  1. The last image that I saw didn't even have cables... (..or any attempt at white balance.)
  2. The "I registered to shill this" update, probably. (Looks like heavier mesh on the outside, and painted black? Now they look a touch more Abyss/S&M and a bit less like SR-007s)
  3. Dear old Schiit's Eitr is a surprisingly solid option for USB-S/PDIF on a budget. It's basic, but seems to have decent clocks and does a good job of isolating from an electrically noisy host. Certainly if people don't want to spring for a really expensive D2D box, it's a much safer option than hitting AliExpress to buy something equipped with "Talema Sealed Cattle".
  4. ..and yes, Jake's story is heartbreaking. At least he won't have to suffer any more. I hope his family find some peace in that eventually.
  5. John Perry Barlow, of EFF fame. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/02/john-perry-barlow-internet-pioneer-1947-2018
  6. Oh, it's nice to come across someone else who enjoys some Cinematic Orchestra - glad you got a kick out of it too.
  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID9lYh_uUVs (..not sure how to embed, and the editing widget became haunted.)
  8. The other possibility, if it's one of the huge number of labels owned by UMG, is that you're hearing watermarks, which they insert into content for streaming services: https://www.mattmontag.com/music/universals-audible-watermark (Do not click this if you hate not being able to unhear bad things, it can drive you nuts.)
  9. OK, be gentle- potentially idiotic question ahead. Please don't be offended- I have the people skills of a medium-sized shoebox. Hey, @spritzer - I understand that the lighting was really difficult and unflattering, but is the case on this intriguing little amp actually as wonky as it looks? It looks like the top plate is a bit short, and the bottom one overhangs a bit: While I'm sure it wouldn't harm the performance of the unit at all, it is tweaking my slightly obsessive nature. (Also, on a more useful note, I assume it'd be fine with L500 and L700? Are there any pro-bias Stax, esp current production, that you wouldn't use with it?)
  10. Presumably, they're called King Sound because they make people clutch their heads and complain about the awful 'king sound?
  11. Well, because I am credulous and vulnerable to hype trains (and have been peeping pictures of the drivers) I find myself wanting some L300-LE. Any thoughts about the best way to snag a pair in the UK when available? If it's just a case of telling a friendly dealer to keep an eye out, that's fine- but if there's a better way, I'm mostly ears.
  12. Doesn't "professional" from Focal normally denote that they're more expensive, more ugly and come with different cables? Looking, that does seem to be the case with the Listen: Normal: 4.60ft (1.4m) OFC cable with built-in remote and omnidirectional microphone Airplane adaptor "Professional": 16ft (5m) coiled OFC cable 4.5ft (1.4m) OFC cable with remote control and omnidirectional mic 3.5mm stereo jack socket to 6.35mm stereo jack plug It's weird that the 5m curly cable seems to be 3.5mm terminated. Wouldn't 6.35mm make more sense with the long stretchy cable, just for mechanical stability? The deal appears to be similar with the Clear: 1 x 1.2m with 3.5mm stereo jack for connection to audiophile portable devices 1 x 3m with 6.35mm stereo jack connector 1 x 3m with XLR 4 pin symmetrical connector and the Clear pro: A 5m spiral for domestic use A 1.2m cable fitted with a 3.5mm stereo jack connector 3.5mm and 6.35mm jack adapter ..though here the long curly cable at least terminates with a 6.35mm plug.
  13. RIP Mark E. Smith, the crazy fucker.
  14. It's probably more if you go on there as a company and make a thread that goes "HAI GUYS LOOK AT OUR WARES" . That may trigger Jude's advertising revenue spider sense. People who don't want to pay are supposed to at least pay basic attention to sockpuppet 101 and make an astroturfing thread.
  15. Am I a cynic, or is the Perun shilling starting to get slightly oppressive? I'm pretty sure that anyone with more than half a brain wouldn't send off a wad of money to Russia, especially having not heard them. It's enough to make you appreciate actual dealer networks. The hyperbole in the shilling reduces trust, rather than increasing it, incidentally.
  16. But I talked to Dan, and he said... This one time, at band camp, Dan said... etc. etc. It's impossible to critique Mr Speakers headphones online without people gushing about "Dan" as though he's a close personal friend and occasional sexual partner. It's all a bit odd.
  17. Stubbornly and bewilderingly low-fi production style but for some reason, it sounds wonderful on my poor little Stax rig. Colour me shocked. Shit be unfolding, yea verily.
  18. Yeah, I have been wading back through the thread, but there's a lot of it, and I'm a bear of very little brain. After a while, the plot might have been lost. Possibly. I did come across posts where people were enthusing about the 507, but clearly didn't get to the bit where you found them to be eartweeters. That's no good- not a fan of glare. Neutral is fine/ideal. I have a secret fondness for a bit of warmth, but will deny that if captured. Once I have a better idea of folks' sonic preferences, it will make it easier to unpack why they love or hate specific signatures. Meanwhile, apologies for the dumbass questions- trying to keep them to a minimum.
  19. Because they hurt your.. amply-proportioned cranium, or due to the sound sig?
  20. This is why the world needs an evil hive mind AI, to which we can ask questions like "does SR-507 or SR-L500 sound "better"? what are the differences?" - because answering that stuff all the time must be tiring. (Actually, what would the peanut gallery choose between those two and why? I am having itchy upgradeitis, sadly. The slightly thin bass and upper-mid shout of the 303 is EQable to a degree, but that limits my source options.)
  21. Ah, this is why daft questions are almost inevitable- there are many variants, and arcane knowledge needed to navigate them. I A/Bed the 303 with some 404 signatures (yay, another variant), and the differences weren't huge- mostly in the quantity of mid-bass (when the 303s had just arrived, and still had knackered pads). That was a hurried listen, in non-ideal conditions using a WM1A as a source, but still.. Anyway, noted, thank you!
  22. That sounds quite close to sidegrade for most purposes, at least- thanks. Out of interest, what was the tinkering, and the effect? (The 303s came with crumbling foam centres which I replaced with the current production equivalents- which are a sort of fabric mesh.)
  23. A quick cheapskate question.. Would a theoretical cheapskate with a 3030 system (in which the 303s have fresh pads and sound OK) notice any real benefit from grabbing a pair of L300, or would it be a pointless sidegrade? I can't find any reliable detailed writeups of the L300, just the usual HF nonsense.
