New Favorite Things
The view out my back door makes me very happy. It's even better when there are cattle visible. I suppose the view is not particularly new, but we put the house there quite recently.

What are you drinking now, pt 2.
There's just something about rye that I usually don't like - I don't think it's the lack of flavour besides alcohol; it's something else that just rubs me the wrong way. I'll have to try that CC from sherry casks if I get the chance though. They make you turn in your plaid shirt if you refuse to drink rye in the Prairie provinces after all.

I've yet to try the 10yo Cask Strength (not available in Canada) but it's on my list of must-tries next time I head south of the border. I'm in Edmonton for awhile, and there are a couple of places here where I can likely compare the 10, 15 and 18. I will report back with the results of my investigation. Currently drinking Forty Creek Barrel Select, and my wife has just called me to help her finish off her Big Rock Grasshopper wheat ale.

Do you guys like the Laphroaig 15 better than the 10? They finally started selling it in Canada again after a 5-year drought and I'm curious...

I recently found the first rye Canadian whisky that I really like: It's apparently a blend of rye, barley, and corn. It's not as good as most of the Scotches in my cupboard, but it's less than half the price and I could happily and quickly drink it all night if I weren't bloody epileptic.

AKG K400 - what's similar new?
Dude, get over yourself. If you decide to (and are allowed to) stay, you will want to lurk and read a lot before posting again, and when you post again, you will want to do so with a bit of humility. This forum is an excellent technical resource with good people, and keeping it that way requires that noobs get a sense of what it's all about before posting. If you're going to insult the established members and admins in your first few posts because they didn't tell you what you wanted to hear, I'm afraid you will be weeded out rather quickly. All the best to you.

Tyll's Beyerdynamic DT 1350 Review
- fakes
I've noticed quite a few in Winnipeg on kijiji. My impression is that they generally seem to be priced too close to the real shitty mckoy to be knockoffs, but I admit to having no retail experience in this sector and therefore no credibility.- Anyone tried EQ-ing their headphones?
My isolating frankenorthos, on which I have no time to spend getting the damping right, sound great with a huge amount of bass boost - way better than anything else that would let me listen in bed while my wife is trying to sleep. I have had pretty good results using an old NAD receiver with bass set to 3 o'clock. I'm currently in the middle of cleaning up a salvaged Yamaha RX-350 stereo receiver, and it has a loudness potentiometer (rather than a switch), which seems like it might sound better than just cranking up the bass on the NAD, though I haven't done any A/B comparisons yet.- Tyll's Beyerdynamic DT 1350 Review
One of the Winnipeg contingent on HF ordered his from Long & McQuade a couple of months ago and they still haven't come in, though he should have them by the time we have our next meet. Now I'm looking forward to hearing them!- A Game of Thrones Pilot Greenlit
I really liked that show. Did the first season follow (ie. skim over, I'm sure) the first book in its entirety, or are we still only part of the way through the first book? In any event, I will be reading the books shortly.- slower forum
Poor guy. I hope he gets his Les Paul back. Spread the word.- Considering building M3 and σ11 to drive speakers
I'm still a diy noob, so maybe you're operating on a higher conceptual level than me (or maybe you're just high?), but won't those speakers be a bit on the, well, quiet side, with a headphone amp driving them? If the answer is no, then have fun with the bom. If the answer is yes, then you will perhaps understand part of the reason for the absurd and hilarious responses so far.- Happy Father's Day!
Happy father's day to all the other dads here! My brother and I made breakfast for our parents, wives, and kids. It was grand. Now I'm kicking back watching a nice thunderstorm roll in on a hot day.- Cheap HDMI to optical converter
There's this one as well: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/1080p-4-port-hdmi-input-to-hdmi-optical-coaxial-audio-output-converter-100-240v-ac-16553 A few bucks more, but free shipping, and it does optical and coax out.- New Rega DAC
Bumping this thread to ask if anyone has heard the old Rega Io DAC. There's one for sale on the 'gon right now, something which doesn't seem to happen too often. I've been curious about it for awhile, though always short on funds when one has come up for sale. It was big bucks when it came out in the late 90s, but is it worth $300 today if one is a Rega fan?- Post the last thing you salvaged
I like this thread idea. My community dump has a separate pile for electronics right next to where you drop off the rest of your trash. Pickings are slim, mainly broken computers, VHS players, and CRT TVs and monitors. Sometimes good stuff appears though. My most recent acquisitions were a Panasonic ghetto blaster from the 80s (my 3 year-old son's introduction to cassette tapes is nigh) and a Yamaha Natural Sound receiver, which needs its pots cleaned but otherwise sounds promising. I used to dumpster dive a fair bit, mostly at Future Shop. Functional cordless mice and keyboards seem to make their way into their garbage frequently, for whatever reason.- slower forum
One of the best movie reviews I've ever read, if not the best.- Acoustic Sounds - Quality Record Pressings video
Very cool. When my kids get a bit older and I have time to make music again, I hope these guys are still around.- Happy birthday MPI!
Have a happy one mpi!- slower forum

My wife now insists that we get Khaaaaan plates too. Thanks for posting all these, Knucks. I bloody love this thread.- Indoor Herb Gardens (random, I know)
I'm with Reks. My mother in-law got something similar to the Aerogarden, and she was good about maintaining it for a couple of months, and then it just went further and further to the back of her mind until the plants died, the whole thing started to smell, and she tossed it in the garage. Pots and dirt are more intuitive with regard to watering and fertilizing, and if you need to supplement the light, full-spectrum grow lights are easy to acquire.- Cool Stuff
This. Check Global Auction Guide for sales and photos in your area. Be prepared to drive out of town. In general, the more remote an auction sale is, the greater likelihood that you'll be able to get a beautiful solid wood antique bedroom or dining room set for two dollars. My wife and I are slowly replacing our Ikea junk with auction sale booty, and it's amazing how cheap it is. Edit: hmmm, can't get the link to work. http://www.globalauctionguide.com/ - fakes
