OK I didn't know that. I guess Firefox is not? That may explain why my mom always has a bunch of shit Malware on her Mac whenever I see her. I forced her to start using Chrome so that is probably a good start. I guess I actually want to use a VM, not a sanboxed browser. It seems a bit more secure.

I sometimes find myself searching website that may have malware, etc (not porn, for example, I was just searching about viruses because of a problem with my dad's computer). Given the increasing amount of malware out there, I thought it might be useful to be browsing in a virtual machine. Is parallels still good or is there something better out there. For a related question, is there a way to sandbox a single browser?

Yeah, it is a 32-bit. I don't think he will mind though. He doesn't use it for much. I'm guessing he would not have a good time with the drivers. I wish I were still there to do this. It wasn't quarantined. There were no threats at all. When I ran it (AVG) a second time, it came up with the same problem. F-Secure is another anti-virus program. My dad says that he has never seen it on the computer (although some part may be left from when my brother had the computer).

I am very interested in ESET and have looked up a lot of information on them (especially since they are a light resource option). The people who use it seem to love it. The only thing that keeps me from going that way is that it did poorly at av-test. Can one run "Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool 2015" another anti-virus program installed/running or will that cause problems? The virus removal tool doesn't get installed. It says that it shouldn't be your only anti-virus suite so I thought it may be ok. Edit: Nevermind, it says it is compatible here. http://www.kaspersky.com/free-tools

By the way, if I just tell my dad to delete the file with the "malicious code" "c:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Avg2015\temp\avg-74fae816-07d4-4657-9215-dell23653425.tmp," will truly horrible things happen (it is in the Windows\System32\config folder after all)? Do you think this will disappear if AVG is properly uninstalled? Maybe it really isn't a problem. I don't know why AVG (or F-Secure according to the top of the pop up window), is saying it has malicious code but then isn't removing it nor is it saying it is a threat. The strange thing is that it seems to have to do with AVG. I don't know why it is saying F-Secure... maybe my dad used to have F-Secure (or still has it), and it is popping a warning when AVG runs.

Has anyone tried Kaspersky or know of a reason why I shouldn't but this for my dad (I could also use it on my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 since you can use it on 3 computers)? I'm wondering how resource heavy it really is. It seems to be great in every other way*. *Except that some people claim that the program is used to mine data for the Russians based on Kaspersky's connection with the KGB in the past. I'm guessing that this is not the case. It does give me second thoughts though.

Bitdefender free or paid? I seen some places where the free doesn't catch add much. I don't understand why though?

Thanks, that might be useful. I'm not sure my dad could download and my it on a disk to install but it may be useful to know if I can't come up with something else. Seems like ESET is faster but Kaspersky is a little better performance wise. Since my dad's computer is old, I guess he probably shouldn't use Kaspersky...

I'm wondering if I should buy Kaspersky for him. It seems to always have good reviews. Perhaps I should buy him a copy of Windows 8.1 and have the disk sent to his house. I don't know if he'd have the patience to start from scratch. Does anyone know about the free Kaspersky Virus removal tool?

I would have done a clean install (once I saw the malicious code popup) but didn't have a copy of Windows 7 to do it with. I'm leaving this morning so I have to be able to tell him what to do unfortunately.

My dad is using AVG and it seems that he may need a better Antivirus program. (As mentioned in my thread of "Windows 7 problems" he has some malicious code that AVG or F-secure tells him about but doesn't remove and I'm concerned about it.) Mister X mentioned Bitdefender. Does anyone know about this? It does seem to have better ratings than AVG.

Has anyone else used Bitdefender. I haven't heard much about them.
