  1. That's exactly how it works with my D-link DGL-4500. It's dual band like the new airport and the 5Ghz range I configured N-only is always full speed, and the mixed B/G/N 2.4Ghz is slower but still generally faster than G when used with N devices.
  2. I've been in Team O2 Mk1 + no amp for far longer than I'd like. It's good the SRD7-Mk2 does a respectable job of driving them.

  4. Microsoft advocate using Flip4Mac for all your OS X wmv needs although you need to pay to get a version with an encoder. I've never used anything more than the free player-only version so can't say how well it works. I've also heard that the command-line ffmpeg tool can do wmv encoding although I've never found it particularly nice to use and I expect the process won't be completely easy. It is a free though. There's a shareware gui front-end built around ffmpeg for the Mac called ffmpegX which you can find here. Otherwise to get the open source command-line only version it would be easiest to use Fink or Macports, but that may be a can of worms you don't want to open. Up to you. Have to ask though. You definitely need wmv? It's not the nicest of containers/codecs.
  5. Good to hear. I'm certainly impressed with the shave I get from it and I agree it is surprisingly gentle.
  6. I just bought one of these Phillips Arcitec RQ 1050 shavers to replace some awful Remington rotary I'd had (Remington being a European grooming products company unrelated to the US gun manufacturer). Got a good discount on it about US$100 below the usual price. Not sure what I think of it so far. It does give a nice close shave, but it doesn't look or feel especially robust. I guess time will tell.
  7. I've still yet to hear Love Songs of the Hanging Gardens myself. It's definitely on my list as I Need You to Hold on While the Sky Is Falling has been one of my favourite albums in recent months.
  8. I'd be most tempted to swap the Gamma Pro drivers into my SR-X mk3s, but I don't like to do that considering they're not only a working headphone, but a vintage one at that. Think I'll pass for the time being. Besides, I still have "plans" for my SR-404 drivers. I'll pass on your questions and see what he comes back with. I expect he'd respond to PMs if he's still getting the email notifications though.

  10. Just heard back from Carl. "I have two non-functioning SRXs, one Gamma Pro with a blown driver, and a new set of SRX/Gamma Pro drivers. I'd consider selling any of the above assuming I was properly compensated." I'm tempted by those Gamma Pro drivers myself actually.
  11. It's more that he used to post on quite a significant number of different forums out there so when I say "cut back" that's the scale we're talking. We have quite a few common interests and I've been amazed on a number of occasions when stumbling on a forum only to find posts by him there. I'll ask him and let you know what he says. Yes he was even posting here for a while. I've prodded him this direction on occasions, but he's resisted so far. We'll inevitably be out for a drink sometime in the future so I might try twisting his arm then.
  12. Carl has heavily cut back on his forum usage. He felt he was spending too much time online. I live about half and hour's drive from his place and we regularly keep in touch. I was around at his place a few weeks back helping him unpack and set up his new 55" TV. His headphone collection did appear to be a little larger than when I last saw it. He had a couple of non-functional ones around although I believe he had plans for them. Not sure.
  13. BD-ROM drives must be getting down there. I picked up a Blu-ray burner some time ago for the equivalent of about US$220 and that's with extra tax and shipping costs factored in. I'd need quite a few terabytes of hard drive space to rip my collection, but then again I'd want to manually post-process/de-interlace all my DVD rips through avisynth/decomb/TDeint if I went that way so it probably isn't going to happen.
  14. I'm quite keen on a Region A Blu-ray player (my PS3 is Region , so importing one of these seems like a good way to go. They're even 230V/50Hz ready. I could live with $499 although at $599 I'd be thinking twice. I just hope the DVD player itself is or can be made region free. My DVD collection is quite a mix of Region 1,2,3 and 4 discs so locked players are a no-go.
  15. It's more than just upscaling quality that's lacking on the PS3 for DVD playback. These results are a little out of date given some features have been added via firmware updates (i.e. upscaling), but the PS3 certainly leaves a lot to be desired as a DVD player. The de-interlacing problems are my biggest gripe with it. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=133#SonyPlayStation%203%20(HDMI) If the OPPO BDP-83 is up with their 981HD on the other hand it could be very promising. Hopefully the new ABT 2010 video processor in there lives up to it's reputation. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=133#Oppo%20DigitalDV-981HD
  16. I wonder what would they call it? Delta? Zeta? Omega 3? Maybe just something like SR-008?
  17. The Oppo would be a much better DVD player than the PS3 I expect. I certainly still prefer my old Faroudja-based Skyworth player over the PS3 for DVD playback.
  18. That's true. I had forgotten about the OGG obsession Slashdot has. There always seems to be a sizable portion of their user base who will apparently never buy any DAP without OGG support.
  19. If the vinyl really is a problem you could always get it and then get someone to try and get a quality digital rip of it. Easier said than done of course, but preferable to missing out on the album entirely I'd say. I did it with mine and it turned out reasonably well, although my turntable leaves a bit to be desired.
  20. Haha, no. I have nothing against marriage, but the bachelor lifestyle has a certain appeal too. Then again I guess if I was being constantly nagged about spending too much on gear maybe those sizzling MP3s wouldn't sound so bad?
  21. Well it is Slashdot after all. I've been lurking Slashdot for over a decade now (without an account no less), and there's plenty of off-the-wall comments like that. Whenever someone there claims it's possible for something to sound better than MP3s they get jumped on because it goes against the house groupthink. Actually seeing someone admit MP3 is not perfect is a surprising step in the right direction for the place I'd say. I'd be amused to see a scientific argument suggesting that the brain filters out MP3 sizzle though.

The color spots look a little like Tetris blocks so I saw it as them spiralling down towards someone's Tetris game far off in the distance. Probably not the intended interpretation, but it worked for me.
  23. Ah, but my sheet music is golf leaf printed on paper made from only the best Agarwood pulp.
  24. My last comment wasn't really meant as an analog good/digital bad statement. Most of my listening is digital. I was just referring more to there being factors beyond frequency and dynamic range that are also quite audible. I don't deny that picking the difference between wave shapes at 20Khz would be very hard for the human ear. The malformed wave shape problem is a flaw I notice with MP3s at lower frequencies (than 20khz), but that's a whole different can of worms.
  25. What does the waveshape look like at 22khz on a CD though? Or even 20Khz? Sine waves, square waves, triangle waves, etc all sound very different even when the frequency is the same. CD has so few samples at higher frequencies that it's can't possibly reproduce the original wave shapes accurately. An analog representation will always beat a digitial representation near it's frequency ceiling.
