  1. The last time I tried to date someone, I ended up getting my ass handed to me and it took at least several months to get back up from zero. When I get emotionally invested in things, I get kind of obsessive. ... and back to your regularly scheduled Stax thread. Edit: Thanks, Duggeh, would you say the last version is best?
  2. Right, but what about the Floats themselves? I thought there were two versions of those as well.
  3. Jecklin Electrostatic Float headphones + PS2 Energizer - eBay (item 280310213673 end time Feb-11-09 07:44:46 PST)
  4. It ain't too hard to guess. I won the Jecklin electrostats on Ebay, hopefully the MkII version, which are the closest thing I will ever get to a Sigma or K1000... which is, to say, not very. Edit: Btw, currently I'm using my old dead T40 pads on my ESP10. Comfort is much improved since my ears barely don't touch the metal anymore. Presentation of sound is quite different from the SR-5 pads.
  5. Yeah, the Fostex pads are pretty good. They just don't fit what I have. And are quite hard to obtain, apparently. I just bought myself a present to keep my mind off tomorrow and the fact that I honestly don't give a shit about not being in a relationship or even wanting to be in one most of the year. It's the ultimate wooer of the femmebots, with the largest production headphone driver in existence I know of run at a pretty cool 1200V. Interesting fact about me: I have been single this time of year for all years of my life to date. Based on my recent purchase, it's probably going to stay that way.
  6. F!%$ Fostex service. Also, I think all the new gen Fostex pads aren't circular and are too large to fit the ESP10. It's at least true for the Fostex T50RP pads. 60 bucks a pair is still slightly more than I want to spend. What can I say, I'm poor. I'd go for a set anyway if there was a group buy, though.
  7. Anyone know where I can get some thick sealing pads that aren't ridiculously expensive, a la Omega 2? I need them for my ESP10 and the SR-5 pads are too flat. I'm not sure if that's partly because they're probably 20 or more years old... probably.
  8. As I said before, that is one of the best combinations that I can think up for a headphone, and I wouldn't be surprised if it took down most of the 'big guns' fairly easily, especially with good amplification.
  9. Depends on if the output voltage matches for the DPS and the Elpac... Does the amp really only draw 0.3A? Edit: It also depends on if the same connectors are used.
  10. Hey guys, big news! I just found out the KSC75 sounds the same as Stax, at a fraction of a fraction of the price! What's with troy, the troll?
  11. Somewhat related. Sigmas have the biggest soundstage of any headphone short of the K1000 (I assume), so I want to see if I like it.
  12. I agree. Although I admit I prefer a slightly smaller soundstage that is more well-defined to a larger soundstage that is diffuse. I need to listen to some Sigmas sometime in my life.
  13. Walnut soundstage is what I'm most afraid of. I'm not a complete soundstage addict like Faust, though.
  14. You lucky sob... That sounds like a headphone made of complete win.
  15. The ESP10 in stock form is, as Birgir said, fairly euphonic, with some fat thick bass extending into the midrange that you don't really find with the Lambdas. There's a bit of it in the SR-5NB, and I'd say currently it's on the same level sonically as a SR-5NB as well. I think there's a recession somewhere in the upper mids/lower treble because the high treble sounds pretty good to me. It does sound tubby/cavernous, but only slightly, now that I've had the time to let them play in and also time to stretch out the headband, which helped with the closed-in tubbiness as well as comfort. It gripped my head like crazy in the beginning. My ESP10 isn't technically completely stock right now, since I removed the crappy disintegrating foam inside, and haven't had a chance to replace it. In terms of mods, I'm going to need to damp the enclosure a bit to lessen the resonances and make it sound less cavernous, and I might as well swap out the stock caps for some silver micas. If possible, I will also need to find thicker pads that seal, which will improve comfort as well as sound. Right now I'm using SR-5 pads. Is the guy coming to the meet AudioCats? Edit: Also, the ESP10 is indeed fairly heavy.
  16. In case anyone cares, apparently someone got to the 1.5s before we did, and my dad decided to completely ditch my advice for planar speakers and get a Kef iQ3.
  17. I had buzzing in my Lambda once... turned out to be some dust or other something. I never knew since I just blew on it lightly for a bit and the problem went away. I should keep it under a dustcover when not using them but I'm too cheap.
  18. I rewired the ESP10 a third time. Hopefully I have it right this time. First impressions: Sounds much better on normal bias than pro bias.
  19. Here's to hoping my SR-5 Pro kicks some ass. Still looking for a donor frame.
  20. It matches the contours of the head. Also, the back is thicker than the front to further angle the drivers.
  21. Damn, I was confused as hell when I first saw a Float (Colin's) and when I tried putting it on, I felt like an astronaut. Seriously trippy.
  22. Why don't they have SR-5 pads? Then where the hell is Audiocubes getting them from?
  23. I'd post pics but I don't have access to a camera right now. The sound seems to be getting better, as the drivers run in after not being played for who knows how long. What also helps the sound is stretching out the headband so it doesn't clamp my head into a pancake. It helps that I no longer get a headache within a few minutes of wearing them, but they still need more stretching. I just hope I'm not screwing anything up by playing them while they're possibly wired incorrectly.
  24. I think I might be dumber than I thought, which is not a surprise. The channels are still reversed. At least there isn't any distortion... everything still sounds cavernous, though.
  25. I finally figured out what I wired incorrectly. I swapped the bottom two wires, bias and R- or something. I'm definitely with you on the crappy enclosure. Everything sounds like I'm in a cave. It's even worse than a stock K340 with cotton removed. I took out the disintegrating crappy foam because every time I opened the cups up more of it broke off. I'm going to upgrade the caps later on top of redamping or whatever it is I need to do.
