probably is measuring the voltage stator to stator, so a 450V power supply
here's the voltages that the electrostatic amps run on (that i know of):
450V: Egmont?
600V: HEV90, Aristaeus, Gilmore All-Triode (Woo GES)
700V (+/- 350): 717, 007t, KGSS
800V (+/- 400V): Blue Hawaii, ES-1?

What amp runs on 900v?

I'm expecting another n_maher cable this week
I think Nate will forgo his senior year of Cable College and turn pro next year

They can be had for as little as 800$ in Japan if you are lucky. The normal price over there is about 1000$
That's not true, the lowest I ever saw them in Japan was the equivalent of about $1350

What would be considered a reasonable price for a used O2?
$1200, or $1500 if it's the export black one

Yes, it's very true that even reading the temp off a heatsink will yield very little information about the junction temperature. Based on what I've read (pretty little, actually) if you're operating a heatsink at more than half the part's rated junction temperature you're probably in trouble. But taking chassis measurements is at least a place to start and is near the temperature that the other components (like caps) are being exposed to.
You can get the junction to case C/W in the datasheet, then add in the C/W for your mounting components. I try to keep all measured heatsink temps at 60C or below, 50C or below if it's exposed

I got parts for a Japanese SR-007 without an serial number hassle. Just told him what I wanted after a few minutes of audiophile banter on the phone.
I asked for a FR graph of the new Omega II but they said it's not available

The Alps Rk50 is great...but has anyone ever seen a commercial product that uses it? Besides HeadRoom offering it as an option...it's been around for a while and ive never seen it except for a handful of crazy DIYers. There must be some big customer for them

You are not an idiot, and i believe you know how to use a calculator.
f = 1 / (2 * pi * r * c) (3db point)
So for 300 ohm headphones
f = about 11hz with 50uf
want the same thing with 32 ohms headphones, guess how much
The iPod (4th gen) is -10dB @ 20Hz with iBuds, which i think are 32 ohms. It's probably worse now

Too bad I don't like Firefox all that much for Mac.
I immediately installed FireFox once I got a Mac, since I've used it for years on PC. It seems to crash at least once a day, especially opening pages with embedded videos
I'll go to Safari if there's add-ons that let me do gestures to open links in new tabs (foreground or background), and also saves tabs when closing/crashing. Does it offer these features?

Why do some amps have two volume controls?
My HeadAmp KGSS has two volume knobs. I always set them at the same setting. I would prefer one knob and not have to set the volume twice or use both hands at once. They are stepped attenuators so it isn't too difficult to do so, but one knob would still be more convenient.
Is there a reason for this?
Because I couldn't afford to buy balanced attenuators directly from DACT, and nobody stocked them for DIYers

When I was a kid there wasn't even people in Lego sets
Sponsors or not, lego is, imo, much better than most other thing a 6 y.o. would like to buy (which would be things like various Pokemon and other fotm cards/plastic figures).
I think I hit the Lego peak when it was Town/Space/Pirates/Castle. Which were all 4 types of civilizations in the universe. Then it got a little weird and they started adding things like people who live in the ocean, and then came the Space: Brought to you by Star Wars stuff
-
I was with my 6 y.o. son and bought this:
Only Star Wars lego set left in the store, they are very popular here at the moment.
I guess this is not the time to say that I have never ever seen a Star Wars film.
I remember Legos before they sold out to sponsors

Justin, if you do update the list, I'd like to give you my headfi name (SR-71Panorama) since I ordered from your website, you probably dont already have that info.
(sr71panorama AT gmail DOT com, with an order for 2 units)
You're on a special secret list and I'm going to try and get it done next week
-
I do have a system up now that allows people to enter their order #, and a password, and see the status of their order. However, right now that's only for paid orders. I haven't decided if I'm going to enter pre-orders on it too.
-
Heh, one can only hope. I know he is slammed with orders and busy as can be building, shipping and so forth.. so my hopes aren't high.
I was debating offering to write an order taking application for him to help automate all of that. I'd do it for the fun of it (ie: free).. and it would surely be easier to monitor and update than a 173 page thread on headfi :>
But then billy would spam it with fake orders...so i'd have to take some money, which I don't want to do.

You really think he's going to answer you here?
why not? i'll try to do it this weekend

Ok, I cannot grasp the ridiculousness of this situation: I was sent the Omega II (used obviously) from South Africa, and now Dutch customs want to charge me VAT and customs for the new retail price in Europe even though the system was originally bought from the UK Stax distributor Symmetry Systems (stickers on the box). Now, VAT and customs are close to what I paid for the system to begin with, something around $2000, and there's no way I'm going to pay that.
First of all, it couldn't possibly be new even if it looks new. It's not like I let my agent buy a new Stax system from the UK in South Africa and then have it shipped to my place.
I called the customs guy several times today and his point is that even if it was sold by a UK company, I still have to pay VAT because the Omega II could have been bought from a buyer in South Africa (which is the case). So because it was sold from Europe but not sold to an European buyer, EU tax could have been circumvented.
So he insists that I produce an invoice that the thing was also sold to an EU buyer. An invoice that obviously does not exist.
But I thought there is no possibility of the item being bought new in the UK and shipped to South Africa without EU tax being paid. It is made in Japan only, so taxes would have been paid upon arrival in the UK when the UK distributor imported it. Is that not the case?
Would dealers, as a business, be exempt from paying the sales tax? That's how it works here

postjack,
from now on, just use this:

How about the iBasso D2? Same DAC chip for $300 less. I believe the two amps feature the same DAC chip, but the PICO has an upsampling circuit and the D2 doesn't. It will be interesting to hear the two side by side.
http://www.ibasso.com/ShowNews.aspx?ID=63
Including the asynchronous resampling circuit, oscillator, DC/DC converter, voltage regulators & filtering, output stage for the DAC, i have around $35 in components surrounding the $5 DAC chip. None of these things are being mentioned. "Same DAC chip" is really simplifying things too much. It is not an "all-in-one" type chip where you just apply power and go. If it were that simple, I could side-step to a different $5 chip and end the comparisons, which is exactly what iBasso did but for other reasons. I'm trying to figure out if it's a good thing that iBasso wants to draw this comparison instead of against other DAC/Amp units.

I have a question for the stax/e'stat experts: is there a reason why a qualified DIYer could not construct a modern version of a SRD7mII type of transformer/energizer? I'm not necessarily on the fast track for this anymore but looking around, these seem pretty hard to score (and in various stages of old age).
Good audio transformers are very expensive, it would be cheaper to make a good amp than a good transformer box

cool! what color (or combo) did you get?
he went black

It should be the same.

Exercise equipment! First, Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells:
and a Body-Solid EXM1500S home gym:
I choose this gym because of its small footprint, uses a weight stack for resistance, it was very highly rated and, lastly, I got a great deal on it. Fortunately, the blond didn't come with it or I'd have to start my own "getting divorced" thread.
I got my first workout today getting the gym and dumbbells up the 27 steps from our driveway to our front door and then into the house. See, it's already working.
You should get a set of TO Bands to go with that (really)

It's a differential output, measured stator to stator, so the absolute maximum if the design allowed for it would be 2 * power supply voltage peak to peak. The Blue Hawaii will output 1500vpp, slightly less than 2 * it's 800V of power supply (the bottom of the waveform will clip first because of the type of design, same with the Stax 007t). At 800Vpp, SPL w/ Omega II is 106dB, so this would be louder than that. Max output of KGSS & Stax 717 are both around 1200vpp, Stax 007t is probably somewhere around 950vpp
