  1. yeah dealing with Dinan was A+++ awesome with the unmodded 717 I bought, really pro job on everything I'm trying to remember what he dissed this one time as to the reason why anyone would hate on him, anyone remember?
  2. A fair bit of inference here, but if the R10's and maybe Q10's are the dynamics that to some compete with the O2, Seriously, the D7000 would have to be a revelation from God compared to the D5000's A REVELATION OF GAWDD!
  3. after spending some time with w11jpn, K340, 900ti, MD5000, K271, I'm mostly curious about the 900LTD... but I'm an Audio-Technica fanboy so what do I know
  4. Could you recable the headphones to fix this problem?
  5. So any pads that you find that are brown are the older ones? Here's some brown ones on eBay: STAX Ear Pads for SR-007 Series (Pair) BROWN - eBay (item 390173628480 end time Apr-21-10 15:06:02 PDT)
  6. I like hearing gear and then not listening to it for a few days and then going back and hearing it again.
  7. Yeah, just letting loose on a rant about something that's interested me for a while. One edit I would've made about my main point is to indicate that the concept of fear is the only available motivation I see for revolution. Humans are lazy by nature imo. A good quote from the movie 'Waking Life': "What is the more universal human characteristic... fear or lazyness?" I think that they are equally universal, but also that it is possible that we can work them against each other, however, this would most likely be in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event. (natural disaster, meteorite, war) I agree that progress can be made faster and quicker. An interesting idea I heard recently is what if there was a united human interest in space travel? Ok, that sounds a little vague... More like, what if youth were more encouraged to study it and governments were for pooling their resources to make it a reality? What if we knew from a young age that life was possible not only on this earth; what if we as humans claimed our birthright in the stars? An interesting perspective on human nature, taken from this video: LaRouchePAC Similarly, what if music had an integral part in international politics, the politicians themselves being musicians having studied music for years to gain mastery over their instrument, (having a practical understanding of working for the American Dream) and were able to communicate/improvise with other politicians? Of course this really isn't limited to the American Dream exclusively but also extends to other nationalities, and so this actually isn't the American Dream we're talking about at all, but more like first-hand knowledge of hard work and sacrifices made for something larger than yourself. This is really what a politician of all people needs the most. Music because it is a universal language, but also, as the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer says, the only art that does merely copy ideas, but actually embodies the will to life itself. Improvisational music in particular because when music is improvised in the moment it is the truest representation of the musician's intent in that moment, that intention being expressed through the music made. (people who aren't calm and composed don't play in time/in tune for example) Not that they will play music instead of communicating with words, but rather that they will do both. And Through playing music with eachother they will likely gain an appreciation for the infinite creative beings that they are/we all are. Eventually musicians/politicians would find that the music they make/discussions they have really just sound/work the best when everyone agrees. And hey, as a side-benefit for audiophiles there would be a definite resurgence in the invention of new AD/DA conversion technology. These performances/meetings would have to be recorded somehow lol Yeah I do too. Although for a while I stopped screening it out in music school because I figured hey, everyone who is a musician has got to be down to earth and a genuinely nice human being. Not true, as music schools have their share of prima donnas, and I unfortunately had to flirt with one and ultimately anger their dark side. :/ (Hopefully, after a few years of studying music seriously and having to make sacrifices to do so their outlook will change. This isn't entirely unrealistic considering the work that goes into being an improv musician; the 'heavy' musicians practice as much as a student in medical school studies) Yeah, I used to even think hotness was inversely proportional to personality, and so I would actually pay less attention to girls that were attractive. But this was back when I had teenage insecurities though, so I don't still consciously exercise it. (I have different insecurities now - about career choices lol) Funny enough, the snap judgment that was made back then did happen to hold true 9 times out of 10 imo. I think it becomes different as people get older, because there are more opportunities for someone to mature as a person/define themselves as a person unrelated to what others perceive their superficial value to be. But also the world that was once very small opens up to a much larger world. (just how large is of course up to the imagination) And so our criteria often changes to place more emphasis on personality, career choice, passion/vision, etc I brought up that last bit about the imagination to relate to the idea of humans taking their place in the stars, and although I wouldn't consider it altogether incorrect to relate the statement to psychoactive drugs, I personally don't believe that the use of psychoactive drugs alone would lead to any lasting changes in human nature. (and my buddy who went to Peru would likely agree)
  8. Biologically the human brains last connections formed are to a cluster of neurons on your heart. This happens when you're 22. So you have a culture that worships a youthful standard of beauty and perhaps also the emotional immaturity/sense of entitlement that goes with the age? Who knows... I've seen 40 year olds that were less mature than 15 year olds, so there have got to be other factors as well such as how core beliefs are formed... So in a society that controls its populace through fear, prejudice actually becomes the first stage in the pipeline. And as our natural animal instincts are reprogrammed/replaced with irrational fears the need to transcend the imprisonment/repression is expressed through musical/artistic expression, youth rave culture (different forms of tribal gathering), sexual promiscuity, etc. Not, however, to give the impression that any revolution would be calm and composed or even intellectualized... I have a friend that went to Peru and lived with a shaman for 6 weeks, who learnt about the ancient healing arts of shamanism etc... The shaman had learnt how to work within the mindstate induced by ayahuasca from a very young age. When he was 8 or 10 he went into the woods and lived alone under the influence of the drug daily and survived on his own for months at a time. The result: now when with someone who is under the influence of the same drug, he has an uncanny understanding of the mindstate as well as the ability to manipulate the mindstate to the point where it borders on the metaphysical or magic. Or course everyone observing these events are under the influence of a psychoactive drug, so claims of any such powers would be unsubstantiated in a scientific model until a more controlled experiment could be performed. Anyways, for the people involved it is very real etc etc, (get to the point man!) and my point is that even though the shaman is considered a special person with special powers (in their tribe as well as by north american native american elders/other spiritual leaders) he lived the most savage/animalistic lifestyle of anyone in the tribe. So even though we as humans both have elements of animal and elements of evolved humanoid (divine humanoid), I think that just how effective fear has been to limit us to our lowest common denominator (de-evolution to animal savagery) it can similarly elevate to our highest abilities of compassion, invention/prodigy and all other qualities we have been programmed to believe are limited to us either because of our class, creed, or through the casualties of day-to-day causality. Anyways, now that I've made my point I can continue with my buddy's story. He was being setup for an arranged marriage with one 12 year old girl in the tribe (he was 18 at the time). And since he didn't want to go through with it and thought they would kill him if he didn't he ran away fearing for his life... Yup it does, I'll take some pics shortly.
  9. the O2 out of the 717 seems to me what it wouild be like if an AD2000 and AH-D5000 had babies. Midrange a little recessed, fat low end (D5000) but the entire frequency range tight as hell and fast. (AD2000) Nicer soundstage and more transparent than either though- this headphone baby prbly had nutritious food when he was growing up. the AD2000 borders on stat technicality by sheer speed & impact but it falls short not being able to effortlessly pluck tones out of the air like a Staxen. this is just the 02 with the 717, I'm sure it's different with other amps
  10. NEW development... Ok, so I know where to find a board, I just need a PSU board... how complex is it? ...I know a board designer that might owe me a favour.
  11. I remember you saying you can buy the parts for a Blue Hawaii for 1300, so where can you buy the boards, find the parts list? Sign me up! hah
  12. Thanks again for the feedback man, I think am gaining an understanding of your philosophy to this hobby. And I can see myself enjoying the process of listening comparisons in the future now that I have found my ideal headphone/transducer (O2's), hopefully I will be less concerned with quick-results and more willing to take the effort to know my shit. I think this attitude is next to impossible for newbs who don't have as lot personally invested in the hobby. Either that or they have too much personally invested. (emotionally or monetarily) Either way, gear they can't afford will always be revered with a sense of awe. And the narrative we would all like to see concerning gear that people currently own will be incomplete because of a lack of data/experience, or an equally damaging inability/unwillingness to internalize the information because they are equating $, rarity, and heresay with enjoyment. (thinking deep down that what they have isn't good enough because it doesn't achieve enough of one of the above criteria - the reason why the same people on Head-Fi post the same shit over and ever again,, to hear how much other people want gear that they have... if you are really happy with the gear you have, why not post less and listen to it more?) It's important to enjoy the process of auditioning gear and maintain as much neutrality as possible so we are able to hear the different variables that are tested for in gear. To 'remove oneself' from the process of listening to gear is performing at a high-level and people who do so deserve a lot of respect. Who knows, maybe they can prevent the newbs from making the same mistakes over and over, though I'm not sure if this learning can be accomplished in the absence of direct experience. (like buying wall-warts in a chasis for 7k, or being slapped around a bit by people on a forum, or personally auditioning diverse gear, different components in the signal path etc) Anyways, I'm really happy with the O2's that I have, it's been a long time coming. And thanks for getting me to reconsider the quality of the Assemblage. I'm going to compare it to the Apogee MiniDAC I have. (which has been my reference DAC in the studio for the last 2 years) It's a pity that the Parasound didn't get the audition it deserved. (because it is nice) Not being 24/96 took it out of the running for use as a reference DAC as it's considered standard to have a 24bit depth for production,, also the main reason why I was so willing to let it go. ...Trying not to let the rationalizations of the last paragraph confuse the intent of this post which is that I learnt a lot from your posts. Thanks for taking the time to write both of the posts
  13. yeah, I tried to leave that open by saying, (or some other differences between the DACs) although that could make it sound like I'm talking about just a single piece, instead of a method of implementation or larger idea. So yeah, you're right I put too much emphasis on the PMD100/PMD200 change. However, the change between the 1100HD and 2.7 I heard was so dramatic that I boxed up the Parasound 1100HD and sold it that day. I only heard the change with one pair of Senn HD280's. I didn't even bother set it up in my treated room/studio. Later, I read the jeff chan Assemblage review and the way he described the difference between the two chips was exactly what I was hearing, and I was stoked to see someone rationalise it in front of me. Really, I should've AB'd the units more and done a proper controlled experiment, so I let my ego get to me by just relying on a firsthand impression and memories of all the praise you had for the 2.7.
  14. OK, I think I know what you mean catscratch by grain... Honestly, I don't care if there is headroom the amp can't reach that I'm missing right now. I'm just stoked to hear what tha fuk is going on, it's like a religion or something I'd rather know how shitty my gear was than not, because I think I can hear equally far into a piece of music now And for me, it's if anything a challenge to make even more exciting music. That's another part of it, if you have expensive, quality gear you gotta represent it. Floss those wheels, bouiYEE! 15. I'd like to try just be content for a while with these headphones. They're a dramatic improvement from the studio gear in terms of detail, resolution, and overall amount of information. The only musicality they're missing in comparison is basically more sweetness of mids/more forward mids. I don't hear any grain. I think you listen at higher levels than I do. I can get these babies just purring softly and still have tons of detail. I guess the way to truly test them is test them against my buddy's 10k studio monitors in his treated studio. (I think they're Genelecs) If I'm still stoked about the O2's, I won't worry about it. For reference, my studio monitors and sub are 3.7k. The O2 system is 2.4k.
  16. Thanks. I'm expecting some Blue Jeans analog and digi cables any day. That should be interesting compared to the ratshack rca's and instead of toslink, I'll be using coaxial output from the 0404 iwth the new BJ cable. I expect some improvement, maybe not leaps in bounds, but I've always liked coaxial over toslink. Ohh that reminds me tho- I could compare some DACs quite nicely with headphones this revealing.... What about your O2 system? You're using a T1S to drive your pair?
  17. No more feeding Baby Jesus beans! goddammBaby Jesus has some loud f'in farts!! BTW, what's the story on the BHSE vs WES?
  18. meh, not worth 2x the price of a 717 for me. If they could be found used more commonly they might be put in 'hey maybe that's a good idea' territory. the only next step for me from here is a BHSE, if Justin is still making them in a few years... but yeah, I'm not suffering terribly right now either haha
  19. audio... file? ?? better listen to him, he has a gun,
  20. So I do agree with the Assemblage review that you can find on the net which also compares teh pmd100 to the pmd200. It, or some other difference between the 2.7 and the Parasound 1100HD is a dramatic improvement. Imaging and how the information imerges from a blacker background is noticed immediately. This gave even a Sennheiser HD280 a diffuse well-imaged soundstage. I think that it could even flex the imaging of orthos out beyond the cups. I'm excited for that. We'll see how it compares to the vinyl rig that I'm in the process of assembling. A european dude will be sending me oldschool goa vinyl to rip/record for him so the rare records aren't lost forever, lol. Lots of random, albeit monotomous, vinyl coming my way in the future.
  21. I really like the amount of treble energy on the O2, and I wouldn't want any more, though perhaps a tiny bit more presence/ flushing out in the mids.
  22. with electrostatic speakers I could see wanting tubes somewhere in the signal path, but maybe I just miss the SFD2 when listening to speakers. but screw speakers now... I'm going to be using the O2's from now on for mastering and production because they are easily moar better than my Mackie's and sub in a treated room. The Mackie's actually sound more musical but the O2's are technically in another league, and less fatiguing somehow too, so perfect for hours spent in front of a mix. ...but that's with the Apogee in the studio. Even though it's not really a fully controlled test on the DAC level, I still am simply hearing more with the stats and I recognize the sensation from spending some time with the K340's before these. ...and these don't have small soundstage/headstage imo at all,,, and it's nice to have come from yh100's before these (haha) because that's the first thing you notice, WAY more head/soundstage I actually find the yh100's tonally are pretty similar, though it depends a lot on the amp and how the mods to the headphone were done. @swt61, that looks like a picture from a video game, which one?
