  1. I saw Band of Horses two nights ago at the 9:30 Club in DC. It was meh. I mean the band was tight, and they sounded well enough. But they didn't do anything new, at all. Basically played the album note for note. I usually like it when a band tries a different spin on their old materials in a live set.
  2. If you are trying out the Bernstein set, just remember he did two cycles: one in the 70s with the NY Philharmonic and one in the 80s with the Vienna Philharmonic. And then there's a boxset that supposedly includes the best of the two orchestras. Personally I like the 70s set the best, although the 80s set has slightly better sound quality due to technological advances.
  3. The sound quality is fucking amazing on the SFS set: it's recorded natively in DSD, so it really shows off the SACD format. Performance-wise, it's pretty decent, but lower in overall quality than the Bernstein set.
  4. Nothing needs to be said about this album that hasn't already been said. It is the album that got me into jazz in the first place. This album just makes sense to me in a way that I cannot explain. To me, this is Pink Floyd's crowning achievement: sublime and tragic at the same time. A rumination on life and death that speaks tremendously to me. To me, the Sixth Symphony captures the entirety of the human condition A perfectly weird record that is moving at the same time. The most intensely personal album that somehow resonates universally To me, this album represents everything good about hip hop: gritty subject matter described in cinematic realism, mixed with technical virtuosity, and judicious use of sampling.
  5. This review would sound so much better in jive: "Review of: Cary CD 360 Downstream components: I called tha president of Cary in Boulda, CO n found out he is a swiznell homey wit a bootylicious philosophy on blingin' fantastic audio gizzle n cd players. We hung out n had coffee n he shared wit me his philosophy. Fizzy Pres of Cary: "Basically: I makes audio cd playa fo` thugz who love music. I Don't use any trickery or craziness in mah CDP. Hizzle in Shot Calla this is how we do th'n, vizzle good work n tizzy we go skiing". F-R-to-tha-izzom tha first nizzle I kizzy tha CD 360 was a revelation. It has a bold, R-to-tha-izzich sound like a hot cup of french roast on a coo` fall day in Boulda, CO. SACDs were even better. Awesomely enough tha Cary CD 360 has a digital input so I can run an optical out F-R-to-tha-izzom mah MacBook iPro n listen ta MP3s via iTunes. I had downloaded tha new Modest Mizouse album n it sounded amaz'n, lilke poser of goodness like I was see'n intotha music. I put on a cd of "bang bizzle maxwwell single hammer" n it was like I was hear'n tha Beatles fo` thefirst ime. The timpanis were crizzisp n clear but not overly bright. The drizzay kicks were very intense n meaty, full. I heartily recommend this drug deala ta anyone who wants ta stizzop listen'n ta they gear, n start spendin' ta they music again. Its like I was 13 listen'n ta tha beatles fo` tha first time fo all my homies in the pen." Courtesty of Gizoogle

    What's DCD?
  7. The next Radiohead album. Can't think of anything else this year.
  8. Going to see Freddy Cole and his trio play at the Blues Alley in DC tomorrow. In case you don't know, he's Nat King Cole's brother.
  9. Seeing it tonight
  10. No, it's Cincinnati All kidding aside David, if your landlady is really THAT anal about her electricity bill, just tell her that you are willing to contribute some of your own money.

From postjack's original message:http://www.head-case.org/index.php/topic,1641.msg39800.html#msg39800 "i know what is in there. amplifying stuff. basically what it does is you plug the signal from your source (ipod, x-fi, etc) into the amp, and it makes the shit louder G~~~, ya heard. then you plug in your headphones, and the sound is like boom, like a sub on your head. fuk loud as hell yall, damn." Gizoogle-translated version: "i kizzle whizzat is in there. mobbin' stuff. basically whiznat it does is you pliznug tha signal F-R-to-tha-izzom yo source (ipod, x-fi, etc) into tha amp, n it makes tha shiznit louda G~~~, ya heard. thizzen you plizzug in yo heezeephones, n tha sound is like boom, like a sub on yo heezee. fuk loud as hizzle yall, dizzy." www.gizoogle.com It's like postjack started a website that translated everything into jive
  14. Personally I never did hear the benefits of an active-ground configuration, having heard both the Corda Opera and the M3. After all, why go pseudo-balanced when you can go full-balanced? If you are at this level of performance, might as well go all the way.
  15. Yeah, you don't need more than 4 channels for what you are doing. However, if you want to run your single-ended headphones in an active ground configuration, you would still need the 6-channels. It's up to you though: some say that the 3-channel configuration for single-ended usage brings it closer to true-balanced.
  16. What kind of assholes are you renting from dude? I rent in Berkeley too, and no one ever gave me shit about my rig, and it's a lot more unsightly than yours lol Just explain to your landlord that it's none of his/her fucking business since they are not the ones to pay the electricity bill.
  17. Damn you and your quicker reply!
  18. From what I understand, the 6-channel B22 is to enable two single-ended headphones to run in a 3-channel configuration simultaneously, otherwise when a balanced headphone is connected the other 2 channels are not used. I am not entirely sure this is correct, but this is what I got.
  19. I have to say this movie really moved me, was kinda choked up during the final scenes.
  20. I contacted my local dealer via email, but no replies, at all, which makes me hesitate to do business with them. Also, I've been trying to hold out for an used pair, but those never show up, or at least none that I have seen anywhere, not on eBay, A-gon, or Craigslist
  21. And I'm still trying to get the Quad 12L active monitors to no avail
  22. That's interesting, I didn't know Adam monitors have ribbon tweeters.
  23. That's hardly a fair comparison I agree that SACD is not necessary, but it sure is a bonus if done right. And it also depends on what one listens to. If one listens to a lot of jazz and/or classical, then the SACD format is really nice, since there is a pretty large catalog, and some of the modern DSD-direct classical recordings sound phenomenal.
  24. Has anyone seen this headphone amp: http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=AURAUD I couldn't find the website for the manufacturer, and Head-Fi has very little information.
  25. Old thread, but I was listening to Rage Against The Machine's first album, and I realized that it would make a perfect torture disc for audiophile systems. The recording quality, I think, is actually very good for rock, and the album has a ton of huge dynamic swings and heavy basslines. Most systems I've heard run out of juice quick when you turn it up and start to rock out.
