I bought Cosmogramma a few years ago and I noticed it is recorded at a deafening level. Other people seemed to have picked up on this as well.

Does anyone else think his albums are too loud? I have to turn the volume to nearly zero just to listen to the CD.

Yeah, but even more so, if that is possible. I was doing a bit more reading and I'm pretty sure he is hitting those levels on purpose... it sounds like crap on my gear. I enjoy his music, but the distortion is awful.

Digitally, you can't get louder than a brick wall.  If he's overloading the analog portion as well, that's probably an artistic decision.

You may want to peruse this thread, there are some resources mentioned sporatically.  Not on the original question, but on brickwalling in general.  Mostly, by googling "loudness wars", but I'd try asking over on the steve hoffman forum, they might actually have an answer.

While I do love me some FlyLo, the only album that I thought sounded okayish on actual recording was Until The Quiet Comes. Which is his best album, coincidentally.
