  1. So you spend $60 to pay someone to convert your cds to flac/mp3's and then take away the cds?
  2. Ah ok. So put it on stereo and don't turn it all the way up (maybe 2/3 of the way or so)? Will there a problem with clipping if I put it all the way up or is it set up to handle that? They say in the manual to put it all the way up ("0 dB"): "Connect a home stereo to ONE
  3. Assuming I can find my RCA to 1/8" adapter `thingy', I will hook it up to the GS-1 and WA5-LE and compare it the ECD-1. I assume that the hiss is similar to that of the Duet. I do not detect any hiss except through IEMS by the way. I am also not so sure how to get a "line out" from the ONE. The instructions say to put the output on "stereo" which is the same as the output setting for "headphones" (with volume adjustment on the computer/ONE) so won't this necessarily not be the same as a line out but the same as a headphone out. There is an "amp" option but the directions seems to claim that is only an instrument amp. I am so confused. http://support.apogeedigital.com/assets/documentation/one_usersguide.pdf Edit: Here is what it says in the manual: "Output Level - Select the operating characteristics of ONE's output in this menu: Select Stereo when ONE's output is connected to headphones, powered speakers, a mixing console or a home stereo Select Amp when ONE's output is connected to an instrument amplifier. ONE's output level is fixed (i.e. hardware and software output level controls won't change the output level) and reduced to a level better suited for instrument amplifier inputs."
  4. Got the ONE in the mail today. Very easy to setup (downloaded software off Apogee's website for Snow Leopard...). I plugged in my Klipsch X10's and ....... hisssssss - no good. There is about the same amount of hiss on the ONE on near zero volume as I get on my Ipod Classic at near maximum volume. There is still less hiss than straight out of the Macbook Pro but that doesn't say much. I guess I will probably be sending it back because I don't think I could ever listen to the JH13 on it. Also, the ONE seems kinda cheap (I feel like the button you push on top is made by Fisher Price plastic) but it is pretty cheap so I cannot complain too much. Cannot really say much about the sound quality because I actually haven't listened to it much yet.
  5. I understand, from a business perspective, that the portable amps are the way to go (especially if you can get other people to build them for you). I can still pout though. I am very happy with my GS-1 and certainly never plan on selling it (unless, perhaps, I were to replace it with a GS-X - assuming that is still an option in the future).
  6. Hence the reason I sit here silently protesting by refusing to buy a Pico amp.
  7. Has anyone actually received a new GS-X in the last two years?
  8. OK, not so bad... except for my wallet.
  9. Serious? I guess it had to happen.
  10. This is one of the reasons that I didn't get the duet. If the Apogee ONE is hissy with IEMs, it will probably be going back - I will just have to spring for a Gilmore lite + Pico DAC for the office. By the way, I just looked at the price of the Gilmore lite, it seems to be $499 now. Wasn't it just recently $399 or I am just being stupid?
  11. I finally gave up on Mac mice and got a Logitech
  12. I had $100 credit at amazon so I ordered the ONE. Hope there is not too much hiss since I plan to use it with the JH13 (or ESW9) at the office.
  13. 27" nice! Anyone been using Chrome for the last couple of days? I am about to download and try it out.
  14. What do you speak of "phone booth?"
  15. Wmcmanus: When I got my Kindle (DX), I was just planning to use it to keep all the papers I would ever need for research (in pdf format) so I would have them at my disposal wherever I might be. However, I found that the Kindle is really nice for reading actual leisure books... much better than a real book for me. I tend to read at night before I go to bed. I would always fall asleep while reading, losing my place. Now the Kindle turns itself off and remembers what page I was reading. Also, it is really nice to be able to change the font size (on Kindle books) especially as one gets older. It would be hard to go back to those old paperbacks now. I just wish I could make the font bigger on pdfs and I would be a happy (er happier) person.

There are events 4.75 miles from my house tonight and tomorrow night. Too busy to go though.
  17. Ok, sorry for picking on you Al, it's just so fun, it is hard to resist. I really shouldn't talk since I haven't finished the SOHA II I started many many months ago. I enjoyed my short time with the eXStata and HE60 (tube - didn't try the ss unfortunately) but my only experience with stats is at meets so I am not really the best person to judge.
  18. I see, assuming deepak doesn't have a secret stash, I'll have to look elsewhere.
  19. Yes, Mark FTW! The few minutes that I listened to the Raven, was sweet indeed. I am looking forward to spending more time with it in the future once it gets tweaked some more. Cordy things can be quite useful, especially if they are the right kind. For instance, suppose you decide to be perverse and put female XLR jacks on your new amp...
  20. Al, I wasn't too impressed with your balanced Bijou. I really think you should turn up the gain on it because it almost sounded as if no source was being played.
  21. asr: That is an nice list. By the way, where did you pick up the Barry Diament-mastered LZ set?
  22. mugdecoffee gets my approval. He's a good guy.
