Iono man, your k340 seems to be optimized for listening via cat whiskers... sure you are in the headphone and not whisker transmitters anymore? (I'll add replies later if anything, gotta go to class and grow smart).

Well ok then. You cannot quote my rig for lacking power, my amplifier has more power than yours could ever produce. Cannot quote my rig for lacking tubes (it has a few). Cannot quote my rig for being single-ended and thus weak (cause guess what, differential drive all the way), cannot quote my rig for having poor k340 (fully modded by Larry, including cables and 4-pin XLR), cannot quote my rig for crappy source, although it is not the most marvelous. It does reproduce deep bass though, my speakers answer for that one just fine. My setup has issue with bass impact usually because the fit does not work very well with my head, but i can use my hands to get it there for critical listening. (Humans are very evolved creatures). I do not listen very loud because I like my hearing. And now you are telling me that your K340 rig will touch the sub-bass work on Hallucinogen's In Dub ? Fill me in on what you did to your k340? Is there a subwoofer upgrade anywhere in the room?

I don't have any taste for either PS-1 or DT770, or even L3000, but depth of bass on K340 is what kills the headphone for me. Everything else on it is magical. Lack of strength on it is not so much an issue of the can, rather issue of the fit (with good fit it is there), but this can will never reach below 40.

I generally stick to West (sharing a key, the other guy plays on East). MaloS. But it will be unlikely that I'll play DotA seeing how Unreal Tournament 3 is out today

Well, 'woah' is better than k340 'where?'

EMF = Electro-Magnetic Flux Magnetic fields are induced strictly by moving charges. I.E. Current. Oh, and for amusement I guess. Take 100 watt amplifier (decently powerful, ditto?) P = V^2 / R (I am going to use resistance, not impedance just for this example). Let R = 4 ohm, so like 100 watts into 4 ohms. V^2 = 100 * 4 = 400. Oh shit. 100 watts into 4 ohms is only 20 volts... Current-based amplifiers are far more resistant to highly reactive loads (i.e. impedance that varies alot with frequency). That generally means the flat response is easier to achieve. (easier is a relative term). I guess I should show the easiest way to think about all of these things. Dynamic driver is basically an inductor with a magnet in the middle. Magnet produces a field, which has influence on charges. The current going through the inductor wire will basically be charges that will be moved depending on the direction and strength of the current. Planar drivers are 2 stators surrounding a diaphragm. The stators are the ones with the current, in opposition. The introduced field by those, this time magnetic (a magnet actually produce electrostatic field), will move the diaphragm, which has charges in it. Disclaimer: Corrections requested if I am wrong here somewhere, this is my understanding of the subject...

You can go by those equations for the most part Jonathan. Just keep in mind the fact that impedance will vary with frequency, there are two types of amplifiers, current and voltage based (well ok, main type, speaker that works by amplifying power is also plausible, but increasingly complex). Current amplifier will increase obviously current, and subsequently voltage, voltage amplifiers boost voltage and subsequently current. V and I at any given moment are related by impedance, but if you want to talk over times longer than infinitely short you have more things at play. Amplifier ratings are providing with maximum average power output more or less, not account for spikes, frequency variants, roll-offs and blah blah. In short - the equations I listed there are what you as a user should be concerned with being careful over. Everything that goes on from there is for madmen (or spritzer).

Johnathan, here is a simple lovely not for the future: Amp has gain. Say gain of 10, feed it 2V, it will give you 20V, feed it less - it will give you less. Volume is proportional to output voltage. Power: depends on voltage(Vo) at the output, and impedance (Zl) of whatever you are driving. Vo^2 / Zl. Amplifier ratings for speaker amps come in: power into 4 ohms (Zl = 4 ohms, Vo = max amp's input * gain), power into 8 ohms (Zl = 8 ohms)... You can make your conclusions fairly easily from here. You will notice that for example Headamp GS-1 ,voltage and gain wise is the same as most SET amps, but sure ain't driving any speakers because it will fry due to inability to handle the power output. Does not mean that if you make a SET power amp drive 600 ohms, the SET will choke, more so most likely it won't care and will just go on doing its thing. Won't necessarily sound good though.

I like the potential of Proline 2500 driver, but the treble in it is idiotic for our purposes. It is not weird at all, its fairly flat, mild recession in the mids... UNTIL you get into the treble region. The treble is useful for monitoring purposes, which is what the can is for. That part is annoying as hell. - I have not found a headphone that suits my tastes.

Iono about that man, iono... The differences I heard were between inspiring and depressing... I guess you also have to account for the fact that I cannot stand a Grado in any shape or form.
-
Aaaah, this brings us to a great 'compromise' point. At this rate cans are compromise out of question, and thus not high end =] Yes, my rig is also made of big noise-making devices
-
You got the bass-heavy k340...those suck. ^.^ If RS-1 rolls your bot thought, cudos to you xD
-
Interesting how you say that k340 loses its soundstage at high volumes. That only happens with mine when using a weak amplifier - on the other hand with my speaker amp the soundstage only improves with higher volumes, and everything gets better (treble/mids)...but then my version lacks on bass strength.

Ya, please. Here are the requirements: It has to look like this: Since I cannot grow my own.

Meh. And head-fi consists of large numbers of people butt-kissing their favorite products. Iono which flavor is better man. In both groups there are interesting people...those people seem to appear on this forum and the other, but frankly the nature of this place not being polluted with large numbers of recommendation requests is already more interesting. I cannot tell a newbie to 'fuck off and go read' on head-fi, I have to be polite, which is annoying to put it mildly. New people don't deserve half the info they are provided with there and yet no-one tells them that. Society is grand.

... I was trying to play on the idea of 'it won't do anything' >.<

Hey man hey man. This is some ultimate audio gear right there. It is so transparent you won't even know its there.

Too much edition 9 love in Headfi....have u listened to them?

Just sheer facts... iono man, s-logic can be typed far faster than 'angled drivers' >.< All cans suck anyways ^.^ -

W5000 angles the drivers. No other cans that I am aware of do. (Save k1000 if you want to count that haha). Different approach to dealing with echoes, and it produces different results. W5000 soundstage is quite quite nice. -
I like this forum. There is alot of bashing going on =] And for all purposes of amusement, any particular reason my 1250 dollar speaker amp drives HD600 better than Ray's 1175 Raptor?

Don't doubt. I plugged it into SS1. I guess it is a lil bit better than Hornet...but Hornet is portable. -

Actually more so. My statement is with regard to preference. If you listen to strictly classical orchestral - the question is easy to answer. If we talk presentation of say... Liquid Tension Experiment - HD650 failed for me. Every time. Edition 9 did pretty well. The best results I got were out of HD600, but another person chose RS-1 for the job. Huh? Aren't we all here for what the music is supposed to sound like? Well why are 2 people choosing different headphones for the same record? -

For any headphone you will choose, I will find a live show that does not sound anything like that headphone. -
