Current Ranking: 1. Jecklin Float Electrostatic 2. Stax Lambda/Lambda Pro 3. My 10 or so other headphones Expected Ranking after I get around to some modding and finding an SR-3/5: 1. Jecklin Float Electrostatic 2. SR-3/5 Pro 3. Stax Lambda/Lambda Pro 4. Koss ESP10 5. My 8 or so other headphones I wonder how the Philips electrets I'm going to be getting will sound. Not promising, given that there are probably transformers in the cups but at least they look cool.

Mmm, old Audio Technica woodies are pretty good looking. I just bought a Jecklin Float Electrostatic, go figure.

What's with a lot of the newer high end headphones being so... ugly? I'm not just saying the PS/GS1000 and the HD800, but some of the newer Audio Technicas, the JVC wooden headphones look pretty ghastly, and the list probably goes on. Not that it matters when compared to the actual sound, and not like I'm qualified to judge, as an owner of a Float. I wonder how heavy the PS1000 actually is.

Any thoughts on the AKG 270P (270 Playback)??

Hey, Theo. Glad to see you here as well (assuming you are who I think you are). -
I lol'd.

Oh, when I meant inside, I just meant... around the ears. I'm going to try and make pads that come in from the back and go up almost to the front, leaving a small gap so that they don't completely seal. There shouldn't be too much to do on the inside but damp the frame a bit and couple the drivers to the frame better. The sound is growing on me. It's just very slightly bright (lower treble peak, methinks) and a bit flabby on the bottom and doesn't extend far enough into the bass, which is just due to the nature of the headphone and not the drivers themselves.
-
Do you mean unworkable from a technical standpoint or that it sounds hideous? I don't see how it would be unworkable, the back padding would have to be thicker than the front to match the head, and wrap some leather over it, stick it to the frame with double-sided tape.
-
What if I made my own sealing pads around the insides of the Float frame, Lambda-style? I need to find a better way for the drivers to be coupled to the frame than just thin foam, and maybe seal/damp some stuff. Yet more modding to be done... why can't I just buy a headphone that was made right in the first place Edit: I just got zapped. Whoops.
-
I literally just got my electrostatic Floats minutes ago. First impressions: the bass really rattles the frame, it's crazy. The treble is really sharp, for some reason... definitely too much. Also, the foams that the guy put in are pretty bad quality and the ones he glued to the insides for the back of the head are horribly stiff and glued horribly.

Happy birthday!

But the fact of the matter is you basically agree that not only is it darker than many other headphones, it is darker than your perception of neutral. Obviously your perception of it will adjust and "fill in the treble" after awhile since that's what brains do. Not trying to harp on this issue at all, I just want to get an idea if the O2 is for me. I read your previous post and wouldn't really want any headphone that is less bright than the SR-Lambda or ESP-950.
-
Wow, I'm pretty sure it's just that the amp is a pile of shit. In my experience the SR-Lambda and Lambda Pro definitely extend to the limits of my hearing, which is around 20kHz, although the Lambda does roll off faster. Also, I've found that humps in FR mask extension. For example, the O2 Mk2, from what I've read, has more midbass which covers up the low bass and makes you think it doesn't extend as far. Same thing probably applies to the boost in upper mids/lower treble of the SR-404. Edit: Actually, I thought the 313 was a decent amp, from what I've read. Strange. I use an SRM-1/Mk2.
-
That's what I was afraid of hearing. Maybe I also just enjoy hyped-up treble. I've heard the O2 MkI only once, and only for a few minutes, and only at a meet. The one thing I do remember from it besides sounding effortless is being dark. Back then I didn't really know the wonders of the electrostatic sound, since I just owned some AKGs, so I thought my impressions might have been off. What doesn't make sense to me is why even Stax themselves would make their Lambdas and whatever older discontinued models with roughly the same brightness and then make the Omega 2, their top of the line headphone, noticeably darker. Looks like I'd have to audition a pair of Omega 2 (Mk1 and/or Mk2) before buying, since it's a huge purchase for me.
-
Every little difference adds up, though, as I'm sure you know, and I like my treble lively and extended very far. I think I'm going to like the O2 Mk2, should I ever choose to buy a pair. The only problem is the issue of bass, specifically mid-bass. I don't like heavy and thick bass, especially if it's to the point of woolyness. Maybe I'll try the bluetak port mod if I do. Also, the O2 Mk2 is probably still a monster to drive. I wonder if runeight's electrostatic amp will be able to drive them decently well. I should certainly hope so.
-
Ooh nice, you bought it. Are you going to try and return the Lambda to stock (fiberglass damping) or leave it as it is?
-
I just tried searching this thread for some impressions. The Mk2 is described to have a shoutier midrange and fat midbass which covers up the low bass, but I don't see much mention of the treble. Also, I read through some of the whole MkI/MkII p/leather debacle. Hilarious!
-
>_>... ... Says the elephant. Okay, I'm happy with anyone else's opinions, who have listened to both.
-
HeadphoneAddict, how is the treble of the O2 Mk2 compared to your other stats and compared to the Mk1? Congrats on the K1000.
-
Hahaha, it looks like you're putting chrome elephant ears on your ears, backwards.
-
Problem is I'd have to sell most of my stats first. I'll wait until the Jecklin Float electrostatics come and see how things are. Things would be much easier if I didn't keep impulsively buying things and just saved up money.
-
All of a sudden I am somewhat interested in the O2 Mk2. Although the price is somewhat of a killer.
-
I played around with my AT-702 SFI 120 ohm transplants some more, removing the mesh and fibrous paper that were in front of the drivers. I did it by accident when I tried removing the weatherstrip and they came with it. I then had to make up for the increased treble by plugging up the center holes with electrical tape and half-covering all of the outer holes with weatherstrip. I still need to get to work on some decent sealing pads.
-
So did you detect any difference between the two? Putting the old dead T40 pads on the ESP10 improved comfort somewhat but killed all the bass. I put the SR-5 pads back on.
-
Will do. I was wondering if they were a good price... I guess I'll see when they get here.
