I did some maintenance to the server today, that included some DNS changes. If you see the following in your browsers address bar: http://72.18.146.20/ then either your ISP or your computer is caching the old DNS entries. If your running Windows try opening up a command window and running ipconfig/flushdns and that should clear out any cached dns entries. If that doesn't work you may have to reboot your computer.

It seems we just lost our avatars and nothing else.

Yeah it was the just the avatars, when I did the upgrade it replaced the entire avatar folder instead of just the one file in the folder it was supposed to. I have added a couple themes and will continue to add some of the older more popuplar ones (Helios-Multi for example) when it's upgraded to support the new version of SMF.
