B&W 802 Series 80 repair

You also want to pay attention to the type of capacitor, power rating, tolerance and physical size in addition to the capacitance value.

Mouser carries many options but if you want to go the exotic/boutique route such as Mundorf, RelCap, etc. you can also check Madisound, Parts Connexion, Michael Percy among other places. Some of them offer matching services which is not a bad idea for crossover parts for speakers.

  • Saw this B&W answer in one of the FAQs at the support site: We usually find that customers who alter crossover components are not fully satisfied with the results. They find that some aspe

  • Thanks, Monkey. Mine are super-clean; I think the (bookmatched) veneer is rosewood. Looks like new. They don't have the hoods over them or the posts for the hoods, but that's fine with me. The mid

Wow thanks! Didn't know I would get an answer.

I will check these places out. I found a place close to me also (Solen).

FP Lue -  Thanks for reviving this thread!  I just saw I asked a question 2 years ago.

I'm overseas, and my speaker started acting up, so I took the crossovers out.  I brought them back stateside with me, to the electronics guy I always took my stuff to.
I was surprised, but he said it would be too much for him.  So I finally got my fluke meter, and will take some time to figure it all out, if advice is available.
I'd love to hear them again.
Please let me know where you found your schematics, and your parts list(if you're able to find one, or put one together)

I will let you know. I am moving so I will start working on this in a few weeks probably.

Post all your results!

Just popping in to thank everyone, past & present, for the best thread on the 802 Series 80 to be found anywhere online. It's now 2019 and as many have already discovered, you have nothing available in terms of parts. So, all the know-how in this thread, dating back to the first decade of the 21st century, is absolutely invaluable.
Just this morning on eBay, I found some rare NOS replacement mid drivers at $500 each. I don't necessarily need new drivers, but I'm not paying that kind of money to tune up my 802's.
Bottom line, yes, I'm going to keep my speakers because outside of a nice pair of Maggie 3.6's (that my wife will never submit to), I don't think there's a better pair of speakers to be had for me. And they're still sounding very good, but at about 35 years old-  they're ancient. I know the crossovers have to need attention and I thinks some new rubber around the old drivers is due. However, in dollars and cents, I'll never get more than, say, $1300 for these speakers and tuning them up beyond a $500 budget just doesn't make sense for me. So, if you had to refurb your 802's with a $500 budget, what would you do?

When you say "then I replaced all the internal cables with 2.5 mm section OFC. I didn't think the sound changed so much for the better, I don't recognize them anymore." do you mean you like them better, or they sound worse?

And yes, pictures or it didn't happen.
