I, too, liked the HD800s better than the LCD2s. However, I didn't think either sounded as good as the 007, or the HE60. I haven't yet tried the 4070s, although I think there may be a pair sitting on my doorstep right now.

That's some high praise. I might have to give them another shot if you think they are in the Stax league.

I would have thought the brand-name was worth more. There is a lot of goodwill behind it, so even if you just want to run the name into the ground, I think you could use the Stax name to sell a lot of low-end crap (see Marantz) and make a handsome profit. Obviously both sides did their due diligence, so my wild guess is clearly off.

I guess there is some disagreement about the final amount, but it sounds like it is indeed only $1.5M, at least according to the Japanese source cited in the thread over yonder. One of the first posters apparently mistakenly said it was 97.6 million yuan, but the actual amount is 9.76.

$1.5 million? That's not that much. We should have gotten 15 Mafia members to chip in $100,000 each to own a 10% share of Stax. Between Kevin, Justin, Birgir, and Co., they could probably take the company to a new level, wrt to both headphones and amps.

I am trying to wrap my mind around what must go into a solid-state amp to explain a $4250 sticker price. I understand that chassis costs are often one of the largest expenses, but I look at that chassis and it seems many DIY amps on here are more impressive in that regard. It's certainly far short of the RSA A10, looks-wise. Unless there is a few ounces of platinum inside, this seems pretty outrageous. Or am I missing something?

I've never used an energizer, but was wondering if, with good amplification in fronth of them, they would compare to Stax amps like the 717/727. I'm trying to decide which direction to go in with Stax-terminated HE60s. I have a solid speaker amp (Usher R1.5) and would prefer to use that to drive the Woo WEE or the SRD-7 rather than having another amp in the chain, but am I sacrificing something (sound-quality wise) if I do that?

Surprisingly little gushing so far from the people that have received it. I would have expected a more dramatic celebration, even this early in the process. I'm sure as more people receive it, the glorification will become more prevalent, but I am a bit flabbergasted that anybody on head-fi would receive a $2,000 headphone and not proclaim it the greatest thing since sliced R10s.

Yikes is selling the Parasound JC1 monoblocks, and the Usher Be-20 speaker. The JC1s, I assume, are the ones that he received this offer on. The Be-20, by they way, is a terrific speaker at this price. The Be-10 has always been on my short list, assuming I wanted a dynamic, box speaker.

There was a pair of JC1s on Audiogon two weeks ago in mint condition that went for under $3700 (the seller was asking for $3700, not sure what he finally got). And it took a week. So I don't think $3500 is entirely unreasonable.

What law school did you attend? Generally, "willful" is not the same as "voluntary," and indeed implies some intent to defraud. Also, your understanding of fraud is incorrect. Earlier, you said "Can you really commit fraud when the person . . . didn't know . . . he[] was being defrauded?" In fact, that's the very definition of fraud -- an intentional misrepresentation that the other party reasonably relied on. If the person being defrauded knew about the fraud, then his reliance would be unreasonable.

Gotcha -- will do (if I can find one in the U.S., that is). I just wasn't sure if I was missing something obviously horrendous about its design since I'm not a techie.

Well, seems like I've been gone way too long, but I guess nobody missed me either here or on Headfi. Oh well. Anyway . . . looking for a cheap DAC/Headphone amp for my office. I've had plenty of nice ones that I liked (Bryston, Benchmark, etc.) but would like to get decent quality, and a built-in headphone amp. I know in the upper end, there are some good candidates -- Benchmark, Lavry, Grace, Mytek. But what about in the $500 range or below? I researched and researched, and came across the Teac UD-H01. So, at the risk of asking a stupid, headfi-like question, is this thing any good? I mean, I want cheap, but I don't want to crappy. All the buzzwords seem to be there: 192, asynchronous, etc. I've brought a pair of K701s to the office, and am streaming the Naxos Music Library straight from my computer, and it sounds . . . meh. Hoping a DAC/Headphone Amp will take it up a few notches. And if this isn't the holy grail, feel free to tell me what is.

I am no DAxpert (i.e. Monkey) but I'm really looking forward to this more than any other DAC currently on the market. If the built-in headphone amp is at least Grace quality, this will be a great little DAC and even a decent value.

Hey, at this point I'll take opinions. Of course, if somebody has a scientific answer for why it may or may not make a difference, I'd welcome that as well. Regardless, I don't know why I am even asking; I am in love with the Phonitor and don't need another amp. Right?

Looks like the new Luxman is now available from Audiocubes. Audio Cubes II - High Fidelity Audio Products. Of course, this is the Japanese voltage version, but it comes with a 1000W voltage transformer. Putting aside that $2000 is probably a bit of a goofy price to pay for this particular amp, do transformers diminish the sound quality of an amp?

Just curious, have there been any other new rumors about this player that Kevin mentioned a few months ago?

I don't know if there is anybody that has heard both of these amps, but if you have, which one did you like better. And if you haven't but know a lot about tube amp design, which one is better designed / made? I'm looking for the best possible amp for both the K1000 and the HD800 and now that I am leaning towards a tube amp, these two seem to be the leading candidates. Unfortunately, I know nothing about tubes or tube amps. (p.s. let's put aside the fact that Eddie Current is also balanced since (a) it doesn't matter for the K1000 and ( while I may buy a balanced cable for the HD800, I likely won't be reterminating other headphones with hardwired cables.)

I can see at least three things there that I would be unable to do. Maybe more.
