Music

From Kumbaya to Hammer Smashed Face.

  1. So, a friend of mine came across an artist recently that has really grabbed my attention. I know it's a bit way off the beaten path, but I'm enjoying it so much I just had to pass it along. And lets face it, most music like this doesn't exactly discover itself! Emilie Autumn She's a classically trained violinist who specialized in boroque pieces. She pretty much abandoned her classical career by the age of 18. She started her own label, releasing one boroque solo-violin album, On A Day... before developing a sound she describes as "Victoriandustrial" and her look as "Punktorian." Both seem quite fitting. A little bit of harpsichord, a little bit of violin wit…

The entire membran sacd collection is available from jpc.de for the unbelieveable price of about $5 per disc. All classical of course, the bach organ music (18 discs) is just wonderful. Also the olympia jazz sacd's (from the olympia jazz club in france) are available for about $10. Fixed price shipping of about $13 for all orders over $50.

  4. What the hell is going on at 1:39 of this track? That's more than a kick drum. On a side note: I challenge anyone with good bass on their headphones to listen to that track and say that the bass at that point isn't "visceral" (NSFW -- "I don't give a fuck you fucking fuck" being amongst the lyrics). You should feel that bass down somewhere around your diaphragm.

So a few days ago I was leafing through Guitar Player at the local library when I came across a short article on Wolfgang's Vault. It's a site which has a ton of cool memorabilia, but that's besides the point, it's the home of Vault Radio which has turned out to be the best internet radio station I've ever come across. The playlist has tons of songs from live concerts by Albert King, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, The Band, and many other rock artists from the 60's & 70's. Been listening to it ever since I found it.

Who has a DVD-Audio player? And what type of music do you like? I recently went thru my collection and found multiple duplicates of some of my DVD-Audio discs. I intend on giving them away to some lucky Head-Case member/s. I?ll post a list and I?ll have to figure out how the lucky people will pay for the shipping (I?m not going to pay for giving stuff away). My one caveat is that I don?t want to give these away so that someone can sell them. So recipients are honor bound to NOT RESELL these discs. If I find out that any recipients don?t have a DVD-Audio player, I?ll Kick their ASS! If I find the discs being resold, I?ll kick your ASS! If you say anything about …

Wow I just downloaded a live bootleg of them and I'm amazed. It's piano, bass, and drums, and half the time I can't tell what instruments are playing! It's sort of in the vein of later Miles fusion stuff, but they seem to be inspired by everything (the Beatles cover is crazy). This is the one I dled, give it a shot, it's awesome: http://www.archive.org/details/jfjo2005-08-25flac16

Has anyone heard this band's debut CD? They're spirit's of the 70s, no doubt. I think it's one of the better hard rock albums I've heard in a LONG time. I'm not sure I'd call it a great album, but it's a really solid debut. I'll be watching (and listening to) these guys, I think.

  11. Here is an idea I had... Idea.. I picked up a cd this mourning called "Artists choice, Norah Jones.. the music that matters to her" at the Starbucks in my side job. it is basically a CD with 14 tracks of music that means a lot to Norah Jones, some tracks are from Billie Holiday to Johnny Cash. on the way home I thought this was a great Idea, to make a cd with a bunch of tracks with music the matters to you, or at least something you listen to a lot. since Headcase is pretty small I think we here can do something like this but for ourselves to exchange to other members here. We all know each others Internet personality and each others gear we use..but we don't know…

Thought I'd start this thread, seeing as I'm listening to Sky Cries Mary right now. Check 'em out. Well, can't have this thread without mentioning Porcupine Tree, so I'll mention them: Porcupine Tree -- so there, I mentioned them. If you like this type of music and you haven't heard them, you should at least check them out. No, seriously, they've recently been remastering a lot of their back catalog, and the impossible to get Lightbulb Sun should be coming up soon. Stars Die (the compilation) is a good place to start. Warning: multiple versions of practically all their albums exist, so do your homework first -- decide, for example, beforehand, whether or not …

So, I figured my first post should be in the music forum, since that is what interests me the most, and I was disappointed that there is only one thread. Oh well, perhaps once we get more people in here, that'll change. So, what dark music (metal, goth, industrial, noise, experimental, etc.) have you been listening to lately? I'm really enjoying the new Android Lust release, Devour, Rise, and Take Flight. Technically in the goth/industrial vein, but not really sticking with any one genre. This is more of a ensemble sounding release than The Dividing -- the drums, in particular, sound more live than usual. It also goes off on some seriously weird tangents (which, to …

See this article [NYTimes] for information on early 'pop' music. Much is available from UCSB. FOR a couple of months now my iPod has been stuck on Stella Mayhew's "I'm Looking for Something to Eat." It's a lurching little waltz-time pop tune, drawled over brass-band accompaniment. The lyric is hilarious, the lament of a gal on a diet who can't stop eating, and it climaxes with a glutton's soul cry: "I want some radishes and olives, speckled trout and cantaloupe and cauliflower/ Some mutton broth and deviled crabs and clams and Irish stew." I can't get it out of my head ? so far, it's my favorite record of 2006. As it happens, it's also my favorite record of 1909.…

  19. Ok, the music forum needs help! I thought we could make a thread for the female vocal fans, something that could be bumped with new stuff as time goes on. To keep this easy on the eyes and those who are looking to find some new female vocal music let's limit the number of artists/bands that you recommend to a total of 5. I'll set up a format that can be pasted so we have a bit more than a list of names and albums. Artist: Album: File Under: Recommended For Fans Of: Artist Website: Sample Listen: Music Best For: Reviews: My Thoughts: Artist: Splashdown (aka Melissa Kaplan) yes some of you know my love for her voice from another forum Al…

It's downtempo/electronica/trip-hop stuff. A lot of music off the Podsafe music network and a lot of stuff from CDBaby (indie artists) So what's on your 'Pod?

So who do you think is the most skilled shredder out there? I'd say it's a toss up between Jason Becker, Michael Angelo Batio, and Ron Thal. On a side note, has anybody noticed that the faster they get the more it sounds like crap?
