But if you have the original studio masters in digital form, why go through the DAC->ADC process, unless people like artifacts of that process.

Of course, needledrops of other peoples material is a different matter.

They probably wouldn't try to get the rights either, instead of seeking the rights to the needledrop, it seems to make more sense to seek the rights to the master copies to put into digital formats.

Having the rights to release records is not the same as having the rights to releasing needledrops.

Isn't the rights issue one of the reasons that lead to the failure of DVD-A,

given that they had to obtain separate rights for each of the 2.0, 2.1, 5.1 mixes and different bit rates/depths?

The thing is, the computer will almost always have a CD drive in it, so they're not completely eshewing CD's, just the transport.
