  1. Very cool. When my kids get a bit older and I have time to make music again, I hope these guys are still around.
  2. My wife now insists that we get Khaaaaan plates too. Thanks for posting all these, Knucks. I bloody love this thread.
  3. I'm with Reks. My mother in-law got something similar to the Aerogarden, and she was good about maintaining it for a couple of months, and then it just went further and further to the back of her mind until the plants died, the whole thing started to smell, and she tossed it in the garage. Pots and dirt are more intuitive with regard to watering and fertilizing, and if you need to supplement the light, full-spectrum grow lights are easy to acquire.
  4. This. Check Global Auction Guide for sales and photos in your area. Be prepared to drive out of town. In general, the more remote an auction sale is, the greater likelihood that you'll be able to get a beautiful solid wood antique bedroom or dining room set for two dollars. My wife and I are slowly replacing our Ikea junk with auction sale booty, and it's amazing how cheap it is. Edit: hmmm, can't get the link to work. http://www.globalauctionguide.com/
  5. Not sure if it's the same volcano (I expect it is), but there's a neat article about Nyiragongo, whose potentially imminent eruption threatens a million people in DRC, in the most recent National Geographic. Full of great photos. I now think volcanology is the most extreme sport in the world.
  6. Study published in Science online shows Guinness tastes better in Ireland. This study is nothing without replication, obviously. Anyone want to write a funding proposal for further study?
  7. May your birthday be mighty fine, sir.
  8. Reks, I don't know where you live, but if our paths ever cross I shall buy you a beer. I have a psychiatrist mother in law who routinely diagnoses strangers with psychoses or addictions based on a few words spoken to her. I try very hard to conceal my thoughts on the matter, and it usually works. I've spent the last two days cleaning up after my toddler, who has a nasty gut infection. It looks like his three year-old brother is starting to get it too.
  9. Congrats on the job. Nothing wrong with waiting tables once in awhile. Turkish immersion sounds very cool. I'm surprised it's in Wisconsin - is there a big Turkish population there?
  10. Nice quiz Sherwood. Maybe I'll have to try these here - what did you call them - JH13s? I got a wee little bit of fuck off, presumably because I haven't wished Duggeh a happy birthday yet. Uh, happy belated, Duggeh.

Troll, methinks. Edit: seems to have been vaporized.
  12. Here's a breath of fresh air for those of us who've been pissed off by poor vinyl pressings recently: http://www.tomwaits.com/news/article/139/Tom_Waits_Rhino_Repress_Vinyl_Exchange/ I wrote Rhino a couple of years ago to complain about my bad pressing of Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know. They didn't respond. It's nice to see that Mr. Waits cares enough to raise a stink and make them notice.
  13. So many of my hippie friends need to see this.
  14. ^That is one bloody fast rooster. My brother and I used to taunt some of the meaner roosters we had growing up, and I've never seen one that could come close to outrunning a farm kid. They must be breeding them for speed these days.
  15. I like my uDac (v1). I get better sound from my various and humble CD and vinyl systems, but on the few occasions that I need a USB Dac that doesn't sound like my butt, it suits me just fine for the price I paid.
  16. Reminds me of this guy's work. He sells amazing and huge recycled-metal sculptures at the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market in Edmonton. Want some.
  17. Still way better than my permanent home in rural Manitoba.
  18. We have never had cable, and find it a lot cheaper to buy DVD sets of shows we like, though we do stay behind the times a bit with that strategy. However, a big benefit is that we have a lot more control over what and how much our kids watch. If we had the bandwidth to do computer-based TV, that might be tempting, but we live in a rather remote location with low/mid-speed wireless being the fastest option. It's frustrating enough to drive a man outside to enjoy the lack of neighbours.
