Thanks, Al, I was being polite and trying to give complin the benefit of the doubt. He later backed off a bit and seemed nicer. But this is where newbies really need to back off and get to know the people around here a bit more before being challenging ... complin - I think Voltron knows a bit about what is permissible by law. Just as I think I know a little bit about how to describe personalities. You probably wouldn't know that, being a newb, but rather than spouting off challenging questions, maybe back off a bit, and get to know who is who around here first, eh?

Birgir is very charismatic, as well, and I had the very good fortune of meeting him in person, too! And I believe that was putrified shark meat, rather than petrified ... but I could be wrong.

No, I think Skylab is charismatic. He's also respectful, and well respected, and that's a HF thing, as well, but I think he's charismatic. Tyll is extremely charismatic, and I very much enjoy his writing and videos because of it. My ears also match much more with Tyll's ears, and so I tend to put more faith in his reviews. Heh, so ... 'antagonism'? '... a phenomenon where two or more agents in combination have an overall effect which is less than the sum of their individual effects.'

I live 10 minutes from him, have met him numerous times at local meets, and have been to his house for an afternoon of listening. He is a charismatic guy. And I also believe one can be charismatic in writing style, which I think that he is. I actually would be very interested in hearing your impressions of the Arete!

I wouldn’t agree that Skylab is untruthful in his reviews. I agree that he doesn’t have the critical ear as we do in HC, and because of it, he tends to give good reviews to gear that we don’t like. He also doesn’t have the degree of technical knowledge that many of us do, nor does he care about that level of technical knowledge. And because of that, he can gloss over technical problems in design that most of us can’t. I don’t have that technical knowledge either, but I do know that my ears don’t often agree with his. And I also know that technical design does influence sound; even if I don’t have the knowledge, I like to read about it. And I can’t pretend that poor design or bad parts don’t matter because ‘the sum is greater than the individual parts’ or ‘synergy’ or something of that sort. So I read his reviews with that in mind. But I do think he is genuinely reporting what he hears, and therefore not being untruthful, even if what he hears is in total disagreement with what we hear. Yes, I’m sure Skylab gets a rush out of the attention and validation. I just don’t think he does it to be dishonest, or to be a shill. He is also a charismatic guy, and people are drawn to that at HF. So yes, manufacturers like to have a charismatic guy with the ear and technical knowledge of a layperson report great things about their stuff online. It’s great for their business! I think it’s important that those with a more critical ear and/or more technical knowledge call him out when they hear something that he doesn’t, or when he doesn’t state important technical info. The folks at HF do also need to see the more critical stuff in their threads. There might be someone who really gets it - maybe some who is new, or someone who doesn’t mind the HF noise, but does enjoy seeing the critical and informative posts. Kudos to you folks who can stand going over there and who are even willing to post there. I don’t have the patience. But the vast majority of regular people (ie, HF) just aren’t that critical or knowledgeable, and don’t get it when someone enters such a post. Just as we don’t care for their attitude or posts here. That’s why HC is here, and why I prefer HC. J

Yeah, MobileMe once deleted two weeks of calendar events including patient appointments. It cost me hours and hours trying to figure out who had an appointment, what time slots were taken or not, amd I never did figure it all out. It was very embarrassing and I emailed Apple about it, saying MobileMe wasn't ready for prime time. I'm still wary of iCloud and won't use it to sync anything critical. I'm trying out the iPad wireless sync, and may try out the cloud music thing.

Good points ...here in Illinois, at least, you're given 30 days of insurance after the termination date with the option to purchase Cobra for one year (though most can't afford this). Also, Illinois Medicaid is available for the kids of anyone who is uninsured.

Thanks for the tip! The only time I tried it was in my pre-HC days, I was into Scotches and beers, but didn't know bourbon yet. I was hanging out with a buddy in Atlanta, chatting about liquor (what else?) and the topic turned to bourbon. He mentioned Pappy and said how awesome it was, let's go get some. We drove to his local liquor store, picked up a bottle for a bit over $100, like it was nothing, and drank a few glasses that night. I just figured you could run to your local store and pick it up whenever you wanted. I've never seen a bottle since. I'll keep my eyes wide open this fall ... Oh, and the other thing I wonder about is recycled (used?) toilet paper. I'm always wary of that ...

Yeah, we try, but the ghosts keep coming back! Actually that's the neighbor down the street that takes Halloween the most seriously every year. Our first year going out, we didn't know about them, walked right up, and my daughter literally ran screaming down the street from fear. Now we ask each of them from 3 houses away, if they want to go to the scary house? My daughter freaks out, says no, and runs away. My son says yes, gets as close as the scary clown who hovers over him, then changes his mind. Thanks! We're really happy here. It's a little bit like the stereotypical old neighborhoods from the 1950's, a great place to raise kids. We have about 5 block parties a year, most people know each other and are really friendly and polite, a ton of kids, on and on. Yes, there's the paranoid schizophrenic in the unkept house, but the kids need a house to be scared of, and to dare each other to walk up to, right? Every now and then the police surround it, because she calls them saying there's evil people trying to kill her, the police come, there's no one there, and she ends up in the psych hospital. Luckily, a psych nurse at the local hospital lives right next door, so she can handle it ok. The brick roads are a town experiment. They're way more expensive, but look nice, last longer, drain better, and are easier to repair. They ARE harder to drive fast across, so it slows down speeding drivers. If it goes well, they might do it across the whole town.

Six jumbo bags and we were cleaned out before dark. So we put up the 'out of candy' sign, turned off the lights and went into the basement to eat dinner before the scary teens came. I guess the neighborhood teens are ok, but it seems like most of the after dark teens around here are creeping in from the inner city. It's never anyone I recognize.
