  1. Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain (1984)
  2. I'm a big fan of _The Flowers of Romance_ for the retarded drum sound.... Peter Gabriel's third might have invented the gated reverb 80s drum thing, but Nick Launay perfected it on that PiL album........and subsequently was hired by Phil Collins to do it again for _Face Value_!
  3. What hippie wouldn't be happy to have a $700 pair of headphones? Not this one! Pic MySpace style for posterity -- extra points for dirty mirror! (though i lose points for not using a camera phone) BTW, the original SR325s are quite clearly the best looking post-MAGNUM'd variant.
  4. eejit approves! edit: woah kaki king is CUTE! eejit wants! Guess I should contribute........ little Pet Sounds spinning here. You all know what it looks like.
  5. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away (2007)
  6. Luther Vandross - Never Too Much (1981) Love Marcus Miller's playing on this album... sounding fucking KILLER on the Magnums, most detail I've heard extracted from this bass performance yet...
  7. Nice Fuck you. Now playing: The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (2003) On CD. Perfect sound forever! Lovin' these Magnum thingers as well. How the fuck did I manage to ignore these guys for so long!!? Thanks to Sarah for having 2001's _Oh, Inverted World_ in her record pile.
  8. Glad to hear I'm not totally insane in my self-restrained desire to gush about these things. I've never been a fan of "fun" bass, preferring something close to ruler flat all the way down to the low B on a 5-string bass guitar, something I've really only felt the SR-X/Pros achieved thus far in my listening career. Still some more break in until the shootout...
  9. Can also report that these seem to have the Stax-style "I turn it up and it just sounds better, not louder..." syndrome...
  10. Yipes! Just freaked out at the dudes talking around 2:45 on track 6 of the Fleet Foxes album... which has never freaked me out before. I'm pretty much in love with these headphones... it's kind of ridiculous... Rhydon, you're an alchemist... granted I haven't had any Stax on my head in weeks, and am just comparing to my RS1s, but this is ridiculous... Waiting for more burn-in until I put them up against the SR-X/Pros... Not sure if the bass is going to open up any more but even if it doesn't, I'm ecstatic with how it is now... really reminds me of the SR-X/Pros... it simply isn't peaky in the lower mid-bass and nice and fast... just put on what I know is a cloudy and nasty sounding remaster of Genesis' _Duke_ and am hearing detail in the bass guitar and kick drum which I've never noticed before... they are pretty hot sounding but it isn't annoying - like the ribbon tweeters on my Maggies......
  11. Oh and I can see the zip ties through the grilles on mine but they're inside the housing, keeping the cable from pulling out... think I would have used black zip ties. Another sneak peek listen occurring currently... I did a lot of back and forth listening between my SR325s and RS1s before sending these off to Rhydon, and took notes to remind myself of the differences. I'm going to do the same again once the MAGNUM'd business is nicely run in. But suffice to say, I already like these more than my RS1s... My SR-X Mk.III/Pros have been The Benchmark since their arrival last year, and I'm looking forward to the inevitable shootout... based on how handily these trounce my RS1s in detail and texture (and no fatigue at stupid volume...), I'm worried for the Stax... I always thought the SR325s and RS1s had a very identifiable Family Sound, despite their differences. The MAGNUMs are definitely a different flavour... this is a big statement, but it kind of feels like all the things I loved about Grados and all the things I loved about Stax, merged... Anxiously awaiting further burn-in...
  12. So, I finally have my MAGNUM'd SR325 in my hot little hands... stock Grado cable has heat shrink exiting the aluminum body... overall they look great... got them burning in but first sneak-peek indicates the bass detail and slam absolutely smokes the stock SR325... which was better than the RS1s by a couple of notches, now it's a slaughter... I'm going to like these things, I think!
  13. Mine are now sitting at the post office as I'm out of town for the week
  14. Father's PSB Passif IIa speakers had grille cloths on them...
  15. I let Rhydon keep my SR325s in their entirety until the whole shebang waw ready. Got a tracking # on the 29th, regular plain jane Canaduh Post... was kind of expecting overnight at this point but hey what's another couple weeks!!?!?
  16. Kinda sounds like a re-hash of the MG-2.7/R but better. The 3 series have always been three way but with a ribbon tweeter for the top end which has long been a coherence issue. Unless I have my MG-IIIas several feet from the back wall, there's no bass....
  17. 600-1000 for me in CDs (and uh, one or two more in "lossless files" living on magnetic storage media in a RAID 1 mirror), another 3000 in my father's collection which I get to rape frequently, and he as another 2k or so of those big black flexible discs everyone's talking about these days which causes me great distress.
  18. As I recall, I had maybe two sips of alcohol all of last night, and I didn't get home until it was bright out... on the bright side I get to remember every detail of a fucking EPIC NYE.
  19. oh it's probably more in the other direction, my collection is quite unlike steve's penis.
  20. Andrew's and Jin's are what springs to mind for me!
  21. The Durutti Column - LC (1981) I have not been able to get enough of this the past few days. Another thanks to 'stretch
  22. How can Wave Editor "sound better" than Peak on the same hardware?
  23. now now, 'reks, Bill wouldn't like you blasting out VLKs...
