Called the bike rental place last week and they told me the smallest road bike they carry is a 50 and I need a 48 for Trek bikes. If I decide to make this, I will have to ship my bike which is a massive PITA

Take Jet Blue and it's $50 each way. That is what I am doing. I'm sure there is a local shop that will rent you a hard case.

The Jet Blue bike case check process was painless and is just $50

NYC riding way different than SoFlo, no hills to speak of but lots of small grades that work you. Brooklyn riding keeps you on your toes.
