  1. Here's the picture. This is next gen dry hump technology right here.
  2. What about the HE6? Don't people like powerful tube amps for them? That was my inclination for them. And what about the Liquid Fire? Seems to be a good match for the Audeze from what I've read. (spare me the KG propaganda please)
  3. I think the only difference is the price which makes people pickier, expect more, and keeps the sales down. From everything I've seen it looks like they just transferred the same LCD-2 issues over to the LCD-3's thinner diaphragm or whatever it is. Oh, and great write-up Marv. Gives me a pretty good picture of the LCD-3. I'm waiting for the smaller driver portable with yamaha style driver...
  4. I like the un-censorded verion of Gurubhai !
  5. I know people (not people with "crap hearing" ) who have heard the resonance on the Apex Peak and Gilmore amps among others. I heard them at a meet on the Apex but it was too loud to hear much more than "bass- check!, mirange- check!, treble- check!"
  6. The resonance in the LCD-2 seems to vary in severity between units, but it's not power or amp related. I heard terrible resonance/reverb (and might have heard veil too if the reverb hadn't kept me from listening to them) in my LCD-2 and yet have heard nothing like that in any other orthos, not even the 1979 Fostex T50, which has a driver of similar construction and similar size to the LCD-2, and yet is much harder to drive. I've heard a lot of orthos on this gear and never heard anything like that resonance/reverb except when experimenting with damping schemes and enclosures that did not work or were not ideal. I didn't even hear anything like that when I plugged the HE6 prototype (harder to drive than the production HE6) directly into an ipod. It's coming from the driver, pads, damping or enclosure. Unless you think the LCD-2 has amp requirements that are unique among planar magnetics?
  7. I don't know if the TP mod makes a time/weather changing difference or not, I thought it was significant. But in general, changing damping materials in an ortho can definitely take them from bad to good, or even...fantabulous. The LCD-3 was already damped at least decently, but some of the vintage orthos have little or none.
  8. yeah, and it's not even gourmet TP. Even on toiletpaper-fi Kirkland signature would be frowned upon.
  9. Are you the deuche who attacked someone with their 6th post?
  10. Bob has them now. Will be interesting to see what he thinks comparing to the Rev2. No one seems to want to hear them with TP. I swear to them that it is clean TP, never touched my heiny and I even offer a screw driver and instructions on how to do it. But I think since it's a limited audition people are wanting to hear them stock so they have a reference point to other's impressions.
  11. I'm in Palo Alto. But that's fine, they're going on to the next person.
  12. Judging an amp's sound by a list of parts. Interesting...
  13. Yeppers. Are they low because the amps had just been released? Or maybe i think theres more headphone obsessed freaks than there really are.
  14. How did you all get these figures on number of units sold? Are they really that low? I thought the market was bigger than that.
  15. The "apologists" comment was in reference to what Deepak said about masking crappy digital sources, it wasn't an insult to you analytical listeners I wasn't talking about Kevin. To be clear again, I have no problem with him or his amps (not that he would care if I did), there's a difference between a crap amp and an amp that doesn't line up with my preferences and I'm saying the latter. I've enjoyed my limited time with the BHSE. The only reason I brought up my impression of the Gilmore dynamics I've heard was to counter the perfect sine wave circle jerk that seems to be happening here and share an impression that does not match the one that's being shoved down everyone's throats. I do not think the Gilmore amps are the ideal that everyone should strive for. And I do not think they are neutral. And I prefer my much cheaper Cavalli amp. I don't think it's evil either. I don't know Cavalli, maybe Spritz is right, but I still think this is premature and is turning into a witch hunt. Also, NoNoNoNoNoNo isn't a psychopath that's absurd. If you met him in person you'd probably have a great time. edit: I wasn't planning on writing a thesis here, maybe I ought to just let you guys have your bar fun? I'm happy to do so I've got good headphones waiting for me...
  16. The crap taste comment is just pathetic. Do you really think you and Kevin are the only intelligent people in headphone-dom? Cavalli has not only designed a whole line up of amps, he's given them away for free. Excuse me, but where's the Spritzer line of amps? At worst NoNoNoNoNoNo is a fanboy who likes being at the center of something new and exciting. You may disapprove but that's neither illegal nor immoral. The real crime here isn't anything Cavalli has done, but what you're doing right now- you're the one with an agenda. Someone expresses an opinion that goes against what you want people to think and you start trashing them. It's straight propaganda and it's pretty clear that's what you're doing to Cavalli. He's the competition to your beloved Gilmore, so you've got to get all your little minions to hate his amps. It makes me sick that so few people here seem to be able to stand up to this hateful bullshit.
  17. I hear the reverb/echo in the LCD-3 as well, but it's a lot quieter and less noticeable. It took me a few days to acknowledge that I heard it (I think it was bubbling up with me the whole time) whereas it's one of the first things I noticed about the LCD-2rev1 right after putting them on. It's more noticeable at higher listening volumes with the LCD-3 for some reason. Actually, I've thought lately that a lot of colorations are more noticeable at slightly higher than normal listening levels. The LCD-3 kind of falls apart when you crank it up IME. I haven't tried it on that many amps yet, but since it's the same as what I heard on the LCD-2, which I did try on many amps, I'm not going to point fingers upstream. Still a definite improvement over the LCD-2 rev1 I had for a while- I see it as a much better version of the same headphone. Faster, cleaner, more linear. It is a really easy headphone to listen to. It's not perfect, but it's a big relief to listen to a headphone where nothing in the upper mids or treble is sticking out sharply. The downside to this is that they lost some air and clarity in the process. (not compared to the LCD-2 but compared to something like an HD800 which has the opposite problem)
  18. That impression has been formed after numerous auditions at meets with high end sources (I've heard the GS1 a number of times at meets setup as end game rigs by trusted head-fiers back in the day) and from having the G lite in my home a few times. I currently have a Gamma2 which you can laugh at, but it doesn't change my impression of the Gilmore amps. Again, I'm not saying they are bad but I wanted to express the fact that some people like Cavalli's amps more than Gilmore's despite whatever numbers and BS propaganda is thrown around. You can say I have crap ears, but that hasn't been my experience. I'd love to change my mind though, this has inspired me to have a more thorough shootout with CEE TEE between his Glite and my SOHA. The GS1 was my second favorite amp with my HP3000 because the HP3000 was overly lush. The only amp I liked better was a PPA because it had a very analytical opamp installed that had even better synergy with the HP3k. Can't remember the name of the opamp, but anyone who's built one would know (AD85...?). My point is that the HP3k were colored and needed an opposite colored amp to bring them back from the dark side. Your description of the EHHA does not match my impression. The good one (BK8569er's) I heard was fast, linear and detailed and if anything lacked impact. I think the apologists would call the Gilmore amps "revealing".
  19. Spritzer as far as I can tell what you're doing here is far more questionable than anything I've seen from Cavalli or anyone who knows him. As far as SQ goes, I'd take any Cavalli amp over any Gilmore amp any day. (dynamics, I haven't compared the stat amps much) Heck, I'd take my SOHA1 over a Gilmore GS1. They're not bad amps, but every Gilmore I've heard sounded sterile and cold and the only time they've sounded listenable was with incredibly lush headphones. And at the same time, I don't need to trash the guy behind the amp. I can have respect for Kevin Gilmore, which I do, and personally dislike his amps. That doesn't seem to be the case with some people here for whatever reason. I guess it's cool on head-case to talk trash. Also I must say that I have a lot of trust and respect for Don. I think he's one of the rare people here who makes headphones into what I would actually consider a hobby. I don't think this is a hobby for most people here because buying stuff isn't a hobby it's just buying stuff. But it is a hobby for someone like Don. He's spent a lot of time fixing up vintage orthos for people for nothing more than to know there is another functioning ortho in the world.
  20. I listened to a SOHA1 and Gilmore Lite with another head-fier the other day with the LCD-3 and while both amps sounded good, we preferred the SOHA1. It was just a brief listening session so should be taken with a grain of salt, but I can't help but be pretty skeptical about these fairly extreme statements and accusations being made.
  21. What makes a number of you think the Liquid Fire or more importantly for me since I own one, the EHHA is poorly designed? I'm not an engineer or DIY'er, so caveman language would be great for me personally... I'm not so hot on my EHHA, but I heard someone else's EHHA and thought it sounded pretty darn good and I really like my SOHA1 at least in terms of price/performance. Not sure what's up with my EHHA, it sounds worse than my SOHA. I assumed is was more to do with this specific build, but maybe that is part of the problem you're referring to.
  22. Going to Particleman on Sunday.
