, and mechanically it is otherwise sound. I'm really not looking to add a car payment to my monthly expenses, especially as I have more house renovation coming up. The woodshed needs a new roof: That tarp isn't going to last forever.

  8. Found out that the repairs to my Subaru are going to be between $3-6000.
  9. Studies show that the message you have entered is too short.
  10. Condescension was really not what I was trying to get across in my overly-thorough explanation. The entire subject by nature is filled with obscure minutiae, and I started on the ground floor. Now please put away that laser sword. Now Playing: The Postal Service - Give Up (2003)
  11. The message you have entered is too short. The left boob is Union.
  12. The message you have entered high quantities of [Freddy] Mercury.
  13. Not damning in the slightest. The innumerable qualifiers are a result of the hypercompartmentalization of electronic music in to endless subgenres and time periods. Allow me to expand a bit: Left coast means California, durr. Breaks in this case means "funky breakbeats," a style of dance music popular in CA to this day. Most of it is bloody awful. There are notable exceptions, like YAP. The first half of the 1990s was the golden era of electronic dance music, period. The California scene was particularly fertile during this time period. So in more easily parsed English, the eponymous YAP album is in the running for the best example of a great scene during its peak. The historical specifics are not important to the general population, and are probably known only to obsessive nutjobs like myself. That said, the music can be appreciated by anyone with ears. This is all one really needs to know about YAP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxvIuodPmEg A review I wrote on "Sunrise" sometime in the late 1990s: Downtempo is a music of subtlety, it is often the smallest details that make or break a track. And so it is with this song that it's the fiddly bits - the spaciousness of the reverb, timing of the delay effect on the main melody - that lend so much passion and immediacy. The main arpeggiation is wonderfully mesmerizing as the rest of the song fades away and leaves it pulsating in the foreground. Simply, but powerfully emotive.

  15. My friend Louie works @ the 'Bucks and has to open tomorrow. I sent him a link to that. He's crying in his beer now.
  16. Possibly THE great left-coast breaks album of the first half of the 1990s.
  17. So in front of me I have a Pico DAC, GLite (v1) and DPS. I also have two of the male-male RCA adapters that came with the Pico DAC. Unfortunately, the Pico DAC will not clear the DPS -> GLite power umbilical unless I attach the PDAC upside down (and therefore reverse the R/L connectors.) This isn't a huge deal, but I was looking forward to trying out this particular Stupid Pico Trick. What would happen if I connected the PDAC to the loop out jacks on the GLite? Would I get sound, get nothing, or maybe blow something up? Do they make 90
  18. I've given Gridlock's Formless 3-4 listens now. It's growing on me quite a bit. "Re/Module" sound so much like 1994-era Autechre, it's not funny.
  19. No suitable nodes are available to serve your request. The message you have entered is too short. The dark side will give you cancer, buddy.
  20. The message you have entered is too short. What do you MEAN "rococo" isn't a kind of chocolate?

  22. He's "couch surfing." Edit: Sauce.
