The pads themselves aren't the thin spot. The pads don't rest on the baffle, since its recessed, but on the edges of the cups. That's also the point where the pads end and the "skirt" of very thin and flimsy plastic is sewed onto the pads, to go under the baffle. So right there, it's just a thin plastic film sealing to the outside.

I don't think the LCD-1 has sloppy or muddy bass. I find it rather on the dry side. You think it needs more control?

Could a bigger transfomer or a different amplifier than the XCANv3 increase the amount of bass? (When I turn it up really loud, then there is deep bass. I'd like it also with lower volume.)

That's bad. I was hoping to find some other box to try. The high/low switch toggles between 8 ohm and 600 ohm impedance (supposedly, I have not measured it myself). The "low" setting sounds bad with my gear. I have seen no obvious way of opening the small box, so I don't know what else it does / what's inside.

I'd like to try my electret with a different box, but I'm not too familiar with electret transformer boxes. (I'd like to hear whether the box is what limits the bass output.) Is this thre-pin connector common?

I just got the stereo FLAC files of Let it be into my computer. I'll compare them to older mp3 files that hang around inside my box. (not quite fair to either version, but the best that I have.) EDIT: Maybe I should stuff some of the mono FLAC files into my box instead? (still not entirely fair to the recording though)

The LCD-1 headset isn't pretty, but it seems to be made to last. There is no fancy wood or anything, but the grilles appear to be metal, and the rest of the construction seems sturdy as well. (I haven't conducted any destruction test, except for receiving them in a too large post package where the bag could slide back-and-forth inside.). They are quite comfortable too on my head. (And if it would break anyway, then there are (currently) other cheap headphones using the same headset to take spare parts from.)

I hate to reveal my secrets, but secretly I think the LCD-1 sounds fantastic. Cheap headset and all. (and all of it for less than a D2K here) But then I haven't heard that giant YH100 ortho-in-a-grado-frame.

To me, they offered to sell the drivers for the same price as the LCD-1.

Since they sold out I thought maybe perhaps there were also some customers and some (more) of them might possibly stop by here?

... the story so far... It was quite quickly evident that the LCD-1 presents a fine sense of space. Sparkly but not painful highs. Quick snappy bass. Some new impressions... So far, I've not encountered any music with the LCD-1 and thought "hey! there is too much bass!" I'm now playing "Hed Kandi: Twisted Disco" and the bass is, I think, at the limit. No more than this is desirable for me. Still not overdone though. The sense of space is even more immersive as I am getting more used to the LCD-1. But then my comparison is mainly the Grundig orthodynamic that does a fine headstage but not with this sense of space. And also the Sennheiser HD580 that has a boring linear between-the-cups headstage. But enough of my impressions now... some more people must have bought the LCD-1 (than those of us who already posted)?

It looked more like yellow isolation material than foam to me. (if it matters...) Great review there. (but where did all that bass go? it went right out through the pads... )

It's very easy to open the LCD-1. Two screws, and your are done (unless you slip with the screwdriver and crash it into the diver, because then the LCD-1 is done instead). I can verify that the cable is glued just before the point where it is attached to the driver. When it's open, pad swapping is also an easy thing to try out. (but the stock pads are a bit fragile, I slightly damaged a part of mine that goes under the baffle when I swapped back. No harm done to the sound or looks, but probably the pads will not last long if I swap too often. But it makes me want extra replacement pads just in case.)

The old orthos don't look all bad: Some are even designed by famous designers to look great on the head: But I suppose Audeze will present something fancy made of wood if the LCD-1 sells well?
