Computer build help
crappyjones123 replied to crappyjones123's topic in GoRedwings19's Computer Help Hotline
I purchased a MacBook Air with mountain lion. When mavericks came out, I paid the $20 to buy it. Not sure where I stole software from them. Now I patiently wait for the next bullshit and misinformed comment from Dan about not buying software unless I buy their hardware. Ps. I just bought a MacBook Air that comes pre loaded with mavericks so I guess I paid twice for it then. -

For a $200 motherboard wish it didn't have as many problems. That being said, I intend on using the apple wireless keyboard and trackpad so hopefully I can find one port that works reliably. Asus and MSI aren't Hackintosh approved. I am trying to stick to the list pretty closely. Amazon now charges sales tax in Florida so I have been shifting to B&H and have found the prices to be comparable with 3 day free shipping. I'll give this one more try. If I have any more issues, then I'll send it all back as there's no telling as to what damage could have been done in transit to the other parts. -

Doug they worked initially. Then they all stopped working one at a time. I'll try some linux distro tonight. Marshall, I don't have a DMM handy but that drive is the only one dying/dead as it came bouncing around inside the box with no protection whatsoever. Drives that are 5+ years old are still running just fine. -

All 4 usb ports on the motherboard stopped working. Hard drive won't even turn on. Back they go. Anyone know if I'll need to do a fresh install if I change the motherboard out? -

Very nice peter. I had to go through 6 or 7 copies before I got a sharp one but I'm very happy with it. Small and light. -

Reviews say it has a hard time sometimes figuring out when one image ends and the next one starts. We shall see even if it needs to be split up in two instead of all 36 exposures at once I'm still saving a shit ton of time. -

Ari, time is not the issue. We were thinking of this - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1007388-REG/pacific_image_primefilm_xa_prime_film_xa_scanner.html Has batch scanning so the time is not a concern. I just don't want to do a couple of images at a time. I can just let it run in the corner for however long it needs to take. -

Build is complete. Took a couple of hours to get everything working (iMessages, app store, login issues in general) which required a bit of googling but I have everything set up now. Going to run some stability tests as it has frozen on some file transfers a couple of times now. There's solutions for everything but things aren't going to work right out of the box. So far rather enjoying it. It's great to see the sliders in Lightroom get applied in real time instead of having to wait for a few seconds at times. -

When I told the guy the cancel the whole order he asked if he could speak with his manager. After 5 minutes, he offered to over night a new case and offer a $20 discount on the new case to offset the shipping charge on the old one. Sent me a shipping label for the case that needs to go back as well. Kudos to that guy but I'm not dealing with newegg again. -

On the phone with customer service but they are saying the same thing. They will pay to ship it back but then the restocking fee applies. How the fuck do you restock a damaged case? -

And now they want me to ship it back to them on my dime. Fuck Newegg. -

I guess newegg hasn't changed their ways after all. 2 boxes arrived today. Computer case's side panel is bent on both sides. The box with all the parts that go on the inside came with no protection - just boxes of parts being tossed around on the inside. I regret this already. -

Shelly if you ever do this, make sure you follow every single instruction on the gear list. 3 difference trips to walmart and best but later, I learned that only a particular set of USB sticks/portable hard drives work with the installer. -
But...this is headcase. And that is not the headcase way, Shelly...

The guy actually said "IMHO" out loud... :sigh:

Opened up a box containing a relatively minty Nikon F5 and 16 rolls of Kodak Tri X 400 black and white film. Will have chemistry and other gear for developing film at home on Monday. Splitting a film scanner with a classmate of mine. Haven't decided which one for sure but hopefully sometime soon. As great as the xt1 was, I hadn't used it for 2 weeks and whenever I did use it in tough light, the metering worked maybe 10% of the time. In even light I preferred it slightly to the D800 but the moment you put a light source behind a subject or shoot with the sun in the background, it would completely black out the subject. No matter what I did, I could not get the metering to work properly. The d800 although not as much fun to use just gets everything right the first time. Focus locks on immediately and meters perfectly regardless of the light source positioning.

I don't use PS much at all so skipping the graphics card right now. If I find myself missing it, I'll grab a low end one - don't plan on gaming anytime soon. -

Yes ma'am. The tutorials make it seem pretty easy. No harder than following instructions. To avoid problems while debugging I stuck to the list of components that are verified to work. Will keep this thread updated on how it goes. -

OS X is just $20 but I have a macbook air so I can download it again as I paid for it when I was upgrading to Mavericks. Yosemite is going to be free to no worries on that account either. In typical head case fashion, I could not stick to the aforementioned budget and ordered the following. And a 128gb Samsung 840 Pro ssd for the OS and catalogs. Should be plenty of space since nothing else will be on that drive. Images all get stored in the 2tb drive which I can add to later once that fills up. Excited to have a desktop again. Still need a keyboard... -

Something to note - the $1000 build doesn't even have a dedicated gfx card...but I don't know what to cut down on. -

Marc, I already have a Dell Ultrasharp 27" monitor. I flirted with the idea of having another one of the same as I love the damn thing but it would block both speakers. Same issue with a used iMac.
