Look at it like an expensive dac, with a free ipod dock, instead of an expensive ipod dock with a built in dac.
Or a dac with an spdif out
Except the DAC3 is a $1000 DAC selling for $2500 IMO.
-
I'm wondering: out of the people who might consider buying this thing, how many even fuck with mp3s? Seems like they're trying to hit 2 separate crowds at once...
BINGO. Give this man a prize. They have a whole raft of technologies in there but they pointed at very different market segments. The Wadia represents a simpler and more flexible solution. However, this is coming from someone who has no interest in either the Bel Canto or Wadia dock.
-
But wait, it does this, "iPod's stereo signal to 5.1- or 7.1-channel sound" Seriously though, $2000.00, even for MSRP for a dock.
Right .... or I could buy the Wadia and route the digital output into my HT processor and convert it to 5.1 or 7.1 there. Hmmm .... let me see which way I should go.

Check the interconnects, take two aspirin and call me in the morning.

Ouch. Why, if I am out $1600 for Edition 9, re-cable and spare parts its not like getting the DA11 for free? Not that I expect him to take me up on a silly but serious offer.
Well if you have to ask, that pretty much says it all.

I bought his DacMagic. It was a pleasant transaction all around. Great communication and superb double boxed packaging. A class act.

I love my HDD based system, which makes me all the more irritated that there is still no standard delivery system for high-res digital music that can be transferred to and integrated with a HDD system.
x2 on that. But it is coming.
-
Well I'm 52 and the HDD based music system has fundamentally changed the way I listen to music, and for the better IMO. Burning disks is not an option anymore. I want to be able to take my entire music collection with me when I travel and i want to be able to listen when I have the small segments of free time I now have. I still rip almost all of my music from CD's, but the CD's themselves are not really used after that. The pre-pro is a good idea and it is what I use in my HT set-up. I do not have a problem using a pre-pro in my 2-channel setup, but at that point I might as well just buy a DAC. If it is not a Sony then so be it.

Could one possibly mod it to include such?
I do not know about this specific model but if I recall correctly, APL used to have a digital input option on the 3910 mod. However, I think they pretty much ripped a good chunk of the original electronics out and replaced them anyway. Anyway, I'm sure it is possible.
-
In 2009 no digital input = FAIL. I will not be auditioning any one box units that do not have at least one digital input. If I'm paying for a great DAC I want to be able to use it for other transports (and yes I am talking about the PCM DACs).
