I haven't been able to test it yet, though -- not a single birthday has passed that someone hasn't wished me happy birthday.

You're not a liberal arts major, are you? And it's not a theory, it's a superstition (implying right in the name that I acknowledge there is no scientific backing to it). You know, like not hitting anyone in the back of the head with anything but your lucky shovel.
