Different headphones do different tones better
Even if what you said is 100% true and unquestionable, that alone makes tone subjective IMO.
-
If the tone is off, the headphones suck.
Tone is very subjective IMO. It's very easy to say "the tone is off" when you don't like a pair of headphones, but the tone may be just fine for other people.
If you have a particular sound that you like, fair enough, but I also think that there's something to be said for variety while at the same time having basic standards for sound reproduction. Since when does having standards (accurate tone, decent balance, fast enough to provide detail, no bass bloat or shrieking highs, and decent imaging) mean someone's biased? Towards what? Good music?Biased against other people's opinions that are different from yours?
Just because you call it "basic standards" doesn't mean that it's not just personal preference.
Audio-Technica > DenonATs suck because the midrange tone is off.

Actually, you don't get to use starting blocks in a 40 yard dash IIRC. This should be a pretty big difference.
-
Some cat broke it down with videotape and looked at the time when he crossed the imaginary 40. I'm sure if he ran a real 40, it'd be even faster. Hell no, I wouldn't know how to do it myself.
I see. That should be a good way to do it if he was able to estimate the imaginary 40 yard line accurately.
-
OK, just a random tidbit that has nothing to do with anything, but I thought it was interesting as hell:
Usain Bolt's 100m translates to a 3.82s 40 time. I honestly didn't think it was humanly possible to get under 4 seconds.
For reference: fastest official NFL combine 40 was Bo Jackson's 4.17, and fastest with digital stopwatches is Chris Johnson's 4.24.
How did you get that number?
You can't accurately translate 100m times to 40 yard times. Just not possible without more information.

When I typed it manually, it worked.
I was just going to suggest trying this.

See, JP is the common denominator. Now I know what I need.
Everything he touches comes alive?!
Maybe he can also resurrect dead drivers? That'd be pretty useful.
-
I can also hear music coming out from the output transformers of my Sound Quest SQ-84 that JP nums used to own. I was kind of surprised when I first heard it, but it makes sense that output transformers would generate some sound.
It's not very loud on the SQ-84, but that's compared to regular headphones like the K701. Since the K1000 is much less efficient, it probably makes the transformers much louder by comparison. I can also see the higher impedance of the K1000 (compared to speakers) to be a factor, but I don't know enough to make any guesses there.

Congrats!
I want pics of the birthday cake.

That's fascinating. I'll read the article completely later, but just from skimming it, it looks like she was looking for correlation? I'd be interested if some sort of function could be gleaned (e.g. "human ( input ) == output" ). I suspect that might also be a function of individuals, as well. Less evolved individuals might only be derivative functions, whereas us musicians would be complex, and hippies might have a mix of real and imaginary.
Complex is basically a mix of real and imaginary....
What does that say about musicians and hippies?

How is the Amarra software licensed? Per user, like Microsoft Office or per machine? If I buy the Amarra software soon I would temporarily load it onto the house Mac for now then a dedicated Mac for just my music later on.
Al, is your Amarra 4 a Mac only interface or can it take a digital signal from any source like the ULN 8?
I haven't looked up the details, but since people talked about dongles in the first page, I think it's per dongle.
-
yes the HP3 is seriously inefficient, the reason some folk drive them directly from power amps. I am surprised that your amp clipped. The efficiency of the lcd1 is a huge bonus , it is like the YH1K in this regard.
..dB
The SQ-84 is basically a 10W integrated amp. According to the designer, there are some people that use it to drive K1000s.
I thought the K701 was inefficient, but it's nothing compared to the HP-3.
The clipping is present in that album (Thirteenth Step), it's very poorly mastered. The clipping went away when I turned down the volume to my normal listening level, so it wasn't the album.
The HP-3 should be able to handle at least 1W without clipping, so it was most likely the amp.
-
and the HP3 sounded more balanced and smooth across the frequencies ..dB
edit - yes I am just stirring
Not sure which sounded more balanced, but the HP-3 was a little smoother IIRC.
The HP-3 was also a lot harder to drive. Somebody at the meet had a CD with a lot of dynamics and low bass notes, and he managed to get my SQ-84 to clip driving the HP-3 at reasonable listening levels (but still louder than my normal listening level). The SQ-84 outputs 10W into 8Ohms, so it should be able to provide ~500mW for the HP-3.

I talked to Sankar at the meet. The automatic adjustment method that is currently being used doesn't work on my head. He responded that a lot of people were having that problem and that they were going to make there own frame for the next release.
Caveat: My memory isn't very good anymore. This is what I remember but could easily be incorrect.
I talked to him about the same thing. The earcups don't pivot far enough, so the headphones are like this:
|(0_0)|
on my head when they should be:
\(0_0)/
If they can fix the comfort issues and make them sound even better, I'll have to buy a pair. The sound was very good as it is. I thought it sounded kind of similar to my dBel84-modded Yamaha HP-3, but with a bigger soundstage.

Happy Birthday!
-
This may explain why Al preferred the sound from the Woo over the BHSE. Of course, maybe it doesn't matter.
The source for the BHSE was Justin's XA5400ES. The playback software issues should only affect the Pico that was connected to the computer.
-
If it doesn't leak more than the D5000 I might end up buying a pair.
-
I bought a pair of modded Yamaha HP-3 from dB. It arrived very quickly and in great condition. Can't think of a better way to get my first pair of Orthos.
-
Saying stuff that sounds reasonable is my specialty. Actually designing or building the amps is much harder.
-
The slew rate doubles whenever you put 2 single ended amps together to make a balanced amp.
The output power is 4x only when the amp is voltage-limited, which is usually the case for SS amps driving high impedance headphones like the Senns. When the amp is current-limited, the output power is only 2x.

Damn! It seems that the static problem exists only on the main and second floors of my home. But when I'm in my basement as I was this morning, no static?
Do you live next to a radio station or something like that?
-
Well, now I'm thinking you might be right. While it didn't appear that the static always coincided with the latency drops, my desktop shows absolutely no latency issues, while the latency on my laptop is quite frequent.
I've tried disabling the drivers on anything that might cause the problem, but haven't found the answer yet.
Any suggestions?
Back when I used Trend Micro PC-cillin (came with my laptop ) as my antivirus program, it was giving me problems with DPC latency. Now I'm using McAfee with my sister's multi-user license, and it does much less damage to the latency. Next time you have the problem, you can try disconnecting the internet and turning off the antivirus to see if things get better.
Other programs/drivers/devices might be factors too, and it also depends on the hardware specs, operating system, "power options" settings, etc. Once in a while I still get big latency spikes, but it doesn't happen often enough to bother me too much.
If it is a latency problem, increasing buffer sizes and tweaking thread priority settings might also improve things. Of course, if it's not a latency problem, none of this will help.
Didn't help.Just in case it is interference from the power lines, you can try running off battery power for both the Pico and the laptop. This way, everything would be battery powered. You might have to change the power settings so that you don't get reduced processor speeds, which might cause latency problems.
You can also try removing other USB/Firewire devices if there's any attached.
-
Good suggestion, will give it a shot.
... Nope, still there.
I've found that dropout-pops are often caused by wireless cards, but there are other possibilities. You can try downloading and running this program:
If the static/pops coincide with big spikes in the DPC latency, it's probably a latency issue.
-
Ok, so you weren't joking! Definitely a significant improvement I've noticed after a brief listen.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem that I think is with my laptop. It's causing intermittent static. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, different USB cable and each port with no improvement.
Any suggestions?
Are you sure it's static and not dropout-pops? If it might be dropouts, try disabling your wireless card.

I actually didn't realize what it meant until I saw Dreadhead's post.
