Holy crap I just watched my laptop power cable spark and smoke

Featured Replies

I sent my laptop to get the charging pin replaced about a month ago. They did a fine job, but sent me a replacement charging cable/brick since the connector on my old one was a bit worn down.

The replacement didn't exactly exude confidence in build quality :o

It was working fine for a month, but just now I saw a spark in the middle of the cable which then caught into a small flame and burned a hole through the rubber covering. Fortunately it went out by itself and my computer wasn't damaged.

If I had my camera I'd post pictures of the cable; it's not a pretty sight.

Mother fucker the good "brand name" adapters aren't cheap (Targus and the likes).

God damn this has been a pretty shitty month.

What kind of lappie is it? I'd just ditch the bitch and get a new one. Clean slate.

It's a Compal CL56. It really is perfect for everything I use it for, and is pretty light and thin for a 15" notebook.

A replacement of similar proportions and power would be at least $800.

NOT what I need seeing how I have a shit load of other things I have to pay for in the coming months.

I've got a few igo power adapters at home I'm not using. When I get back I'll pm you.

Cool, thanks Dan.

Thanks Nate, if the thing with Dan doesn't work out I've found a Targus one for only a bit more money.

so are laptop power adapters built to only last about a year so they can make more money on their criminally over priced ones?

That would be up to the manufacturer, but planned obsolescence isn't a new idea :)
