  1. Ah, that explains the theme change then. No serious damage I hope.
  2. I cannot offer much in terms of recommendations as I've found myself in a similar situation with little idea of which CDs or performances to get. I've tended to occasionally stumble across the odd stunning piece of classical music by accident and do what I can to track down the source to get my own copy of the same performance. I guess what I'm saying is that I can see a lot of benefit in the project you envisage. I'm happy to try and contribute the little I can and will certainly be keeping a good eye on this thread. To help kick things off, one that I have been getting some enjoyment out of is the Living Stereo SACD of Beethoven Sonatas played by the late Arthur Rubenstein. See the Amazon link for details below, this is the version of the disc I have. 3. I find that happens a lot with external FAT32 drives. Many people format external drives and USB sticks as FAT32 as it handles drive ejection better than NTFS. The problem is that FAT32 doesn't support files larger than 4GB but MacOS X will still attempt to copy the file across anyway and fail at the 4GB limit with a cryptic error message that implies an internal OS X problem. Windows handles it a bit better by failing before doing the copy but the error message it gives makes you think the drive is full even if there's apparently more than enough space. This shouldn't be a problem with NTFS but yeah, if the drive is only ever going to be used with Macs then HFS+ is the way to go.
  4. Yes, that will work fine. OS X can read from NTFS no problem.
  5. I've always found it completely reliable myself, I use it much the same way you do, but I do understand your concern given that it's reverse engineered and beta software. Certainly if it wrote the wrong byte to the wrong place there is potential it could corrupt the drive. If writing and complete reliability are important I'd second the call to reformat the drive.
  6. Out of the box MacOS X can read and write to FAT32 formatted drives but can only read from NTFS ones. If you just want to read from the disc then that won't be a problem. If you really need to write too you can still do so but you will need to install the MacFuse userspace filesystem kernel module and the NTFS-3G driver. I use these myself and they work great.
  7. Agreed, Animals is definitely my favorite. Oh, and I just remembered I have more cassettes too. Most I had were vinyl rips but I do have a few genuine duplicates. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (Cassette and CD) Dire Straits - Communique (I have this on cassette as well as the aforementioned CD and vinyl) Dire Straits - On Every Street (cassette and CD)
  8. This is off the top of my head... Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (Vinyl & CD) Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out (Vinyl & CD) Superjesus - Sumo (CD & Special Edition CD with bonus disc) Superjesus - Jet Age (CD & Special Edition CD with bonus disc) Pink Floyd - The Wall (Vinyl & CD) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Vinyl & CD) Pink Floyd - Meddle (Vinyl & CD) Amaral - Estrella de Mar (CD & Limited Edition CD with bonus tracks) The B-52s - Wild Planet (Vinyl & CD) The B-52s - The B52's (Vinyl & CD) Betty Boo - Boomania (Vinyl & CD) Dire Straits - Dire Straits (Vinyl & CD) Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms (Vinyl & CD) Dire Straits - Love Over Gold (Vinyl & CD) Dire Straits - Communique (Vinyl & CD) Genesis - Genesis (Vinyl & CD) The Knife - Silent Shout (CD & Special Edition with bonus disc) Travelling Wilburys (Cassette & Special Edition CD) Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (CD & SACD Limited Edition with bonus disc)
  9. I'd agree with that. I like head-fi, I'm not banned there and don't have any especial intention to get banned. I do though have a much higher degree of trust in information posted here than there. I also think Head-case is more conducive to showing both sides whereas on HF if a mod opposes your view then you might as well just give up.
  10. Yesterday Aerius started the "Impressions: Dream CD Players" thread. A very informative and interesting read talking about genuinely good equipment and containing detailed and well reasoned impressions. T.rose of course started the infamous "for sale" threads listing items not especially well regarded and doing his usual hyperbole and grandstanding. It seems to me that your concept evaluating the value of posters is somewhat flawed to say the least. To much time spent in a moderation mindset evaluating posters by how insulting their comments are perhaps? This is definitely not a forum for those with thin skin but I don't see any problem with that, the signal to noise ratio is very good. There's more than one way to run a forum and I fail to see how running a place like this in the way you are implying would make things here any better. I'd suggest it's quite the opposite in fact.
  11. That is the way I read it. Players of this level do seem a bit out of my price range too but the suggestion of buying second hand make it much more achievable. From the description the Andromeda would seem to really be my kind of player.
  12. I think it's the opposite actually. On the school yard kids can make wild and provocative statements and then run to the teachers for protection. It doesn't matter who's right, who's wrong and who started it. The teachers tell off all involved and if they don't like you you'll be suspended or expelled. Even in more normal circumstances teachers will tell you what's appropriate and what's not and instruct you to tuck your shirt in if it takes their fancy. Teachers do get a hard time at school of course, much like being a mod at head-fi I'm sure. The thing is, people grow up, mature and leave school. When people mature you expect a certain degree of life experience and for them to know how to behave. If people act like idiots then they will be told as such. As far as t.rose goes, I'd like to draw your attention to an earlier post he made describing how he wished we were all at school and he could stuff some of us in out lockers. Rather ironic given your analogy.

Heh, that video was nicely done.
  14. Honestly I suspect an iMod sounds pretty decent. I think Vinnie knows what he's doing. That said, I'd personally be more inclined to put that money into good CD player instead.
  15. Wait what? You're comparing Head-case to a country under military control where the people who live there have little say in the laws governing the place? That description sounds more like another forum I could name.
  16. Haha oh wow. This thread wins. Nice wordfilter too.
  17. Looking at other graphs, the 5.5G models have their own problems in other ways, but yes I see much profit potential selling 5.5G models to those wanting the superior iMods and V-docks. As far as the 6G goes, I hope a firmware update can help out although I wouldn't hold my breath. I like Apple but responding to consumer complaints has never been one of their strengths.
  18. Mac OS X is also one of the few Operating Systems that seems to get faster with each release. Been playing with a Leopard build recently and programs start a lot quicker and Finder is noticeably speedier. I'd second the comments on OS/2 and BeOS too. I'd also add Amiga Workbench to the list. Ah, pervasive multitasking and light weight multithreading...bliss!
  19. That's very true in my experience, I think it comes down to usage. Some of them seem quite reliable for basic use, internet, email, etc but start falling over if you transfer a lot of large files over a LAN, use unusual protocols or heavy wifi encryption. I used to own a US Robotics 9105 which crashed twice a day and today run a DLink DGL-4300 which is rock solid with whatever I throw at it.
  20. Only one of two he owns it seems, he's still keeping an 80GB one and swearing off the 6G iPod. He seems completely sure the iMods sound better than the 6G iPod despite little solid evidence on the matter. So far the only person who has heard both and said the iMod + V-dock is better is Vinnie himself. I'm not questioning Vinnie's honesty in the matter, he admits to being biased but gave what seems to be a fair comparison. Not a good look though. Of course given the price and loss of portability you'd hope the iMod + V-Dock would sound better, it'd be some pretty shabby pixie dust if it didn't.
  21. You can use Peer Guardian for ad blocking purposes although it's not really what it's designed for. It does have many ad servers in it's default block list though.
  22. Yeah, my guess is that he's just not near a computer at the moment. I expect he will let his despair at this turn of events be known widely in due time.
  23. Yes, I've not seen any comments from asshat extraordinaire since Vinnie posted his findings as of yet. Yesterday he was getting pretty hyped up about the thought of an iModded 160GB Classic and seemed to assume it was just a simple inevitability and that he'd be first in line. I replied to him commenting that I hoped Apple had done a better job with the Classic and that the iMod was redundant although I hadn't expected there'd turn out to be so much truth to it. Must come as quite a blow to him.
  24. My 160GB iPod Classic arrive yesterday and I'm impressed. It sounds better than I had expected and it appears according to Vinnie it's not worth iModding (It must kill him to say that) http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=259258. I really wish I had heard a 5.5G model to compare but based on what's being said, the Classic should in theory sound better than a stock 5.5G model. It certainly sounds very good for a portable device.
  25. I've never heard one myself but Yamamoto have a good reputation. It doesn't have 6SN7s so it's not just your typical generic 300B amp, from what I can see of they have actually tried to make something that sounds good. I'd love a listen but I doubt one will end up in my part of the world.
